  • People may scoff at you when you try to analyze the true merits of this scene. But when it comes time to have a deep exchange with somebody about what really matters in life, your head won't be stuck in the dirt with nothing to say.

  • One of the greatest films of all time. Pure Genius

  • tysvm for uploading this... I should watch this everyday to remind me. xox

  • Always when I feel so horrible..when I feel that I just..act..again like a monster...I just always remember this sentence and I always end up here watching this scene...

  • @ShioonXan beautiful response. :)

  • Oh my goddd. This movie... Represents my life. Rose. The symbol of beauty and love... And theres surely a lot of beauty in a world we tend to destroy every single day.. This movie is one of the greatest movies of all time. Inspired me to have a rose as a tattoo.. I cry every time i see this scene . It can transform me to a small child again

  • Just saw the movie for the 17th time. This scene gives me the chills every time. My god its beautiful.

  • This made me cry. And I never cry, let alone in films.

  • i used to watch this with my ex makes me think of her everytime i hear it

  • This is so beautiful

  • this scene defines the moment of my life, where I realized, there was nothing to be afraid of

  • Beautiful and deep thoughts. Great acting.

  • i think people mock this scene because it's so true, or it's something they haven't had the rapture to experience something like it. i would equate this with something of ego death, you observe something on the physical plane that effects you deeply on some spiritual level, and you undergo a detachment, you realize the way things really are, you learn the power of the present moment and you just be here. if you can capture that moment in some way... you can preserve the sentiment.

  • @turkeysub3000 ok nuts bag... keep trying to get a connection with god by staring at paper bags

  • @asanineartist I think he is talking about the random universe and how lucky you are to even exsist! And that its the helpless feeling that we all get when we can see through the bullshit of life and see it for what it really is. The plastic bag is you or me! You never can tell what will happen and that any moment life could end. Think about it! It has a deeper meaning, random chaos!

  • Similar to my first psychedelic experience. I learned a lot. Remember how precious and immortal the sublime is. Your reality and individual perceived existence is key in the relentless effort of preserving the immortal ideals the fuel humanity. Be proud of what you are.

  • so beautiful in all it's simplicity......so powerful but yet so simple....beautiful :)

  • So much truth in this scene. Hard to watch.

  • I dont often comment on clips that I watch, but this is perfection. Nothing else needed, brings a tear to the eye.

  • how can anyone dislike this?

  • Being raised by a rude Navy SEAL from Vietnam war... I understand. I was in prison for many years in my mind. People would say, "take it easy" "loosen up." I never knew what they were talking about. How? What world are they living in? I can relate to this acting role... but there was no one to say "cut" or to do a scene over. Now I am the producer, and although I am finally living in the real world, my dreams can become a reality. Rather than the world being a nightmare.

  • But seriously, I adore this movie, its score, its beauty.

  • DO YOU EVER FEEL

    LIKE A PLASTIC BAG

    DRIFTIN THROUGH THE WIND

    WANTIN TO START AGAAAIN

  • this has to be one of the most beautiful scenes in cinema history. One that brings tears to your eyes by the sheer beauty of it like the ice sculpture scene in "Edward Scissorhands"

  • im sarah browne for anyone who wants to know because we are connected thru this moment and onward forever.

  • @SarahJEmpire I'm Ian Blyth, for the curious among us. I'd happily share this moment with anyone :)

  • i am crying. i am replaying this clip that i saw many years ago. i look into rickys eyes as he talks about beauty.......and i whisper 'i know what you mean' over and over because i finally do.

  • People always try their best to be 'beautiful'.. What they don't understand is that beauty can be as simple as a piece of trash blowing in the wind.

  • The last thing you would have thought of as the most beautiful thing he has ever filmed would be a simple plastic bag, that's why this scene is great. Fist you think it is silly and a funny joke, but seconds later you realize it

wasn't a joke, it was a metaphor about finding beauty on everything and anything.

  • @chiyto I disagree. I get the intent - to show that there is beauty all around, even in things we thought ugly... but a plastic bag isn't the "last thing you would have thought of". Artists have done this kind of thing for years. Things like torture, war, abuse, grief are maybe the last things I would consider beautiful. That's why this scene will never fully work for me. It takes something pretty benign and makes a point about the whole world. But the world has as much horror in it as beauty.

  • @greyztone I couldn't agree more... Spot on! But it's the individual tormented guy talking here... as a point of view, it works for the movie, but you may not see it as a message to the world, I think...

  • Easily the best scene in the film. Thomas Newman is an absolute genius.

  • i love films like american beauty donnie darko fight club etc dunno why

  • @3thebrudas Because they are deep, meaningful, and extremely well done movies :)

  • @YarblesYarblesYarble yepp i geuss your right

  • im having a hard time undeerstanding what he is saying how that plastic bag is beautiful and what happen to that actor

  • Sometimes when Im afraid I think of the line when he says "this incredibly benevolent force, that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever." and i stop being afraid. It's just so perfect, and beautiful.

  • What he says reminds me of conspiracy theorists "there was this whole life behind things". It's just an idea that tickles your brain, but it holds no real credibility, yet you get sucked into it and deny arguments to the contrary. Conspiracy theorists are that guy.

  • This is one of those movies that gets made because it has to get made, like a baby being born from a love that won't stop.

  • kind of eyetrap

  • i have to cry everytime i watch this scene, this movie. it changes.

  • the moment when i knew this film is going to win the Oscar

  • Not only is this one of the best scenes but every word in the dialog is exactly how I have felt so many times before and continues to this day. <3 AC

  • beautiful, thanks AC!

  • a guy who doesn't understand the meaning behind this scene could never be my boyfriend.

it's not just a plastic bag, well it's that too, but it's more to it than meets the eye.

for the people that doesn't understand this scene, it's about seeing the beauty in the simple things in life, that we normally pass by without giving as much as a second look. for instance, like a plastic bag dancing in the wind. if we could just stop every now and then and take it all in, beauty is all around. <3

  • I think i have seen this scene about 50 times...it's the most beautiful thing i have ever seen

  • i love this movie. the whole thing is so beautifl. this scene is so amazing. who would ever think a plastic bag flying in the wind could be so beautiful? i feel like this movie captures what it's really like to grow up/live in the suburbs

  • Comment removed

  • @glopez124 ummm okay? not sure why you said that. asshole

  • @smashedtiara I thought it's a parody or something.

  • Beautiful

  • this is such a powerful scene, the movie is so amazing.

  • I can feel this,i can realizes how much pain im on, and how can i get rid of it... there is so much beautifull in the world... i cannot take it any more :'(

  • I cant imagine why anyone would rate this down.. I think that this is one or the greatest scenes or all time. Maybe better than "Paranod Park" shower scene.

  • I loved this movie, i don't no why people say it's pretentious. It was great!

  • I relate to this scene 100%!!!

  • This film made me realize how precious life is. How rare the moments where I really feel it in me. Since then I always try to remember and it helps me so much.

  • I've seen this floating "bag" outside my office window at least 3 times the last 2 years. And each and every time... I Re-Member... ;-)

  • Absolutely stunning.

  • I wonder who actually filmed the plastic bag scene....

  • I love this movie! When i first saw this scene it really made me think and cry. Wes Bentley really did a good job in this movie. I love alot of his movies. So glad his sober and healthy :)

  • This makes me cry

  • That was beautiful man =(

  • : )

  • beautiful x

  • It's the most beautiful scene I've ever seen in a movie...Thanks for uploading it!

  • Does anyone know what the music in this scene is called?

  • @LostLolli1 american beauty-plastic bag theme. its in the sex and the cinema album

  • @LostLolli1

"Any other name" by Thomas Newman

  • @BigPictureRecords Didn't they use this in House too?

  • @LostLolli1 Actually this music is called "American Beauty". Its number 8 on the Original Motion Picture Score. The music "Any other name" sounds very similar.

  • love this , thank u 4 sharing...

  • 3 minutes that changed my life

  • One of the most beautiful scenes I've ever witnessed in a film. Deeply spiritual and enlightening.

  • Magical!! Thanks for uploading it..

  • I think the reason this simple scene is so powerful is that it helps people step out of the ego, even for just a moments and forget about all the little me problems that we think we have and it helps you connect with the real you!

You're not just an ego in a bag of skin, everyone is connected... we're all one!!

  • @RyanDotTv there is no word for it

  • I love this video! All time favorite. Whenever I see a plastic bag floating in the air, it makes me think of this scene. I'm so glad there are people in this world that see life this way. It gives me hope.

  • this is the most beautiful scene in the history of the world, the way it's set out is so beautiful

  • this is an excellent monologue!

  • Beautiful

  • It's so simple and goregous. I love it. This is my favourite scene.

  • I find it amazing how something so small and simple can be so captivating and have a deep meaning to it

  • When things are going wrong and I have lost all perspective, I watch this scene. In an instant it gives me chills, makes me happy, and makes me sad all at once. It breaks my heart with Truth, mends it and shapes it into something newer and better and I carry on with my life with a healthier perspective. Words cannot adequately express how thankful I am to those who made this film for a world constantly on the brink of losing itself to things that suck it dry.

  • @emoria626 makes me happy, and makes me sad all at once., exactly what I feel...

  • Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for introducing me to this.

  • Without even one word of dialogue, Thora Birch emits one of the most stunning and captivating streams of acting I've ever seen.

  • Thank you for posting this. One of my all time favorite scenes of one of my all time favorite movies.

  • @BIGDANO I agreed 100%. It's on my top ten. What happened to Wes, anyway? I love how his eyes tear as he is talking, and he hesitates. Both of them were on top of their games in this one, perfect scene. The music, the bag footage, the whole package. I LOVE YOUTUBE!!

  • It's a gift to be here, at this very moment of the never ending timeline.

I feel lucky to live, to see, to feel moments like this.

This movie scene is the quintessence of existence in 3 mins.

And it's so trivially simple, that we don't believe to experience it in our life ...

YET, IT'S ALWAYS AROUND US, WE JUST HAVE TO OPEN OUR EYES!!!

  • Sometimes there is so much beauty in the world, I feel I can't take it.

  • I remember the first time I saw this scene in a empty movie theater. My boyfriend had to actually turn to me and tell me breath. The tears had soaked my shirt. I knew and understood exactly what Rick was talking about in that scene. I just love the way the camera catches the glisten in Jane's eyes as she is following the bag on the screen, and the reaction of Rick as Jane takes his hand. This movie from beginning to end is pure perfection.

  • @ceceliacolleen We all understand it in that moment, but most of us forget it very quickly, unfortunately.

  • i could listen to this all day.

  • Thomas Newman is one of the great film composers of all time. A few other films he scored: The Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, Little Women. Like no other composer, he has the ability to pull you into a scene with spare, simple notes. When the scene is particularly beautiful, like this one, the combination is incredible.

  • Definitely "sometimes there is so much beauty in the world", because there are movies like 'American Beauty'...

  • Thank you for uploading this. I get teary every time i watch it. We watched the dvd the other night and I was transfixed all over again. I love this character. He's amazing.

  • Pure emotion... My eyes tear up every time I watch this... It´s simply... Amazing!

  • It seems that one of the themes of "American Beauty" is the definition of beauty. Beauty on the surface (Angela and the "perfect" life Carolyn wants to lead) and beauty underneath (Rick's films and Jane). This is a true example of beauty underneath. This scene takes my breath away.

  • Thanks for this -- one of the greatest scenes in all of film.

And thanks for doing it right -- as in the complete scene with excellent sound in sync with the picture. (It's really amazing how many people have posted this same scene up very, very poorly.)

    Thanks again...Beautiful.

    And always worth remembering.

  • you ever have one of those days where you wake up and are just depressed...like there isnt a thought on your mind yet your upset basically over nothing.

well come watch this scene after feeling that and tell me you didnt almost come to tears...

  • @TheGhillieCutter Your words echo the reasons why I posted this ;-)

  • @TheGhillieCutter Absolutely. The catharsis brought on from this film is overwhelming.

  • @TheGhillieCutter exactly how i feel. this is one of the most beautiful scenes possible in a moment like that

  • this scene is not for everyone but I can tell you for those intellectually inclined, it makes so much sense. I love it

  • @TheGhillieCutter Makes me comfortable that someone else feels like that sometimes...

  • @TheGhillieCutter Listening to this because I want to kill myself. It reminds me of what I already knew, there is so much beauty in the world. Wish someone would just come take me out and the pain will end. makes me feel like the whole world is pain.

  • @emsavings

In truth....the whole world is beauty.... :)

  • This one scene makes American Beauty what it is....'A timeless classic!'

  • damn it. i have no words to say... so much beauty.

  • He is creating beauty out of the uglinest of his daily life. It´s a way to scape of the darknest and sadnest. How simple it is, but how deep it takes to heart and makes me realize that a simple smile and the smell of the rain can make life so fortunate.

  • The world is full.

  • i agree....it's my favorite scene of any movie.....

  • What's the Name of That Song?

  • @Skeletonka29

"Any other name" by Thomas Newman

  • @Skeletonka29 "any other name" is a little different. this one is specifically on itunes as american beauty plastic bag theme....
