@PENAFIELBOY A-Freakin-Men!!! He totally ruined Jack Ryans character. I mean, I don't think Tom Clancy's actually that good of a novelist, but he's always had strong characters. Harrison Ford was good at playing the mature, family-man version of Jack, while Allec Baldwin was a good fit for the younger, more niave, everyman Jack Ryan, but Ben Afflec just made Jack seem like an immature punk. The director even said in an interview that the movie is not part of the other movies' cannon.
This is the worst and most incompetent conversion of a book to a movie in the history of motion pictures.
All people involved must have worked together to destroy what was a good, realistic, scary and interesting history, into the exact opposite.
It cant merely be chalked up as sheer incompetence and lacking mental faculties with the director, producer and writer. Something more must have been at play to make such a piece of shit.
Only demented imbeciles would believe the movies plot...
Not that bad of a movie, but it doesn't hold a candle to HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, PATRIOT GAMES, or CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. I'd like to see a new Jack Ryan film with Ford playing an older Ryan as president like in the books.
To bad in the real book it was Islamic Extremist that bombed the U.S. In the movie the left wing movie producers changed it to right wing neo fascist extremist
Affleck was soooo awful in this movie. Replace him with a competent actor and make the terrorists be like they were in the book and it would have been good.
To be fair...I would have to say that Liev was a closer portrail of Tom Clancy's description of John Clark-in earlier books such as Debt of Honour....but both actors are good choices....and play John Clark well in their own different styles.
Liev Schreiber's casting as John Clarke was somewhat poles apart from the John Clarke we knew from Rainbow Six or Clear and Present Danger. He carries himself like an english teacher from an opulent boys school or something, rather than a former Navy SEAL turned covert ops agent
They might as well have casted Ashton Kutcher or fucken Owen Wilson into it, because Ben looked nothing more like a typical spoilt brat who happened to to get the role from the back of a corn flakes box... either that, or the producers were experimenting to find a suitable replacement to Harrison Ford whose getting too old to be running around, but should be put in a special guest role in the oval office or something
I agree, TC. They need someone slightly nerdy but cute to play a young Jack Ryan. Ben was too much of a pretty-boy. They just really screwed up all the characters in the movie. Maybe it was an attempt by the CIA to encourage a younger generation to sell their souls to the Agency, so they could shoot (I mean retire) their old horses. Idunno. ;D Anyway, whoever the girl was who played Cathy Ryan just wasn't Ann Archer.
A shame that the directors always cast a horrible actor to play Jack Ryan (alec baldwin, ben faglec). The only semi decent Jack Ryan was Harrison Ford.
Harrison Ford's too soft to play John Clark... Willem Dafoe was ideal, as he portrays an ex Vietnam SEAL/CIA operative..... That sort of role can't be placed onto somebody any younger as it detracts from the original character storyline
@forexrobots212 Baldwin has the right stuff for a high profile govt official as opposed to Ford... who looks a bit scruffy looking and somewhat inept and not as tactful.
What is the debt that all men pay? Death will be the ultimate equaliser of all people, and no I WILL NOT WANT US TO BE EQUALISED BY NUKES. The invention of nuclear weapons is not an excuse to use such a technology to destroy half of the human race. Thus nuclear weapons should not be destroyed now just because they are too lethal, but ANY NATION AND LEADER HAS A RESPONSIBILITY TO DESTROY THE WEAPONS BY FORCE IF THEY SEE THE WEAPONS AS A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER TO THE WORLD.
I have a huge favor!!! The American and Russian President, I need some quotes from their talks to each other and addressing their nations. From this movie...
In the closing speeches towards the end of the movie, I didn't catch what Pres. Fowler (James Cromwell) said. Meanwhile, Russian Pres. Nemerov (Ciarán Hinds) quoted an excerpt of JFK's commencement address at American University in Washington (June 10, 1963) in his speech:
"...our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."
Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war, but i hardly feel that killing innocent lives is necessary. As harsh as it sounds, there are casualties during war, but to aim towards wiping out civilisations. Truman wanted to continue bombing, and he is by far in my book, the most immoral man alive, not far behind Hitler and Stalin, but at least they aimed for something other than just pointless destruction
Wouldn't you agree though, that the President's job is to put American lives first? And if that means that save potentially tens of thousands of American soldiers and even many Japanese Civillians, that nuclear weapons had to be used, wouldn't you agree that it is the presidents moral responsibility to uphold his oath and carry out his duty? It doesn't matter whether you think it was right or wrong. I don't like it myself. It is the presidents duty to do what needs to be done to save US lives
I would NEVER agree that a President's job would be to allow a bomb to kill so many INNOCENT lives. President always comes behind being a Human Being. To be honest wuld u hav said the same thing if Japan had done it to the US, because I know I wuld be defending the victims. Dont get me wrong Im not attack America Im attacking the decision to create such a thing! Russia has them, a lot of nations do and I hav no repsect for any tht still keeps them safely locked up
Of course I would not like it if Japan had bombed the US. The truth is, the President has to make the decision of which he thinks would be worse. Do you think invading Japan would have worked considering we bombed an entire city and the Japanese government didn't care? We have to keep our nuclear weapons and we will never be able to get rid of any of them until we build a reliable misssile shield. Nuclear weapons are the only thing stopping a nuclear war.
Of course, because tearing apart civilians using tanks (Chechnya), bombing civilians (Georgia) and sodomizing your own troops in hazing rituals(Russian military) is for the greater good of Humanity.
At the end of the day every nation has its dark points, Im just sayin that a lot of people forget that. Russia right now is doing something I would call disgusting, they called a ceasefire but I still hear death. But the US still droped a bomb and changed the world forever (especially for the nest 40 years)
Although it's easy to see why u said tht, it's not actually the reason they changed it. The movie was shot and finished BEFORE the attacks. It was finished in June 2001, 3 months before the attacks. The reasons why they changed itfrom the book was because Muslim extremists would not be able to carry off what actually hapened in the film. That and the fact people were getting tired of muslim villains. Really good movie though
This movie is so smart, it shows u the intricate nature of politics "dangerous". Also that; a nuke war btw USA and Russia will end in a suicide aka no winner!
i just notice it like that south park ep "it the russians that planted the nuke no the russians are working for terrorist no the russians are" but some how its the british because they were our first enmeys
nope, its a real flying plane.. 747 i believe. My dad is an artist and they hired him to do the work.. strip, paint prep and paint. it was awesome to see it all done and watch it on t.v
Technical Overlook: Typically electronics are knocked out in close proximity to a above ground nuclear blast by EMP and radiowaves are very limited. So his helicopter radio would probably not work. A detonation a few hundred miles above earth would magnify that by 1,000 times over 100,000 times the area. See Operation Star Fish.

I liked this movie, but I think it would've got it's five stars if it had Sean Connery.
