Notice the castle on the hill in the background? That happens to look an awful like the one in Darby 'O Gill & the Little People, doesn't it. At least the same set or whatever.
@silverbulletgirl29 Actually this Castle in this film was genuine, It's Corfe Castle in Dorset. I'm not sure about the one in Darby, I believe that it was a set
my dad served with the home guard, the first job was to deal with the paratroopers that they expected would land first leaving the regular army to deal with the invasion force, its hard to drop into an enermy country if the civilians as well as the army are out to kill you
@formerfreak Of course, we still had the regular army, and Britain was heavily reliant upon the Royal Navy and the RAF for defence, but we are incredibly proud of this bit of our history.
Remember that it was the Battle of Britain that preserved democracy for the world.
@BasilFawlty4444 two things, one already knew that was just saying something semi-stupid for a few cheap laughs. Two I just enjoy the idea of a small batallion of old men whoppin some guys ass who is way younger, ever see Second hand lions? there ya go...least i think it was second hand lions
I love every single one of those old men. When I was little, one in particular always reminded me of my grandfather. He's since passed but this still males me think of him :)
Man, you've got to feel sorry for the poor bastard armed with the shovel. What would he have done if the Nazi's had invaded; sneak in front of a tank and dig a pit trap while the driver isn't looking?
@PsycoBhoy Actually I think his job would be to dig the trenches and/or bury the dead. But he would get a awful lot of man points if he managed to do what you suggested!
@blackskullthunder Not as stupid as it sounds if you prepared it in advance. Though if its only one man, if he managed one big enough to swamp a Panzer IV the man points would be insane.
Bit of history for you: many countries had a Home Guard. Churchill asked volunteers in 1940 hoping for around 500,000 (May) He got 150,000 and by June 1,500,000!!! First known as the LDV- Local Defence Volunteers. Usually aged between 17 and 65 but boys young as 14 got in AND even the elderly ELDERLY snuck him- 80 year olds lied of their age (GO THEM!) Because of this it is said this is where the nick-name 'Dad's Army' came from. :)
@LoreneFaith No problem- Bedknobs and Broomsticks is my fav live action Disney Film and WW1 and WW2 are my top fav history. Did you see channel 4's programme of the bombs used in WW2 tested out of their own version of Blitz Street- the only thing to survive each test was a milk bottle!!! XD
@HeartOfPureDarkness hello back again with more history about the home guard: although a wonderful film it is rather misleading; members of the home guard did not possess guns (they were used for the men fighting the war in the trenches! (or known as the 'regular army') so had to make do with ancient weapons are whatever was around including: glof club, pikes, cutlass and even a kitche knife taped to a wooden pole! I say its a ruddy good job the Germans did not manage to invade Britain!
For a long time I wondered: why are these soldiers aged men, and not young boys? Then at once the answer struck me: these men were the young boys that fought in World War One, about 25 years before! Of course!
@DellDuckfan313 Bit of history lesson for you. The Home Guard was comprised of volunteers and former soldiers. Basically those that were able bodied were allowed in the Home Guard.
@DellDuckfan313 Basically Britain suffered a lot losses and needed to regroup and rearm more units. The Home Guard was formed to defend their country until the regular military forces were back sufficient enough strength.
@LoreneFaith That said, I would opt to get the intended cut of the film, and not the extended film, which in my opinion has a lot of pointless parts that take away from the film.
@Andrewwascool I also think there are some bits that add to it though. I always wondered why the kids said about staying with Miss Price, where in the Extended cut they mention about their Aunt they were living with being killed in the bombings. Granted some bits felt pointless, but there were some extra scenes in there that felt like they fleshed out the characters a bit.
well isn't britain worth fighting for the finest country this planet will ever know. and the only reason they got a grudge against this country is they've wreck they own
Can not believe that I still know the words to this entire song. This song makes me so proud to be a member of Defence, protecting my country!! Thank you to the Old Home Guard!!
I remember watching this film when i was like 5 and I always used to march around the house in my grandads WW2 beret singing this song. I forgot all about it until i was at work today and the song just popped up from nowere in my head. I had to listen to it again for the happy memorys so as soon as i finished work i went straight home and straight on youtube and here i am. The soldiers of the old home guard THATS WHO! The soldiers of the old home guard... EPIC!
There is a missing set of lines from this song. Here they are: They're sailing for England... Oh! What a shame, Someone is after our island again. Will we let them have it? Oh, yes we will! But I don't think they'll want it once they get the bill, For we wrote the story of the old brigades! We know the glory of yesterday's parades! We're celebrating, yard by yard, The Soldiers of the Old Home Guard! We will! The Soldiers of the Old Home Guard!
@Admiral8Q There is no music link where I found these verses... only the written words themselves. Frankly, I don't know if an extended recording of this song exists!

Just a bit of clarification- the British Home Guard was a volunteer organization for people who weren't eligible for regular military service. They were intended as observers and a secondary line of defence in case of invasion.
Because the most common reason for disqualification was age, it was nicknamed Dad's Army.

"That's who!" is a very British turn of phrase. It turns up in more than a few of their movies... "Sink the Bismarck" being one:
SAILOR ONE: A solid foot of armor plating... that's what the BISMARCK's got.
SAILOR TWO: Who said so?
SAILOR ONE: The gunnery officer, that's who. He said for all the good our guns would do, we might as well throw crumpets at her.
SAILOR TWO: I wish someone would throw a crumpet at me.
