Ask the old generation "we played like NA players = we played rough... russians weren't ready for this". In Russia, they will say "they played rough, because they were not as skilled as us to play clean". It just 2 point of views with 2 completely different ways to plays hockey. I prefer clean hockey and skills, but that's me.

Moose Dupant told this man,if we had been treated like that (1976), we would have left the ice also. He (Moose) said, just before the had started, the Ref. poked his head in the dressing room & said; "Don't forget boys, I'm Canadian too"! In other words, "Do what you have to do, & I won't see a thing....unless they retalliate, then they get the gate,..GO POUND 'EM BOYS!
this game to me almost embodies the stereotypes that exists in professional hockey. In the past, Canadian players were always skilled and rough, although rough play and fighting had been in the game since the league started. While we've seen some examples of rough hockey players from Europe, most Euro hockey is a lot more skill-oriented and graceful, not a lot of rough stuff becuz i think they really restrict that kind of play.
The Habs and Big Bird Robinson gave this cocky dirty team a big lesson in humility the following Spring. They never were the same after. That is why the Bruins beat them in the Stanley Cup playoffs 2 years in a row after that in 1977 and 1978.
The Flyers did not have to play this dirty to beat the Russians. They still would have beat the Russians without this dirty crap by them. Although the final game score win by the Flyers would be closer.

USSR and NHL teams had a shitload of these exhibition games with varying results.

They're game was built around speed, endurance, and vision on the ice. You tear down all three of those attributes by playing physical. The fact of the matter is the Flyers style of play was the achiles heal of the Russians, and 11 minutes into the game they knew it. BTW checking from behind wasn't a penalty yet.

The only thing illegal in this whole video was the love push 30 seconds in. The Russians agreed to play by NHL rules when they came. @pajmf Because Canada started the intimidation. The 1972 series, Russian won the first game, So CAnada team knew they had to play rough at this point. Ask the old generation "we played like NA players = we played rough... russians weren't ready for this". In Russia, they will say "they played rough, because they were not as skilled as us to play clean". It just 2 point of views with 2 completely different ways to plays hockey. I prefer clean hockey and skills, but that's me.

Just attended my 10 yr. old grandsons tournament in PEI. Met a gentleman who said he attended a party of NHL Hockey Players. Moose Dupant told this man,if we had been treated like that (1976), we would have left the ice also. He (Moose) said, just before the had started, the Ref. poked his head in the dressing room & said; "Don't forget boys, I'm Canadian too"! In other words, "Do what you have to do, & I won't see a thing....unless they retalliate, then they get the gate,..GO POUND 'EM BOYS!

this game to me almost embodies the stereotypes that exists in professional hockey. In the past, Canadian players were always skilled and rough, although rough play and fighting had been in the game since the league started. While we've seen some examples of rough hockey players from Europe, most Euro hockey is a lot more skill-oriented and graceful, not a lot of rough stuff becuz i think they really restrict that kind of play.

You can't have a team allowed to punch, elbow, trip, charge, etc., yet get no penalties & expect a team 2 win that's penalized for falling to the ice, on the receiving end of those infractions,
Back then the Russians were head & shoulders above them all. Clarke had to break K's ankle in order to squeak out a win in "72" which Can was expected 2 win all 8 X shut-outs!

Mario Lemieux took a hit or two worse than that PER game in most of his younger years, and out-right refused to have 'protection' (a pugilist). But he got up like a man after each hit. Kharlamov is the prototypical Russian skilled player: nice skills, no balls.

@Mineav Mario was 6'6, and secondly, Mario could of made more pts with less stupidity and violence in NHL. He got his back injured. Russians were playing real hockey = clean and pure skills. The yanks transformed hockey.. it used to be clean, but the 70's transformed this sport. Obviously, the Flyers were lacking skills compared to the russians... so they tried to intimidate them. Good thing Russians left the ice and sent a message.

It was an exhibition game, and the Flyers were a professional team that practiced together just like, essentially, the Soviets were. Compare that to a briefly assembled group of college kids from AMERICA, which was way behind Canada, USSR, and others in hockey at the time. Saying the two are similar is a joke. USSR and NHL teams had a shitload of these exhibition games with varying results.

If you know your NHL history a little better the Canucks were accually like this too but usually to Toronto and Edmonton back in the late 70's but this is old school hockey, the Flyers weren't just doing it other teams are as well. I know the NHL's deal with NBC expired at the end of the previous year's playoffs, but I thought that two Sunday afternoon games of the January, 1976 exhibition series between NHL clubs and the Russians were on CBS.

Our players stayed in Moscow in 1972 when we got crappy refereeing and officiating.. Our WHA players stayed in 1974 when we got crappy refereeing and officiating. Our NHL players stayed in the Challenge Cup in 1979. We did not leave the game like sorehead losers when we got beaten. We didn't leave the game like sucks and soreheads like the Russians.

The main enforcer on the Broad Street Bullies, Dave Schultz, was also Canadian. As were other key players Reggie Leach and Rick Macleish, and star goalie Bernie Parent. So yeh, sort of cancels out your tired "Americans are dumb primates" premise.

We are the reason you are watching this. We are the reason hockey is so big today, because of our passion for the sport. We are steryotyped hockey players alot. @hanksnow2 They're better skilled yet they lost the game 4-1? Truth was Russians built their style of play around international competitions which is less physical. They're game was built around speed, endurance, and vision on the ice. You tear down all three of those attributes by playing physical. The fact of the matter is the Flyers style of play was the achiles heal of the Russians, and 11 minutes into the game they knew it. BTW checking from behind wasn't a penalty yet.

@hanksnow2 The rules have changed in 35 years. In the 70's it was legal to check from behind, legal to check as long as the puck was in the vicinity of a player. The only thing illegal in this whole video was the love push 30 seconds in. The Russians agreed to play by NHL rules when they came. BTW this is the Russian team that tied Montreal, you really surprised they lost to the two time stanley cup winners? They were the underdog going into the game.
