No horse was hurt or killed in that movie, the horses are trained to react that way after the have been "shot" believe me, my father was one of those soldiers in the movie. Back then he was in the army as well as all the soldiers participating in that movie.
@mrmarmalademan Don't worry, the horses aren't "breaking their necks and backs for real". Even today Bulgaria has some of the best stuntsmen (unlike most of our actors, unfortunately) and back in those days when we were still making good movies, they were even better.
And, yes, a horse can be brought down by an arrow, that's documented in many medieval sources. Also, many of the horses falling here do so not from arrows (though some indeed do), but from falling in hidden wolfpits.
Indeed. In the 8th video ("Dirty Fighting") the Slavic warriors are the main combatants and are even historically accurate (or at least as they're described by the Strategikon of Maurice). The movie shows the popular version that Asparuh's Bulgars allied themselves with the local Slavs and fought the Byzantines together, although that's actually incorrect (at least for this battle).
There is a DVD (3 DVDs actually, because the movie's more of a trilogy) and that's what I used to make this clip. However, I don't think they're sold outside of Bulgaria and they don't have English translations (I made these "subs" myself).
There's a Warner Brothers version called "681 - Glory of the Khan" which is English-dubbed with Bulgarian subtitles, but is also only one movie and very much cut down (compared to the original 3).
Actually that's some real tough stunt work, But as you may notice in a few secs the horses get up almost immediately after the rider is out of the saddle. Of course its way harder than most Hollywood stuff.
ok, im english, and im a bit confused. are you saying you bulgarians believe you are descended from turks or huns? just not quite sure which side is being celebrated here thats all?
The Bulgars (one of the main component of the Bulgarians (i.e. the Bulgarians appeared from the mix of Bulgars and Slavs and possibly Thracians)) were a steppe tribe, most probably a mix itself of Turkic and Iranic tribes. The modern Bulgarians, however, just like most nations today, are descendants of many more peoples.
None. That's a fact! These were no ordinary horses. They were trained for stunds like these to ensure no one gets hurt. As a matter of fact the specialists who coordinated the stunts in this movie also worked on "Braveheart" and the same technickes were used there despite that more than 10 years had passed from the time the Bulgarian movie was shot ;)
Голяма работа сме комунистите, страхотен филм! Браво! Браво на Людмила Живкова за всичко това!

You guys really know your history.
The problem I've got with the action is the horses being tripped up. Similar to old black and white cowboy and indian films.
Can a horse actually be brought down by an arrow. Doubtful.
So why did the film makers feel the need to trip over all those horses when clearly they are breaking their necks and backs for real.
Thumbs up for the cavalry archers. But why spin round and face backwards. Surely it's easier to turn 180 degrees and fire.

@NikeBG Thanks for the reply.
Hope I wasn't being too critical because I forgot to say thank you for posting a wonderful film. I really enjoyed it. Especially the cinematography.

The production value of this movie is amazing! I feel sorry for the horses though, specially when they fell and twitching(in pain?) on their backs.
