i always thought Bashir was the best of the Trek doctors, and the one who was most realistic as a doctor. The show really explored Bashir's concept of being a doctor and his beliefs concerning what constitutes a good quality of life, and also his feelings on the end of life. A most amazing performance by Alexander Siddig.

Basically in Next Gen they were trying pretty hard to distance themselves from some of the more campy aspects of the original series. That's why compared to DS9, Voyager, and especially Enterprise, there are far fewer references to TOS in Next Gen.

@mrtrin you know, i always wondered why gates mcfadden temporarily left the show for season 2 and was replaced with diana muldaur as dr pulaski for season 2. did it have something to do with the 1988 writers guild of america strike which was happening at the same time? she wasnt a writer so i dont see how that would affect her but thats the only explanation that i can think of. i tried searching google for theories on the reason why she wasnt in season 2 but i couldnt find any.
as for wesley, i liked his character and dont understand why so many people hate on him. it was fascinating to see how he grew up on a starship. during the show's initial run, i was about the same same age as him so i guess i felt like i could relate to him growing up on a starship since we were in the same age group. it was a shame that he left the show as a regular character so early, however, he did return as a guest star for a few more episodes throughout the course of the series.
Wesley was a writer's proxy, they lacked the balance of "shut the fuck up kid" and jr. space cadet... so it was always shut the fuck up kid. I wished they showed more of his animosity towards Picard, which should've been similar to Sisko and Picard... but I liked when he came back as an arrogant bastard... didn't like when they game him the Q powers without being a Q.
@mrtrin I didn't like it when they changed him w/that Traveler either. They couldn't just leave him an ordinary kid that worked hard at an interest to excel? They had make him a super hero w/extraordinary abilities! Awful! I liked episodes like "The Game" and some of the academy stuff. The character started good. Not the best, but good.

@thebuckrogers22 i think the reason why people vote for bones the most is because unlike the doctor (who comes in as a close second for me) like you mentioned, he was programmed to be a doctor and he had it a lot easier because he was basically a computer and could learn things a lot easier whereas bones was just a plain old human that wasnt genetically enhanced (i.e. bashir) and had to deal with troubles with older technology than most others. phlox would probably be higher than crusher for me.
They left out my favorite with the Horta. I believe it was, "I'm a doctor not a brick layer."

@KimCheeWarrior Not that bad when you consider you never see a sneeze or sniffle out of the crew. Today we got better than plain asprin. We have all kinds of specific symptoms managed w/meds. Leonard McCoy is in the lead with 44%, The Doctor 31%, Beverly Crusher 11%, Julian Bashir 8%, and Phlox 5%. my fav always been crusher cuz that was the 1st star trek show i see. i can see why mccoy is at the lead cuz he is the main man when it comes to being a doctor. the EMH doctor, honestly he is extremely good but only cuz he is programmed to be and he has learned along the way. but crusher had to be taught and was great

@thebuckrogers22 i think the reason why people vote for bones the most is because unlike the doctor (who comes in as a close second for me) like you mentioned, he was programmed to be a doctor and he had it a lot easier because he was basically a computer and could learn things a lot easier whereas bones was just a plain old human that wasnt genetically enhanced (i.e. bashir) and had to deal with troubles with older technology than most others. phlox would probably be higher than crusher for me.

@KimCheeWarrior Not that bad when you consider you never see a sneeze or sniffle out of the crew. Today we got better than plain asprin. We have all kinds of specific symptoms managed w/meds. Maybe he just does a hypo spray every four hours and they're set. That wouldn't be so bad. LOL Cure and Treat are two different things. Nobody ever calls in sick either. @KimCheeWarrior What I find unsettling is Synthahol in the future. People are so stuck on the idea of drinking they made a substitute. Either drink liqour or don't! Do future people have so little self control that they need a fake liquor rather than moderation. And it's only the earth people!!!!! Klingons, Romulans, Sorians, and several others have liquor. Humans drink it but it's never from earth. Humans are uncontrolled lushes that need liquor taken off the planet!!!! That's just sad!!!!! LOL
