Me and my fiance are currently looking for someone to paint the bird on the hood of our 1980 trans, it has a vinyl decal but it just doesn't do this beautiful example of american engineering any justice.
I had the 78 , Awesome car. real great handling car . No guts though. Bought a 68 Charger w a 440 535 hp . Thats a muscle car with no maners at all . Sometimes I miss the T A .. You could drive it in absolute comfort across the country . 77 and 78 were the coolest looking birds I think .
I own a 1977 trans am myself.....the torque is great 325lbft. These cars are choked and it takes hardly anything to make some serious power out of them.
Compared to a pre-oil crisis Trans Am, do these Trans Ams really have a lack of torque? I know they're not the fastest V8s around, but I just can't imagine a 6.6L 200Hp is that bad. :/ Anybody with experiences? I want a '77-78 with a Pontiac 400 so bad...
love this car nothing other car. my biggest dream was buying on of'm and still driving the original "smokey raceway" to texas and back to atlanta with my brother with some coors in the back of the this fuckin' great car. lovely regards from germany, michael.
i dont claim to know everything about these 1977 pontiacs but i know enough to where i get pissed off about certain posts , first off the 400 pontiac motor is not a big block , nor is the 403 oldsmobile motor, both are small blocks, in 1976 the 7.5 liter 455 cid was laid to rest , the gas crisis was on and power and size disappeared fast , its a shame but the transam did maintain its handling abilities well into the 80's
@beers2257 you still don't know enough. other than being a physically large engine, a pontiac 400 is considered neither a big block or a small block as all pontiacs were physically the same (except the 301)
@omaifakingad She has a 6.6L which was a big block 400 cid with a 4 Barrel carb. NIce Sunday drive like a human being, lol she'd give you a good 26 MPG and if you play with the 4 barrels you can watch your gas gauge go down. I know this cause I used to own a very same.
I've been saving for a Firebird for about 3 years, but with prices going from anywhere between £3000(too cheap!) and £30000(too expensive!!!!) Its hard to find one at the right price.
now that, that's an amazing car I had a question is it normal for cars of this age to be able to slide they key out of the ignition and still be able to drive the car?
love the car would love to own it but if your gunna do a tribute to this amazing car dont put that crappy song on play east bound and down! thats like the theme song to this car
i got a 4 row radiator and a different thermostat car was running hot with the bigger motor.
the high beams look stupid with the hid lights so i ordered the headlight housings for the high beams but will just run with the hid bulbs, not gas charged bulbs for the high beams. not much more to go now.
@ricky80ss You're right, I was wrong. My dad worked for PMD when these cars were made and was a big fan of them but am not an expert and I should have done more homework before posting, instead I relied on my 42yr old memory. I accidentally confused the 1978 Gold Edition which has the gold PMD emblem on the nose with the 1977 S/E Bandit Edition. Weren't the center cap Firebird emblems supposed to be gold instead of red though?

ohh...they usually have uneven wear due to sanders or heat damage and they have waves throughout the edges. i would say 8 out of 10 have that even if the paint is really good...yours is the most perfect i've seen in a while. is it aftermarket from a fabricator? i used classic industries for a 2nd gen camaro i had and even those sometimes will line up strange on the side bottom fenders.
Hi, I will give you some thoughts: a professional restoration will take around 500 hours to do a whole car, average cost of hourly restoration varies depending location (range is $60 to $150 per hour) , do the math labor + parts, this said assuming you have the skills to restore the car correctly unless you do in your backyard and consider your time as a free expense then you can possibly do it under $20k, other way I dont see a frame off resto possible under $20k.
original 1977 snowflake rims 15 x 7 " with 225/70 R15 tires, also factory size. That's the way the car came from factory in 1977, they are not aftermarket.
For some info. If anyone is looking for a 77-79 Trans-Am there were 2 different engines offered. A 403 Olds and a 400 Pontiac. The 400 is the best motor and the most powerful of the 2. Look for the letter Z in the 5th digit of the VIN number.
thats a realy nice bird... i just picked up a 77 few months ago... nice paint and inteiror but its silver with black inteiror ... i dunno if i should spend the money to make it a bandit, or leave it be and just drive it
@castrewq i really hope that when the economy stabilizes and GM gets back on there feet they revive Pontiac and the Trans AM / GTO, theres a reason they havent sold pontiac yet im hoping its cause they plan to bring it back :)
@R1derlin Yeah, i'd consider it to be the last great american car. I don't get why gm cut pontiac in the 1st place; it was definitely their best brand.
#2 I've followed Formula 1 for years rooting FOR Ferrari, so I am very familiar with what Euro autos can do.

I'm looking at buying one now... very few around my area (if any) but I like the 1979 one... no crazy about the german style lettering and I like the head lights for the 79...
you are 100% right, is not a real SE, and you know is not because we stated it, otherwise you would not know, thats why is caled tribute, same as any SE but much less money.
sorry to tell you you are WRONG , in 77 the SE came with red emblems on the exterior, is a missconception , gold arrow head emblem on the nose and wheel caps started in 1978 and up NOT 77, so if you had an SE in 1977 they all came with red emblem on the exterior, read the books and check original brochires and you will realize that.
dear god, the car I will forever want but can never afford to own, oh the humanity !!!!! I would scale a building for that thing, and im not kidding!!!!!
could cry everytime I see that car, my grandpa owned one for years until my idiot cousin got ahold of it and wrecked it. he was going to give it to me when he passed away too and it broke my heart to see it wrecked, such a beautiful car
I want this car so bad, my total absolute dream car -3 hopefully one day I'll have one

you are 100% right, is not a real SE, and you know is not because we stated it, otherwise you would not know, thats why is caled tribute, same as any SE but much less money.

Yes I would know. The Pontiac Emblem on the front is gold, not red
smfcpthowdy 2 years ago
sorry to tell you you are WRONG , in 77 the SE came with red emblems on the exterior, is a missconception , gold arrow head emblem on the nose and wheel caps started in 1978 and up NOT 77, so if you had an SE in 1977 they all came with red emblem on the exterior, read the books and check original brochires and you will realize that.

could cry everytime I see that car, my grandpa owned one for years until my idiot cousin got ahold of it and wrecked it. he was going to give it to me when he passed away too and it broke my heart to see it wrecked, such a beautiful car

No I mean Cats Eyes. It doesn't really matter. I see where you're coming from, I would have never thought of a Hawk though. :)
I just Grew up hearing the headlights reffered to as Cats Eyes.
