You first problem is your looking at it the wrong way. You dont need to start a conversation, they will ether come to you, if you look willing, or will give you signals that they want you to come to them. Now, if talking to strangers is a problem then dont talk to women first. Try practicing with men, its easier because less at stake. If you really want to pick up girls, I recommend that you read both of the following guides:

GENERAL GUIDELINES
1) Be Confident (Posture, Eye Contact, Speak With Authority etc).
2) Act like you don't need them and make them prove themselves to YOU!
3) Make them feel comfortable (comfort comes before intimacy)
4) Demonstrate that you're a good provider & protector (easy ways to do this).

I used to follow this kind of advice. Women rejected me like I was a drooling, rabid weasel. Then they went back to reading their books or sipping their coffee. I went back to my apartment and cried in the corner with a tub of peanut butter.
Now I just walk up to women and insult them. The more cutting and ruthless I am, the more they seem to like me.

@AVIATIO I haven't had much experience meeting them at bookstores, but my thinking is that you could see what kinds of books she's looking at and comment on it like "Oh so you're into . . .". That creates a big advantage already knowing something about what she's interested in.

You first problem is your looking at it the wrong way. You dont need to start a conversation, they will ether come to you, if you look willing, or will give you signals that they want you to come to them. Now, if talking to strangers is a problem then dont talk to women first. Try practicing with men, its easier because less at stake. If you can make friends with strange men, you can talk to any girl, easily. I am a surfer and that makes things a hell lot easier for me, you can try that.

first of all, the best way to meet some one is by social circle (friends you know and people they know and people you meet through them). second of all, I don't know about you but its pretty fucken deamingning and weird going to such and such place every such and such day JUST to hit on some one. that is simply not necessary and completely weird. and third and probably most importantly, most people that give you this kind of advise (the "go and talk to at least ten random people" advise) didn't
