Smashing Pumpkins didnt want to be part of the Grunge scene, Heard an interview with Billy about a month ago he said that the pumpkins were more of a sophisticated form of rock than Nirvana, they were like Soundgarden but basically more intellectual than the grunge/punk scene of the 90's, oh btw, they are touring in 2012 :D
