I'm not doubting Morphy's talent but there is no way you would get 3...g5 from even a 1200 player on the net today completely opening up his king side with no development whatsoever.
In 3:54, why not black pawn to d6 followed by knight coming to e7 later ? Though the white rook is crashing anyway, isn't this a bettter continuation for black at the time ?
Great symphony!!!!! but I think he could make it because his opponent cooperated with him very nicely like a good boy, otherwise he couldnt have won the game so nicely. I cant believe it was a real game, especially I 'm very suspicious that why the opponent did'n play knight f6 early in the game to threaten the queen!!1
what an awesome game. u voice makes me fell asleep but the game is so pretty. but damn stop talking those drugs. ok if i by magic trick would get a life, iwould study all about morphy vukovic and fischer..... i
at 5:33 you say if pawn captures knight, Qe6 is checkmate. this is not true, the king would have d4 has his flight square. the best move for white after black pawn captures knight is white queen captures queen.
@linktruman23 That's kind of why I wasn't too impressed with this game. It's clear that he's playing an amateur, so even though it was a beautiful game, there really wasn't any good opposition from his opponent.
@CommunityCam he was playing againt Rosseau who was considerate the second best player of the USA a the time, Paul Morphy was born when most of the chess theory was being developed and if they looked like amateurs was because he made them look like that.
@lbqt123np I'm not questioning Morphy's natural genius, I'm simply saying that this is a simple trap (not at the time, but really, if someone fell for it, I'm not surprised Morphy won), and that there wasn't anything too special about this match. However, I admire Morphy's romantic style in his games, and he is my favorite player in terms of interesting games.
Black missed 11. Nf6. putting him +4 up on my engine. If white goes 12 Re1 then Black can just take rook and get check, then take queen. Many of Morphys lines not sound. Maybe he knew he was playing v crap players lol
@cruiseylee +4 on your engine? Does that mean that after Nf6, Black has a better chance at winning the game? It seems that Morphy's opponent was intimidated and didn't see the move although any decent player would have seen it, which would get the knight out of harm's way before moving the queen or king out of the way of Re1.
Yes plus 4 is a win at master/Gm level. But a great player is not always playing the best moves. Its knowing what your opponent may fall for and what will work better. Morphy was one of the best for this.
@cruiseylee Thanks for the explanation. I guess you are saying chess is a psychological game like poker and we can predict what kind of moves our opponent will make. But I think it takes guts to make unsound moves hoping our opponent will not see a good move to get to checkmate sooner. This is how Morphy gets his 17 move checkmates I guess. This guy was the opposite of Petrosian although I think Fischer would want to take apart Morphy's "unsound" moves in a real match.
Yes it is and its very risky, but if you know you are playing a lesser opponent then its pure class to play a less of a better move v that person. If it backfires you try and make sure it wasnt so bad that u cant make a come back from, ;)
@cruiseylee What you said reminds me of the two different ways of thinking that influenced the boy (Josh) in the film "Searching for Bobby Fischer". Laurence Fishburne's character kept telling him to play the player and not the game. To Josh's teacher (Ben Kingsley), this would be wrong because he taught him to always play for the best position. However, as this game demonstrates, a dynamic player considers both kinds of tactics depending on who we are playing and the circumstances.
Yes, ;) Sometimes the most succesful player is not the best one but the one who can assess who hes playing each time and play the player rather than the game, ;)
@sammyr98 Rousseau's second in the match was Ernest Morphy, who took his eight-year-old nephew Paul Morphy along and allowed him to be present for the contests. Later, Paul was allowed to play Rousseau, and it became clear that Paul was a better player, despite his young age.
During this time, the opponent he beated was the U.S.'s second best chess player and by defeating him with just 17 moves his name spread throughout europe. In this video when the knight took pawn on d5, either pawn takes will result in capturing queen or the bishop will take the queen if captured. Truely an amazing game! check our Jessicafischerqueen, she has several videos about the greatest chess players of the age.
Thanks, yeah incredible dangerous stuff,I've learned that you got use same ideas when you see White is playing that kinda game; Queens and bishop combinations work
Great!!!!!
Genius!!

@linktruman23 I know, that's Morphy's genius. HOWEVER, this really is just somebody falling for a simple opening trap, and nothing more.
CommunityCam 9 months ago
To be honest, I'm not actually that impressed. His opponent fell for a simple king's gambit trap. That's not how you play king's gambit correctly.

Thanks for this replay of a Paul Morphy classic. Morphy makes Chess look so simple when you see games like these.

You mean d7? b7 is occupied by a pawn. King can't move to d7 because White Queen is guarding that square.
