I had the opportunity to beta test this game, and the combat is not any more interactive than WoW or similar games. Vindictus is actually a game I'd give props for having a fluid combat system.

It's very reminiscent of my experience with DCUO. It's really fun for about 30-50 hours, then meh. SWTOR and DCUO give you absolutely no tools or incentive to do anything but solo. Warhammer Online (although a kinda shitty game) did something right with public quests. Other games should steal that.

@Hukuiooo I'm pretty sure if you were able to do combat as fast paced as you do in WoW, i.e. you leveled your warrior all the way to 85, previously brought down the LK, etc. basically just saying you have an experienced character, he'd be able to move his disgruntled 3-skeleton player model behind him to deflect a sword. Instead, he just stands like he's retarded and has never seen combat or been hit from behind. SWTOR is more realistic as a character focused game.
That wow example is bad. Nobody plays the other 2 games(at least not enough to equally compare) . This is either a HARDCORE Star Wars Fanboy or a really good troll. Personally I see barely any difference at all. The way players make contact during battle is the least of my worries. I care about content, and the amount of it and how fun it can be, not shiny flashes everytime lightsabers hit each other.

The video goes on about the combat in other MMO's being "just stand there and hit the mob"...then they try to contrast this by showing a load of SWTOR clips where the player is just STANDING THERE HITTING A MOB (but they put some exciting music over the top to fool the more gullible viewer)...brilliant.
And the WoW clip was just a pet hitting a mob, that is not a good example of WoW combat.

Have you looked at any good pvp videos? And EQ2? you show a guy standing still autoattacking a mob? EQ2 has got the biggest variety of skills/spells of any mmorpg and the combat feedback was way before its time when it was new.. knockbacks that blurs your vision etc.

@beyOndzZz its basically the same thing, except 3 or 5 people Pew Pewing 1 person. wanna see something more realistic? go to a dojo (martial arts school) and watch them spar. Graphics is not the key factor if a game is successful or not. look at minecraft, it is very basic, and fun to play.
however the cover mechanic actually did exist in Tabula Rosa, however the game was not a huge hit. it was quite fun as a FPS alternative MMO. there was only like 9 different enemys? so it lacked a bit.
@beyOndzZz wow is still gay played wow off and on since creation. Wow lvl85 BG was 5-10X slower than star wars galaxies' pvp which was the best in any game & whose players will be the pro at this games pvp i bet.

You do know that speed doesn't = good fast paced combat? If you have WoW gameplay and fast forward it you still get that choppy animation only done faster. What SWTOR is trying to do it it's trying to make movement flawless by adding synchronizing hits that feel real and not forced. And obviously it will be executed quickly. Star Wars is KNOWN for its fast paced lightsaber battles, derp.

SWTOR companion animations/combat is exactly like that of your player, so there is no excuse arguing the fact that a pet was shown rather than a player character. I played WoW and I can safely say NO it is not the same as "wow in length of fighting". Can't wait for SWTOR to come out, hopefully it wont be a let down from what I have seen/heard.

No. Within the first minute of this video you can see the difference between SWTOR's combat and the other MMOs' combat (1v1). WoW and other MMOs are so choppy, it's disgusting, so what good would it do to have choppy player animations in WoW Arenas or BGS where there are lots of people? Rational thinking would lead one to believe that the same animations will still be done just with more players which will = choppy and shit animations, while SWTOR is flawless and perfect.

I find it hilarious that they show AoC combat as being standing in front of each other. Whoever made this video is full of shit and has obviously never played the game. Have a look at some good AoC PvP videos. No other MMO requires that much movement and timing and skill to play the game.
Besides SWTOR. Name an MMO where weapons clash. Name an MMO where you can take cover. Name an MMO where you can deflect something with your weapon (Without it saying DEFLECTED and nothing happening). Name an MMO with 17 worlds. Name an MMO that is FULLY voiced. Oh, whats that? You cant name one? Thus SWTOR, is the ultimate MMO.
I like the idea of the sabers blocking other sabers and weapons. It's a pretty neat looking bit of game play. I think it still could be more smooth but I'm not gonna judge the game based on a year old video

@xXbattlenexus22 The only thing that stands out in the combat is the parry's. It looks cooler and works better than all other mmos. But other than that, the combat is just okay. It is not quite as responsive or smooth as more polished games such as WoW. It is still beta, but as of right now I would say the combat is inferior to alot of other MMO's

I'm afraid that SWTOR combat is going to be very stiff, particularly in pvp. Yeah, it looks cool, but if you notice in EVERY clip the characters are never moving. I don't want pvp to simply be running up to the guy and smashing buttons.

I'm a huge MMORPG fan and Star Wars fan and I think this game looks like sh**. The graphics are worse than WoW's, which is getting pretty old and the combat is boring. I feel extremely disappointed, because I was hoping I could ditch WoW for this. Not gonna happen though.
@fayytth I don't base games on graphics. I play minecraft. But in a game like this they're important, since a MMORPG is supposed to last more than 5 years if it's good. And if the graphics look muddy right now, in 5 years they'll be completely unbearable. Plus, the graphics are what annoy me the least in this game. The combat looks really bad. And the combat makes up most of the gameplay, so... But if people are saying it looks better now, I'll give it a chance.

@jakA7X13 Here are a few reasons why I think you are wrong. 1. Rift had no fans at release it was a brand new game and it really was lame. All races and classes started in the starting zone for their faction. So every time you made a new character you had to do the same quests over and over. 2. WoW had a strong fan base before release. Blizzard had millions of players playing multiple games that converged on to WoW like locusts. Star Wars is by far the biggest fantasy franchise in the world.

@Kaleb6k So a Felguard (a melee minion) attacking an Owlkin, a melee creature is a ranged attacking a melee now? The main point of that was to show that attacks don't connect with each other, as in SWTOR, they do, such as melee weapons colliding when attacking.

I'm not a fan of wow by no means anymore but I find it funny how they use a clip from wow where a pet is attacking a mob and using that to compare to their game so it looks better. No, wow doesn't have much better combat that the pet vs mob clip but their actual player character combat looks better that what they are trying to show here in swtor. Sorry but major fail on their part. Maybe the next SW game will actually try a new combat system rather than trying to 1 up the current competition.

The video goes on about the combat in other MMO's being "just stand there and hit the mob"...then they try to contrast this by showing a load of SWTOR clips where the player is just STANDING THERE HITTING A MOB (but they put some exciting music over the top to fool the more gullible viewer)...brilliant.
And the WoW clip was just a pet hitting a mob, that is not a good example of WoW combat.
I'm quitting WoW for SWTOR, so I'm not biased, just pointing out the flaws in this video.

@beyOndzZz its basically the same thing, except 3 or 5 people Pew Pewing 1 person. wanna see something more realistic? go to a dojo (martial arts school) and watch them spar. Graphics is not the key factor if a game is successful or not. look at minecraft, it is very basic, and fun to play.
however the cover mechanic actually did exist in Tabula Rosa, however the game was not a huge hit. it was quite fun as a FPS alternative MMO. there was only like 9 different enemys? so it lacked a bit.

You do know that speed doesn't = good fast paced combat? If you have WoW gameplay and fast forward it you still get that choppy animation only done faster. What SWTOR is trying to do it it's trying to make movement flawless by adding synchronizing hits that feel real and not forced. And obviously it will be executed quickly. Star Wars is KNOWN for its fast paced lightsaber battles, derp.

The animations are the same nonetheless. If they aren't, then that takes away from the quality of the overall game, no? SWTOR companion animations/combat is exactly like that of your player, so there is no excuse arguing the fact that a pet was shown rather than a player character. I played WoW and I can safely say NO it is not the same as "wow in length of fighting". Can't wait for SWTOR to come out, hopefully it wont be a let down from what I have seen/heard.

No. Within the first minute of this video you can see the difference between SWTOR's combat and the other MMOs' combat (1v1). WoW and other MMOs are so choppy, it's disgusting, so what good would it do to have choppy player animations in WoW Arenas or BGS where there are lots of people? Rational thinking would lead one to believe that the same animations will still be done just with more players which will = choppy and shit animations, while SWTOR is flawless and perfect.

It is not quite as responsive or smooth as more polished games such as WoW. It is still beta, but as of right now I would say the combat is inferior to alot of other MMO's

I dont see how you can down WOW here with the bad clip you chose to show between a warlock pet and a boomkin that doesn't even melee people. Your "point" was horrible in explanation. If you show 2 characters who know how to play there classes in WOW in combat you will see far more movement and skill based on timing and use of skills. This is such a inaccurate video. The only thing that looks insteresting is the cover system. Other than that it is still the same as WoW where you just stand around and hit buttons (I watched the 2011 footage of a guy playing a bounty hunter with his pet blizz) Nothing really new, and as far as dynamic combat

And if the graphics look muddy right now, in 5 years they'll be completely unbearable. Plus, the graphics are what annoy me the least in this game. The combat looks really bad. @jakA7X13 Here are a few reasons why I think you are wrong. 1. Rift had no fans at release it was a brand new game and it really was lame. All races and classes started in the starting zone for their faction. So every time you made a new character you had to do the same quests over and over. 2. WoW had a strong fan base before release. Blizzard had millions of players playing multiple games that converged on to WoW like locusts. Star Wars is by far the biggest fantasy franchise in the world.

I'm sorry but a lot of the fight scenes shown that didn't involve blasters bolts being reflected or lightsaber clashes were little different than the clumsy wow animations

I'm not a fan of wow by no means anymore but I find it funny how they use a clip from wow where a pet is attacking a mob and using that to compare to their game so it looks better. No, wow doesn't have much better combat that the pet vs mob clip but their actual player character combat looks better that what they are trying to show here in swtor. Sorry but major fail on their part. Maybe the next SW game will actually try a new combat system rather than trying to 1 up the current competition.

@nio1998 instead you get updates with more and more content for what you pay for meaning that your game will never really die out of content or updates etc. it costs money to pay devs and server admins and gamemasters you know...

I feel that comparing an upcoming title with games that have been out for for several years is kinda weak. It's great that SWTOR is coming out with a better combat system than what was used a couple years ago, but how will it compare to other upcoming titles such as GW2 and TERA?

i hope SWTOR will be the same as moving around in combat same as PvP like in WoW they swirl around thier oppent and jump over them and get just a better advantage... not like stay in the spot when their att. and they can't move, CUASE THAT WOULD BE BULLSHIT
