@dblthnk02 real gauge depends on ur hand size,,hence there is NO real gauge IDIOT..funny how ur telling me 2step off,but u dont have ANY videos of u playing guitar on ur page HAHAHA POSER<<
@dblthnk02 oh and btw..Danny Gill from licklibrary uses 9.5 super lights and hes one of the best guitarists on youtube, and hes NOT skinny like i am either, tough guy
@EnveBeats I have skinny hands, and I don't use lights. I also don't know how to post videos, so you got me there.
But if I did, what you would see is called "rhythm." I don't play a bunch of distorted, hyperactive licks picking madly through a standard stack of hm scales that I learned out of books. I go for tone, feel, and- well, rhythm.
@dblthnk02 ok well i was born premature, and im ur same height but only 135lbs,im really skinny, and so r my hands,9s are perfect for me,how can u expect sum1 to use lets say slash's string size if they have a way smaller build,i just get pissed cuz alot of ppl say 9s r for pussys, and thats just not true,u wanna call sum1 a pussy how about yngwie, hes like 200lbs and uses 8s,now thats ridiculous, just sayn, different sting sizes r for ppl with different hands, thats my point
@EnveBeats It all boils down to grip strength. Body weight and height have nothing to do with it. All the muscles and muscle groups beyond my forearm are irrelevant to my grip. Maybe some people have less grip strength than others, but I think that virtually any guitar player can learn to use higher gauge strings. And they will get a better, meatier tone for it. Less tuning problems, too
Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky Custom Gauge Nickel Wound strings are what I use.
11 15 22p 30 42 54
The store I go to sell SO many different types of Ernie strings but I really love these strings. I like to play stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, Of Mice & Men, etc.
@PIKACHU49386 EB Beefy Slinkys definitely give tone depth and the obvious ability to tune down well below standard without the things going limp on you. But I have found that they just don't have any high end bite at all
ive used both alot, d'addario are not as well made as ernie ball, they loose brightness within a few days, and snap, with my playing, in 4 weeks time, ernie ball keeps brightness for much longer and are more sturdy, but elixir strings last forever <3
Elixir's are better than both. Last much longer and sound better IMO. I've had my set of Elixir's on for 2 months and they feel like week old D'addario's
The STHB string gauge is 10, 13, 17, 30, 42, 52 so playing them in standard will help with finger strength (especially when you're doing some intense finger excersize). They can take the tension (though on this guitar i have a floyd rose which eases some tension) STHB strings can go down to drop B but will sound a little slack, so use a heavier gauge for anything lower than C straight.
I have 2 guitars that are different shapes and have different pickups.
my custom guitar it is a superstrat shape, it has EMG's (81 and 85) with Ernie ball skinny top heavy bottom (STHB). The emg's make any strings sound great, though some people argue that emg's are all power and no tone, which i can understand. The ernie ball strings sound amazing when theyre new on a clean guitar (having a clean guitar always made me feel better playing).
EB-STHB in standard will be harsh on your fingers.
to me the ernies sound beefier . . . and the D'Addario's sound quite forward.
For a clean style . . . go for D'addario's, but they do also sound pretty awesome for heavier stuff with distortion.
Ernie ball's sound very very good for metal (in my oppinion) but once they start getting old i reccomend changing them asap, because the tone gets really stale and dead.
I personally love ernies supers theyre so clean with my esp pickups ( im shreading an ltd esp ec-10 *black lespaul* with ernies super slinky) sounds legit
Did you have to reset the bridge when changing between these two string brands...? Would you have to if you changed from stainless steel to nickel-wound...?
I don't mean to sound so clueless but I just got a guitar equipped with a Floyd and I need to know shit like this apparently.
@MikeSeagroves indeed... I dont think there is anything wrong with metal, its just that i would like hear the strings from more than one angle. I dont play music like this and i use EB slinks, and would like to compare them to other strings, more in the context of how I would use them. all in all its just a narrow demo, with no real insight as to what these different strings can offer! have a nice day
Both sound good although I like the Ernie Ball sound better. I've always liked Ernie's better although D'Addario seems to hold their "life" a bit longer.
D'addario is def alot less muddy then ernie. I'm saying this from experience, not the vid..It's a shame D'addario doesn't carry the gauges I need for one of my guitars..so that one has ernie ball, but the rest d'addario
for me it's the opposite. Ernie Ball strings are more bright and last longer than D'addarios, unless I use the Pro Steels set, which wears frets faster.
This comparison is clearly not valid at all. Tone comes from your hands. The way your fingers and pick interact with the strings is what will determine the way they sound FOR YOU. Same thing with comparing woods and pickups.
@mr4y Tone does NOT come from your fret hand, I can assure you that. That's just a fact. How could your fingers affect the sound when the fret is locking the string down, and your fingers are outside of the locked-in vibration part of the string?
Tone comes from your guitar, and your amp settings.
@2012Romney Nobody holds the string in place the same way or uses exatcly the same string action. Also, we play guitar with both hands. The place where you pick, the way you hold the pick, the pick material, how hard you attack the string. Scientifically, the fretting theory is correct, but no fretwire is exactly the same and will react the same way, even thought they're made with the same materials. There are so many variables that determine how your tone is. You just can't point only 2.
@mr4y The way you pick DOES affect tone, absolutely. What kind of strings you have affects tone, absolutely.
But for the most part, by and large, your guitar (its pickups, wood, craft quality, etc), and amp determine your tone. Your fretting hand has nothing to do with it.
@2012Romney Remember, when you push the string down the fret, you're bending the string. String bends differ in tone, different strings bend with different characteristics. How hard you "bend the string" down the fret has relation with finger pressure. So your fret hand does affect the tone.
... did you try it? Notice that all it does is slightly alter the pitch, almost negligibly? It doesn't change the tone. Tone is not the same as pitch. Tone is defined by the shape of the acoustic waveform.
For instance... a square-like pulse produces a more distorted tone, with more bite. A purely sinusoidal wave produces a clean tone.
Stretching the string does not alter the way it produces acoustic waveforms, just the frequency at which they oscillate.
@2012Romney If I'm wrong, then why harmonics on mathemathical strings are different than harmonics on a real string? Since they repond the same way as you stated, they should respond the same way in all sittuations.
@mr4y Have you ever learned about simple harmonic motion?
It's called Physics 4, in case you're wondering.
Anyway, I'll just give an example and cut to the chase. When you do a 7th fret natural harmonic, the way you get a high sound is by dividing the length of the string into thirds (the 7th fret happens to be 1/3 the distance from the headstock to bridge), and you actually create a scenario with 3 oscillating thirds of the string, which oscillate with 3x the frequency of the open string.
@mr4y They aren't. They are either natural harmonics or pinch harmonics.
Natural harmonics are based on your finger dividing the string into halves, thirds or fouths (12 fret, 7th, or 5th).
Pinch harmonics result from your thumb smacking the string, producing a high pitch, and your skin on your thumb blocks out the low frequencies of the string, so the high pitch stands out.
Am I the only that experience ernie balls breaking during restring? Cause it happened to me more than 3 times and when I use D addario they never break during re string
@CrushedJustice It was the complete opposite for me. I have never broken an ernie ball in 11 years of playing, but d'addarios break the second i start stringing up. I think it just differs from person to person. Another example is that EBs dont rust at all for me, where D's rust after a week. I find that DRs are a happy medium.
@babywithacrowbar yee my D's rust pretty fast but they last longer my EB's don't rust fast but they don't last very long. Idk if this effects anything but I use the tremelo alot
@CrushedJustice@babywithacrowbar it all depends how you restring, i bet both you fucked up when winding the strings around the post and it broke at the headstock..
@metallica5252 it differs sometimes I would get the breaks at headstock and other times they break in the locking saddle when im doing dives and squels to help stretch the strings.
@djmm1397 my ernie ball super slinky's are on my guitar for over a year now and not even a spot of rust..... no there not stainless steal and yes i play very often
Every d'Addario set I've tried over 20+ years required pulling. You know what I mean: you tune the string to pitch, then it goes flat so you have to tighten it. The first week with new d'Addarios requires you to tighten your fine tuners all the way, and unlock your locking nut several times!
Not so with Ernie Balls Super Slinky's. Tune up once with no pulling, lock the nut and forget about them. Just some fine tuner adjustments if you move them while palm muting.
im waiting for 2 packs of Ernie Ball 11-54 beefy slinkys to arrive ;) and btw is it a good idea to tune to E standard with those strings? i want to play in drop C but also standard :/
If I create a story it is real if my eyes are open and I see a table then I close my eyes and I can still see the table, it is real! Even though it not physical, an in my sight, does not mean it is not real, but I found the realist, the truth, the answer to all! The more you seek the unseen the more you will see it; click my name if you’re tired of sadness, pain.
The D'Addario sounded more loud and clear to me, which would make any mistake more obvious (not sayin you made mistakes). The earnies sounded more muddy and muffled which gives the bonus of masking little mistakes more and thus may be better for a beginner as to not discourage them as much. Interesting demo thanks for uploading.
D'addario gives you more harmonics, squeals, and metal crunch! On a strat they are supreme as well. They are cleaner on clean channelsl and add more grit and less buzz on distorted channels. The XL nickel wound is the best all around string on the market. The only ones that might be better are the Elixar brand gold plated strings. I have yet to try them though.
D'addario strings have more bass and are suitable for heavy riffing instead of Ernia Balls strings which have more treble and they are more suitable for rock 'n' roll riffings!
The only problem I have with this "comparison" is the fact that you used distortion to do it. The only way to accurately compare strings is to play them clean.
All in all though; the D'Addario's seem like they have a heavier chug a lot more than the Ernie Ball's. The Ernie's seem like they have a crunchy djent kinda sound. But really that's all personal preference.
my Dadarios lasted 3 months and on the 3rd month they still sounded and looked great. i decided to change them not because they were old but cause i was changing gauge. my recent Dunlop strings lasted 1 month and they are rusty and sound/feel like shit
one thing to put in mind is that the d' addario strings (which sound great) are more wear and tear on your frets. while the ernie balls are not. i prefer the regular slinkies my self, i would try the d' addario's, but i don't feel like having to re fret my axe every couple of months. plus i think the ernie balls just play faster i.m.o.
I've wondered for so long why everyone prefers D'Addario over Ernie Ball strings and I have finally come to a conclusion...D'Addario = Metal while Ernie Ball = Rock & Roll / Blues and these days it's all about Metal.
9 gauge is way too light for me...I like the Beefy Slinky 11-54. Thicker strings = better overall tone.
ernies sound heavier

Ernie Ball has a more rounded even tone....D'addario is thinner with less body
Anthonyxander 5 months ago
the EB's have a "duller" tone to me. Long time D'A fan/EB hater here lol
radkins80 5 months ago
but what is advisable for a les paul? pls guys. ., =(
stringclasher01 5 months ago
Every d'Addario set I've tried over 20+ years required pulling. You know what I mean: you tune the string to pitch, then it goes flat so you have to tighten it. The first week with new d'Addarios requires you to tighten your fine tuners all the way, and unlock your locking nut several times!
Not so with Ernie Balls Super Slinky's. Tune up once with no pulling, lock the nut and forget about them. Just some fine tuner adjustments if you move them while palm muting.
d'A = garbage; EB = awesome

D'addario all the way. i've used a lot of different gauges and brands and i always come back to the ProSteels in 13-56. they're the perfect strings.
BeyondCocytus 6 months ago
of all strings i've tried, i'd say d'addario.

im waiting for 2 packs of Ernie Ball 11-54 beefy slinkys to arrive ;) and btw is it a good idea to tune to E standard with those strings? i want to play in drop C but also standard :/
duiytre 7 months ago
@duiytre I would never attempt standard with Beefy Slinkys, drop c is great, even Eb, but that extra half step seems ridiculous.
FourthHorseman666 6 months ago
@duiytre Metallica uses Power Slinkys for E and Eb... But use Beefy for D Standard. It shouldn't matter.

honestly for metal players i think earnieball is best, D`adario are good for everything else

How does pinch harmonic sound on both the strings?
Hansykes94 7 months ago
Thats a very long riff !!!!
mgfdh 7 months ago
Apples versus oranges!
The EB's are tin-coated steel-core, whereas the d'A's are plain steel (as far as I can tell from their own description on the website!)
This might be why the d'A's are more raunchy and aggressive: more output, more shrill.
But uncoated steel strings on silver-nickel frets is moronic; you will wear your frets in a couple of years and need a re-refretting job.
Steel strings need steel frets.
Stick to nickel-plated steel. Tin sucks; not ferromagnetic!

D'addario all the way. 10-52 is beast.
Deathz0r94 8 months ago
the balls always give a better g string. lol.
ollyarcadia 8 months ago 2
The D'Addario sounded more loud and clear to me, which would make any mistake more obvious (not sayin you made mistakes). The earnies sounded more muddy and muffled which gives the bonus of masking little mistakes more and thus may be better for a beginner as to not discourage them as much. Interesting demo thanks for uploading.

D'addario is heavier
mitliko12 8 months ago
D'addario gives you more harmonics, squeals, and metal crunch! On a strat they are supreme as well. They are cleaner on clean channelsl and add more grit and less buzz on distorted channels. The XL nickel wound is the best all around string on the market. The only ones that might be better are the Elixar brand gold plated strings. I have yet to try them though.
Xcorgi 8 months ago 2
I'm sorry.. Fender and Dunlop Are my favorites. They don't break as easy and they have a crisp clean tone and is easy to manipulate the sound.
starfoxstarwolf5423 9 months ago
Probably Ernie Ball.

i prefer the sound of those d'addario's, it scoops the mids even more! Loads more low end too!

Personal opinion is key, I hate d'addario electric guitar strings, but I do like their acoustic strings.
D'addario just sound too bright on my already bright guitar.

Ernie Ball strings sound more metal, i think i will try them. Your videos are very helpful, very objective and good quality, keep making reviews pls!

D'addario strings have more bass and are suitable for heavy riffing instead of Ernia Balls strings which have more treble and they are more suitable for rock 'n' roll riffings!

omg! a video on guitar strings lol!
missinglink27 10 months ago
The only problem I have with this "comparison" is the fact that you used distortion to do it. The only way to accurately compare strings is to play them clean.
All in all though; the D'Addario's seem like they have a heavier chug a lot more than the Ernie Ball's. The Ernie's seem like they have a crunchy djent kinda sound. But really that's all personal preference.
Digbah1018 10 months ago
my Dadarios lasted 3 months and on the 3rd month they still sounded and looked great. i decided to change them not because they were old but cause i was changing gauge. my recent Dunlop strings lasted 1 month and they are rusty and sound/feel like shit
FrozenSparky 10 months ago
D'Addario sounded brighter to me
ISBSA1 10 months ago 41
@ISBSA1 you're right, dadarrios are a little more bright, the ernie's are a little warmer.
ihatebobsaget1989 9 months ago
one thing to put in mind is that the d' addario strings (which sound great) are more wear and tear on your frets. while the ernie balls are not. i prefer the regular slinkies my self, i would try the d' addario's, but i don't feel like having to re fret my axe every couple of months. plus i think the ernie balls just play faster i.m.o.

crovian1985 11 months ago
I've wondered for so long why everyone prefers D'Addario over Ernie Ball strings and I have finally come to a conclusion...D'Addario = Metal while Ernie Ball = Rock & Roll / Blues and these days it's all about Metal.
9 gauge is way too light for me...I like the Beefy Slinky 11-54. Thicker strings = better overall tone.

shite vs shite. i see the advertising has worked . both of these brands suck . go get some DRs, Dunlops, Dean Markleys or Dr. Ducks.
