it's a great score and it really made the movie but the story of the movie isn't true. john nash wasn't brilliant, maybe by economics standards but that's hardly the same.
@artificus avatar was a bit different from what he normally works on, i think avatar was very more action based, honer is good with sad stories with lost of emotion going on and stuff people can connect to.
@DoctorMustafaSaad - I don't know where you got your facts, but Horner was born in California to Austrian parents. That's where his accent comes from.
For a movie like avatar, that is supposed to be epic, with the biggest bugget in movie history, you need John Williams, no exceptions. Horner is good, but not for action epics. The Avatar score was a major let down for me. I hate it when movie scores suck.
J. Horner: good composer, but, man, does he "borrow" from Rachmaninoff, Holst, Wagner, Schumann... you name it. I'm not talking about generic ideas on harmony or form, but pretty much entire chunks of music... On the last BBC Music magazine issue they talk about movie composers' "borrowings", and Horner sure figures strongly in the article. But I understand....I guess you have to do that when you have so many hours of film to score. The pressure and little time must be stressing ;-)
On a really 'neutral' point of view, I don't see when he ever did that : I listen to a lot of his scores and I never got this feeling of repetition from one soundtrack to another. If you have any precise example, please, tell me : I'd be glad to understand why so many people seem to think that about James Horner !
I just heard the score auf "Sneakers" with Robert Redford and was like: Wow, I bet the guy composing this has already made "A beautiful mind". Similar Style. Great!!
When I learned that James Horner did the music score for Avatar, I was like, "Oh WOW!!" and when I saw the movie, I was like, "Holy Crap, you did it again James.":D
Because James always gives a score with an emotional response and for me it's No. 1 composer for James Horner. You're the man James.:)
This awesome music really tells the greatness of the Story and the genius of James Horner. I admire very much the movie because of this music of this great Genius.

Where do I begin? The Pirates of the Caribbean theme is an almost literal quote from the soundtrack to Gladiator It also has strong similarities to The Rock, The Last Samurai, Spirit, King Arthur, and too many more to tell. Don't get me wrong. His style is very unique, but still redundant. That is probably why he hasn't received an Oscar® nomination since 2000.

Maybe I haven't heard enough Hans Zimmer, but of all of it I have heard, it is far from self recycling. I'll agree that James Horner does this but Zimmer, i find, is the only movie score composer that has a huge variety of sounds (Black Hawk Down compared to Pirates)...other than that, totally agree with your post.
your quite right on Zimmer. Its something he speaks about in interviews how every score is a new project and how he finds it daunting to come up with something new each time. The problem I think is people don't realise that similarities are a result of it being the same composer with the same musical tastes. Not laziness. look at beethoven Mozart etc. we can often recognise the music of these composers because they write in their own style. Nothing has changed in this respect
I thoroughly disagree. You need to research other composers and hear their works before saying something like that. Their are many higher ranked film composers in history such as Max Steiner, Alfred Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Danny Elfman, Bernard Herrmann, Thomas Newman, and Maurice Jarre. Plus, Horner has frequently been know to almost literally quote his own work. If you liked this, you should rent Bicentenial Man and listen to the many obvious similarities.
hey friend i can udnerstand. im sorry i wasnt clear there. whatever names u have mentioned i have never heard those names..i know they might be more famous..i just said it coz i know only these 2...and there is nothing wrong in having a choice of our own legends right...i respect what u have said...thanks...
do you guys believe that the atmosphere of this kind of documentary is meant to be that warm and glowing to win people's hearts? because everytime i watch the six minutes i feel like "wow i love that magic world and i so want to add my part to it!!"
The score fits the movie beautifully, and Charlotte Church's voice adds this wonderful ethereal quality to the songs. My favorite is "Saying Goodbye to Those You So Love." I listen to it all of the time.
"A beautiful mind" has one of the most brilliant scores of all time. James Horner is truly a genius and understands what kind of atmosphere and vibe a movie needs to lift above the mainstream stuff.
I agree with you on Hans Zimmer, but if you listen to brilliant soundtracks like the "Prince of Egypt", "Pirates of the Carribean", and "Lion King" you might feel as disappointed as I did when I listened to the Dark Knight. Maybe, Maybe not, but I certainly feel like Hans could of done more with the Motif.
Its my lifelong dream to meet James Horner, my absolute favorite composer... he's wicked amazing... the song "creating governing dynamics" is absolutely insane!
That movie certainly got me in part by it's music. It's so amazing that I sometimes hear it when I'm working in my lab... maybe I'll get a Nobel prize too, hehe.

I really like the opening music of the movie. But then I heard the music of Searching For Bobby Fischer and especially Bicentennial Man, and the music is EXACTLY THE SAME! Horner should have a little shame, and write original music and not rip himself off over and over again. Examples: Titanic, Braveheart, Apollo 13, Deep Impact, etc, etc. Always the same melodies.
What you just did was reveal yourself to be like a typical moviegoer who clearly doesn't pay much mind to the score.. I'm also guessing you're one of those folk who seems to believe that all classical music sounds the same :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I love movie scores, and also like cassical music, and other types of music, I love music! But what I said is a fact! Just listen to Horner's scores. Some melodies are EXACTLY the same. I love the Glory and Braveheart scores, by the way. So you see I am not simply bashing the guy. But I was kind of dissapointed when I realized how "lazy" he can be.
i dont think its laziness. its quite possibly a mark of his. every composer has a mark. if one should listen to any score, one should be able to pinpoint the composer just by listening to the music especially if one has never heard it before.
James Newton Howard and Harry Gregson-Williams have also done decent amounts of experiementation. I've heard James Newton Howard's scores flex from African drums in the Dinosaur soundtrack to Polynesian rhythms and Irish dancing in the Water Horse soundtrack.
Danny sounds the same? A few times I've listened to scores before looking at the composers name and not realize it's Mr. Elfman. Out of all the composers for film out there, I would say the one who sounds the same almost every time is mister Horner. That's not saying he doesnt write good music because he does . . . he just doesnt experiment. Examples would be the late Jerry Goldsmith and Elfman in terms of experimentation.
What I loved about this film was the way they made John Nash out to be such a facinating person. My own son is only 8 years old but he posseses a certain quirkiness in his behavior that is a little off-putting to his peers. Like the John Nash character he is complex and seems to have peaks and valleys. I love trying to figure him out.
I didn't know he was British. Blimey! Always thought he was American. Our composers, like Trevor Howard, Peter Brewis, and the like, have not had such success, which is a shame.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
HE IS NOT BRITISH!!! LIKE HIS FAKE MUSIC HE HAS A FAKE ACCENT!!! Lived over there, but was NOT born there. James Crap Horner contiues to steal off many composers including himself.
Ah, now I'm confused. Come on though, Aliens and Brainstorm were enjoyable enough. I mean, he's no Ennio Morricone, but he's also no worse than Danny "it all sounds the same" Elfman either. You're right about his plagerism though. I was trying to be kind I suppose

Yeah, he quotes himself a lot - and so does Hans Zimmer - that's not a issue with film music, though.
The average viewer barely remebers the main theme, I think it's perfectly ok to occasionally recycle a snippet as long as it works for the scene.
That said, I find Horner way more inventive than Zimmer.
I think "Kaleidoscope" would be out of Zimmer's reach.

ar rahman and james horner the best of all times.
chetan787 2 years ago
I thoroughly disagree. You need to research other composers and hear their works before saying something like that. Their are many higher ranked film composers in history such as Max Steiner, Alfred Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Danny Elfman, Bernard Herrmann, Thomas Newman, and Maurice Jarre. Plus, Horner has frequently been know to almost literally quote his own work. If you liked this, you should rent Bicentenial Man and listen to the many obvious similarities.

do you guys believe that the atmosphere of this kind of documentary is meant to be that warm and glowing to win people's hearts? because everytime i watch the six minutes i feel like "wow i love that magic world and i so want to add my part to it!!"

The score fits the movie beautifully, and Charlotte Church's voice adds this wonderful ethereal quality to the songs. My favorite is "Saying Goodbye to Those You So Love." I listen to it all of the time.

"A beautiful mind" has one of the most brilliant scores of all time. James Horner is truly a genius and understands what kind of atmosphere and vibe a movie needs to lift above the mainstream stuff.

yeah i agree think James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer are up there too for The Dark Knight
ANDYYEEE 3 years ago
I agree with you on Hans Zimmer, but if you listen to brilliant soundtracks like the "Prince of Egypt", "Pirates of the Carribean", and "Lion King" you might feel as disappointed as I did when I listened to the Dark Knight. Maybe, Maybe not, but I certainly feel like Hans could of done more with the Motif.

James Horner and John Williams - they're tied for best soundtrack composer in my book.

Agree but you have to include Thomas Newman for a 3 way tie.

Always the same melodies.
sacon05 3 years ago
What you just did was reveal yourself to be like a typical moviegoer who clearly doesn't pay much mind to the score.. I'm also guessing you're one of those folk who seems to believe that all classical music sounds the same :)
go you.

I love movie scores, and also like cassical music, and other types of music, I love music! But what I said is a fact! Just listen to Horner's scores. Some melodies are EXACTLY the same. I love the Glory and Braveheart scores, by the way. So you see I am not simply bashing the guy. But I was kind of dissapointed when I realized how "lazy" he can be.
sacon05 3 years ago
i dont think its laziness. its quite possibly a mark of his. every composer has a mark. if one should listen to any score, one should be able to pinpoint the composer just by listening to the music especially if one has never heard it before.
oprachik 3 years ago
I'm surrounded by those kind of people. The music emotionally speaks to us more than an acted out scene without music does
Castropher 3 years ago
James Newton Howard and Harry Gregson-Williams have also done decent amounts of experiementation. I've heard James Newton Howard's scores flex from African drums in the Dinosaur soundtrack to Polynesian rhythms and Irish dancing in the Water Horse soundtrack.

I have his cd of the soundtrack. One of the best if not THE BEST!
JPPT1974 3 years ago

Beautiful insight!
I feel the same way about my mum, but she's actually schizophrenic. This film was such a comfort, much less an incredible work of art.

WOOOOOOW!!!
I didn't know he was British. Blimey! Always thought he was American. Our composers, like Trevor Howard, Peter Brewis, and the like, have not had such success, which is a shame.

HE IS NOT BRITISH!!! LIKE HIS FAKE MUSIC HE HAS A FAKE ACCENT!!! Lived over there, but was NOT born there. James Crap Horner contiues to steal off many composers including himself.
UFOSPACE1999 3 years ago
Ah, now I'm confused. Come on though, Aliens and Brainstorm were enjoyable enough. I mean, he's no Ennio Morricone, but he's also no worse than Danny "it all sounds the same" Elfman either. You're right about his plagerism though. I was trying to be kind I suppose
