To answer your question, it's the actual entrance to AV. Back then you couldn't queue from capitals, so everyone had to gather at the bg entrance.

This is a pre Burning Crusade video , all horde where 60 and they where w8 for q for AV in Alterac Mountain , the mage(lvl 60 also) used POM Flamestrike + Blast Weave + many Arcane Explosion ...and in pre TBC ppl had like 4k hp max , but great pwning movie!
