  • And that counts for art to. because music is art in several ways

  • And that counts for art to. because music is art!

  • What is the most dramatic note I can play over this chord. Excellent words. Ones to catalog.

  • lo siento por Luca xDDDDD es broma ambos son geniales XDDDD

  • Hi HessFanclub

I'm new to playing Guitar I'm lefty do you suggest to get a lefty guitar or the standard one?? thanks in advance

  • Hello Tom! First of, I think you're an amazing guitarist. And this solo your doing right here is just stunning. Reminds me of Joe Satriani :) Anyways! I was wondering, what amplifier are you using here and what do you recommend for a nice metal/neo-classical tone? I'm right now using a Marshall MG100FX combo, which I am using in some of my video's including my three latest ones. Anyways, should I go fora Randall, Line6 or stick with Marshall? :)

  • Awesome very lyrical melodies !

  • awesome!

  • Interesting, his guitar playing reminds me of a mix of Friedman, Scholnick and Malmsteen. His brain seems to work like Friedman or more traditional Jazz guitarists who think about the chords and progressing they are soloing over.

  • nice guitar ...amazing sound

  • what scale are u soloing in, A minor ?? and your technique is awesome, beautiful bends and vibratos

  • he is the teacher of my teacher. hehe, grandteacher^^

  • This guy is a proper bender aint he?

  • its nice to see a fellow metal/rock musician that knows his theory well

  • cool thanks i have been looking for some things like this for long time

  • this is the guy with the insane amount of sustain on his guitar! =D

  • This is amazing! :D and the backing track he uses sounds so much like 'witches of the heath' by Buckethead haha!

  • This isn't his first time playing the guitar :)

  • what chord is being played in the background? it sounds so nice but i can't figure it out

  • @leopower7

Play your C#m and leave your B and high-E strings open. Then he goes to an A2. Just like your standard 1st position A chord, but leaving the same strings open.

  • @rodwyr you mean a9?

    never heard of an a2

  • amp settings?

  • i kno nothing about solos but i wana cover a an instrument.

plz tell me wher should i start from to learn solos. ?

i mean the first step that should be taken.. ? :)

    regards.

  • @vjlord Three note per string scales, hammer ons and pull offs.

  • @vjlord

the first step is to get a guitar and practice your ass off.

  • @vjlord learn scales start with the minor pentatonic

  • teaches right

  • so inspiring. i cant way to get home and strap on my guitar, i might play for hours.

  • Tom is a genius! He puts his heart and soul in playng...totally amazing

  • Great video. Still waiting on Opus 3.

  • does anyone know any vids where i can learn all the notes on the guitar and little things that are soo important before furthering my guitaring ?

  • Great video, has anyone knows the tab for solo at 2:13. İ couldnt solve that stuff :(

  • Hey its a great video. But i wonder whats the tab for the solo at 13. second has anyone knows?

  • Go Tom I've been to his site but i can't afford it. Heh Being poor sucks lol.

  • the rhythm guitar part in this reminds me of the song "Witches on the Heath" by Buckethead. it sounds just like it, only a few different notes.

  • I want that tone :(

  • One of the best online guitar teachers.

  • i like your solos. You don't play many or fast notes but each of your notes is so expressive and intense.

  • what chord notes are being played in the background ?

  • kind reminds me of joe satriani in his style of playing or is it just me

  • Whoever the "6"dislikes are can kiss my mix ass :p

  • am i the only one who has no idea what hes talking about? man the guy really knows his stuff....sick player as well......

  • How glad am I to have Tom as a teacher...

He's not only a master player, but a genuine and generous human being.

There's definitely more than meets the eye...

  • @Brotherinlow ahaha

  • he has really nice vibrato and amp tone

  • sir. can you help me how to figured out what chord tone will i use when the root cord is A,A#,B,Bm and so on.

  • damnit i love solo's, i like shred solo's and ballads, but the two combined take it to a new level, tere's zo much feeling you can put in it, or a melody stuck in your head. It's just great

  • awesome

Jeff Loomis has the same approach to vibrato, wait then apply.

    He's an amazing guitarist too.

  • Very nice technique. Your explanation of theory reminds me of something Elliot Easton of theCars once said. He mentioned how he studied theory not so much to help him with his playing or writing, but to be able to explain what he already knew and was doing to other musicians.

  • I don't really care for this type of music, but this guy certainly knows his shit. Seems like a good teacher as well as a very good technician.

  • that guy knos exactly wat hes doin!! thumbs up!!

  • sustain from hell on that guitar.. holy shit

  • sound's like dime bag xD

    Awesome

  • This is great info Tom!

  • Is there a way you could tell me how to re-create that tone? It's amaziing :D

  • damn the tone is cool

  • people can learn more from this than like ten other guitar youtube lessons combined. Insane technique's great but if you don't know how to use it then it's pointless.

  • LEGEND!!!

  • which is the cheapest ibanez and how much does it costs?

  • looks like a yamaha

  • he sure knows how to play the guitar (:

  • has anyone taken this guys correspondance lessons? do u have any advice about it... are they any good? how much do they cost? ive went on his wbsite but i cant find the price and want an unbias opinion

  • it's a good lesson

  • bin total aufgedreht und ungezogen heute wer will mit mir camen

  • it looks like an Ibanez RG series

  • what guitar is that?

  • looks like some kind of knock off strat

  • You obviously don't know much about guitars.

  • well my friend please enlighten me

  • It's an Ibanez.

    They're a famous guitar-making company.

  • exact model man i have an ibanez xiphos i build guitars so stop talkin shit about people you dont know and ive never seen a ibanez like that before just kinda kiddin around jack ass

  • This guitar is a Yamaha, not an Ibanez

  • I guess I should of known that, seeing as I have a Yamaha myself, heh.

  • You can see it in the headstock dude, the body does look a lot like an ibanez though, i get where youre coming from

  • looks like a yamaha on the headstock lol

  • wow?

  • good

  • Very nice solo

  • Thats a pretty nice fende. I only have a Squier. It doesn't sound the same with a cheaper guitar.

  • its all in your fingers mate...

  • how do you hold the notes so long?

  • I use my hand and wrist to keep the string in motion - and sometimes also use vibrato

  • Get a guitar with tons of sustain. What kind do you have?

  • I think he a crybaby pedal for it

  • wow what song is that?

i want to follow along it sounds cool

  • Tom, Great lesson on soloing. You are THE man!

    One of your dedicated students!

  • Great video, very helpful, enjoyable improvisation as well. Thanks!

  • thanks Mark :)

  • Name this song?

  • This was not a song, it is a lesson on improvising and soloing.

  • Oh! Thanks... xD

  • @HessFanclub LOL

  • @HessFanclub Hello, Would it be possible to have the Notes Tabed out?? I like the way Tom plays his solo in this lesson, I just wanted to learn the exact notes he was playing! Oh please!! Give me a break!

  • good lesson Rob Halford x)

    and brother of Kerry King

  • @ 1:09 that 5 to 3 thing sounds cool!

  • Thanks, yes it's actually 5 to 9 (or 2) and then bent up to 3. The 5 sets up the expectation in the listener's ear that the next note will be 1 (5 to 1 is extremely common) so when you go to 3 it adds to the drama that 3 naturally has over minor chords (minor 7th chord in this case)

  • Tom hess is one heck of a cool dude. I appreciate the explanations, or else it's just a guy noodling at a super high level.

  • good lessons sir.

  • OPUS 2 RULES

  • Very interesting!

  • I bought his recordamazing

  • :) he does talk alot, but his lesson and playing is worth dealing with all the talking. He is a master.

  • Yes I do talk a bit, but I know from experience that without the depth of explanation, most people won't fully understand what is going on in the playing/teaching. Thanks for the compliment though :)

  • Thats video is just another proof for me that I did the right thing in choosing him to teach me too!

Actually I can see progress after a week of "inhaling" his advice and practice what he teaches. I am confident this will continue in the next months if not years! It is all meaningful and to the point.

  • Thank you.

  • profound lesson. This is revolutionary for me. I had NEVER thought about any of these things before today!

  • Glad you have a new perspective, now the key is to 'implement' the ideas.

  • Great guy!

  • Good stuff please make more

  • I met Tom in Bulgaria. He was a cool guy

  • It's a Yamaha

  • Have his Cds, I wish I would be only 1% as good as him

  • I like this

  • interessant

  • Simply the best!

  • I WANT HIS LESSONSS!!!!!

  • He is great!

  • Very good!

  • I will check this right now

  • Its really good

  • this is cool, tom hess is a very great guitarist with perfect technique

  • Fucking great! Have to check out more about this

  • Cool!

  • very good vid. what kind of guitar is that?

  • your playing sounds really good Mr. Hess!

  • The chord that the other guy is playing for Tom is so cool and the solo stuff of course is awesome.

  • The chord progression was: C#m7 to Aadd9

  • my friend says shredders can't play with emotion, I just showed him Tom's playing videos and my friend shit a brick! He was stunned. Now he is a Hess fan. ha ha

  • I saw him on tour twice - he kicked major ass both times!

  • Is this the same Tom Hess who played in HolyHell?

  • Yes!

  • yep

  • Wow, this is a very popular video already!

  • I'm proud to be a student of Tom.

  • Thanks Norwid. I'm happy to have the opportunity to help you with your guitar playing and songwriting.

  • This is the bomb!

  • so fucking great.

  • PLEASE come to Spain for master class!

  • Intense guitar solo lesson!

  • Tom, do you teach these masterclasses often? How can I attend these and do you also do them in the US? Or only in Germany? You are obviously American, so where can I see you in US?

  • i can only imagine how awesome the entire master class must have been, wish I could have been there to see the whole thing!!!

  • It was a great event and the coolest part of the event was the people who attended and jammed and we had a lot of fun.

  • A++++

  • What guitar is that? I don't recognize the headstock.

  • Very nice! Thanks for sharing & ...

    Jam ON!

    -BB

  • Love the video. Particularly the severely sustained notes prior to vibrato.

  • Yes this is a great vocal technique and is pretty common there, but guitar players typically don't do this. It sounds great on guitar!

  • yeah, i luv the 9th you were talking about, I'm going to use that in my own solo

  • Yes, the 9th interval over minor chords is sweet! It's even better if the chord you are playing over has the 9th in it.

  • or at least a 7th, so in this case the 9th is a nice 3rd harmony to the 7th.

  • you have the best guitar tone, what amp are you using?

  • If I were to guess, I would say Roland Microcube...am I right Tom?

  • Yes exactly, a Roland Microcube. The tone comes more from the phrasing than the amp in this case.

  • rockin' brotha'

  • Tom, you have changed my life in so many ways. You have no idea who influential you have been on people like me.

  • I'm honored to have had the chance to help you in whatever ways I can.

  • Hail to the king

  • you are the most emotional guitar player I have ever heard

  • That means REALLY a lot to me as this is a huge goal of mine to be very expressive in my guitar playing and songwriting.

  • Have to check this guy out

  • Ill sign up today. Cant wait to start this.

  • great! CAn't wait to get started working with you :)

  • You are a great teacher! I love your lessons man!

  • thank you :)

  • .fucking cool website

  • This is great!!!!!

  • Awesome!

  • Forget all the other stuffthis is the thing!!!

  • +1 to everything already said

  • He is amazing and a great teacher!

  • Excellent

  • that first idea about bending from the wrong note is freakin genius man!

  • Yes it's a really cool way to enhance your phrasing

  • I think I can learn a lot of things from there

  • Thx, you helped me so much!!!!
