Hello Tom! First of, I think you're an amazing guitarist. And this solo your doing right here is just stunning. Reminds me of Joe Satriani :) Anyways! I was wondering, what amplifier are you using here and what do you recommend for a nice metal/neo-classical tone? I'm right now using a Marshall MG100FX combo, which I am using in some of my video's including my three latest ones. Anyways, should I go fora Randall, Line6 or stick with Marshall? :)
Interesting, his guitar playing reminds me of a mix of Friedman, Scholnick and Malmsteen. His brain seems to work like Friedman or more traditional Jazz guitarists who think about the chords and progressing they are soloing over.
Play your C#m and leave your B and high-E strings open. Then he goes to an A2. Just like your standard 1st position A chord, but leaving the same strings open.
damnit i love solo's, i like shred solo's and ballads, but the two combined take it to a new level, tere's zo much feeling you can put in it, or a melody stuck in your head. It's just great
Very nice technique. Your explanation of theory reminds me of something Elliot Easton of theCars once said. He mentioned how he studied theory not so much to help him with his playing or writing, but to be able to explain what he already knew and was doing to other musicians.
people can learn more from this than like ten other guitar youtube lessons combined. Insane technique's great but if you don't know how to use it then it's pointless.
has anyone taken this guys correspondance lessons? do u have any advice about it... are they any good? how much do they cost? ive went on his wbsite but i cant find the price and want an unbias opinion

@HessFanclub Hello, Would it be possible to have the Notes Tabed out?? I like the way Tom plays his solo in this lesson, I just wanted to learn the exact notes he was playing! Oh please!! Give me a break!
Thanks, yes it's actually 5 to 9 (or 2) and then bent up to 3. The 5 sets up the expectation in the listener's ear that the next note will be 1 (5 to 1 is extremely common) so when you go to 3 it adds to the drama that 3 naturally has over minor chords (minor 7th chord in this case)
Yes I do talk a bit, but I know from experience that without the depth of explanation, most people won't fully understand what is going on in the playing/teaching. Thanks for the compliment though :)
Thats video is just another proof for me that I did the right thing in choosing him to teach me too!
Actually I can see progress after a week of "inhaling" his advice and practice what he teaches. I am confident this will continue in the next months if not years! It is all meaningful and to the point.
my friend says shredders can't play with emotion, I just showed him Tom's playing videos and my friend shit a brick! He was stunned. Now he is a Hess fan. ha ha

Hintonme42 2 years ago
Yes, the 9th interval over minor chords is sweet! It's even better if the chord you are playing over has the 9th in it.
MikePhilippov 2 years ago
or at least a 7th, so in this case the 9th is a nice 3rd harmony to the 7th.
