  • Excellent sound quality on this version. Thanks so much for sharing this one.

  • cool, never heard this version before

  • 12 years old then.....the wonder years

  • this is one their many early recordings made by the BBC for promotional broadcast - it's not a "live" recording actually

  • Today is FRI-DAY!

    Did someone fry his banker?

  • ...just brilliant!!

  • I don't hear any overdubs and I personally believe that Phil is handling the 2nd vox. I saw Genesis on the Foxtrot tour and they were more than able to reproduce the LP sound.

  • @burgersoft777 Yeah, this was recorded in a BBC studio for radio broadcast - they just set up in the studio and recorded the song "live" - hence some of the bum notes you hear. There was *some* overdubs, though - you can hear Phil for sure, but also you can hear "double-tracking" of Peter's vocals sometimes (especially on some of the other recordings they made for the BBC like Watcher of the Skies and The Musical Box). Good stuff!

  • Anthony??? Gettus Realosaurus .

  • Indeed this is Steve standing. Please note the tubular bells behind Phil. This was the Foxtrot tour and the tubular bells were used towards the end of Super's Ready. Anthony Phillips was long gone by then he left in 1970. Phil Collins Joined in 1970 so the two would never have toured together.

  • This is probably not live on stage, but a radio recording with overdubs: Gabriel's vocals are doubled (it's almost certainly his voice twice, not Phil's Mike's or Anthony's). So is Steve's guitar in the introduction, as well as there being flute overdubs around 7:00. Also, it's not Steve standing in the photos, but Anthony Phillips, who is and was blond. . .

  • 6:15-6:25, wow! Sounds nothing like the studio!

  • I love the pics. Steve standing up ? Where are the pics from ?

  • @heehaa99 Croydon Fairfield Halls. Steve stood up for The Knife as the encore

  • @MusicManxxxxx Pic just changed!! so no idea for the second one.. still The Knife though

  • @MusicManxxxxx there I go.. talking to myself again!

  • this is awesome! where is it from??

  • "In the interest of humanity, they've been told they must go! go, go, go!"

This song, like so many other Genesis songs, has such powerful and symbolic lyrics

  • genesis were the best rock band at reproducing their stuff live. hands down

  • @WintersWar Yes were pretty good at that too!

  • @WintersWar and the eagles

  • Perchè non torni gioventù!!

  • Superb version no doubt but isn't this the Genesis Live version?

  • @DandyLion662 no its not i have that album

  • @DandyLion662

I don't think so. The bass is sounding different, the mix is not the same and various notes and drums fills are not the same.

  • spizenmäßig!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great, great, great version of this song! Absolutely brilliant!

  • any one have the band playing selling england by the pound

  • who's got this live w/footage...possibly their signature piece... imagine that gem!

  • Thanks for uploading this, Laserkev! Do you know where it was recorded?

  • Man, this version might even be better than the great one on the overlooked Genesis Live album. Thanks for putting it up.

  • The Foxtrot LP was brilliant I always enjoyed this tale off it. The inhumanity of it all!
