I'm 21 now, studying art historie @ university.So I'm not stupid but if you look at the symptoms of ADD, then I have ADD. It has been a problem in the past and now I'm still strugling from time to time.But life is hard on all of us so.. What Professor Spillane is saying is that it is dangerous to medicate without a medical pathology. Undesirable behaviour is not a sufficient reason to medicate. Anecdotally in the short term Ritalin "works" by giving children a chemical lobotomy - dampening creativity and thereby increasing compliant behaviour - but at what cost?

I really feel the only way people can say it doesn't exist is if they've never experienced it firsthand. Also, this guy is outright lying at some parts. For me, dx took 8hrs total. I had to take an IQ test, a general knowledge exam, and I had to submit past records of school performance. the testing is extensive. It's not just "lol, I want pills!" It's real, and I envy those that don't have it.
It has been proven that people with ADHD score significantly lower on the Working Memory portion of IQ tests compared to their non-ADHD peers. This has been confirmed regardless of age, gender, etc. They have also found that ADHD may not be so much a chemical imbalance as it as an impairment within the pre-frontal lobes which is considered the part of the brain responsible for executive functioning. I understand this man means well, but he's ignorant. This condition does exist.

@moll4596 It CAN be detected in a brain scan. People with ADHD have a severe drop off in activity in the prefrontal cortex during concentration, just when it should show an *increase* in activity. SPECT scans show that. People that take stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall with ADHD show *normal* SPECT scans and very abnormal scans without. What this doctor said was completely false. ADHD people also have smaller PFC areas due to atrophy, which is caused by non-use.

There are several tests that measure many aspects of the mind. One of the main tests is how long can a person can keep information in short term memory. A person with ADHD typically has very poor short term memory. The tests they give you are similar to IQ tests. Nobody is doubting the validity of IQ tests. At least I have never heard of anybody.

ADD is probably caused by environmental issues. An excessive amount of chemicals can alter people. For example, scientist have shown that if you heat plastic with ur food it can cause cancer. So probably using plastic and other chemicals can cause ADD

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 6.Never took any drugs though.My dad didn't want it. I'm 21 now, studying art historie @ university.So I'm not stupid but if you look at the symptoms of ADD, then I have ADD. It has been a problem in the past and now I'm still strugling from time to time.But life is hard on all of us so.. Maybe it is something medical, maybe not, I don't know.I do think that somewhere there is truth to ADHD, but it's not something you can't posebly manage without medication.

i think that people need to ensure that they have researched and understood a condition before they spark out mad comments. @MsXtiddlesx, the whole the issue is how the diagnosis is made. An illness or disorder is valid if it can be evidenced by a blood test, an Xray or a brain scan. What Professor Spillane is saying is that it is dangerous to medicate without a medical pathology. Undesirable behaviour is not a sufficient reason to medicate. Anecdotally in the short term Ritalin "works" by giving children a chemical lobotomy - dampening creativity and thereby increasing compliant behaviour - but at what cost?

Nobody, not even Spillane disputes that some children can be very difficult, have trouble reading and writing etc. He proposes a more humane and empathic path - find out how to bridge the disconnect a child is experiencing with there learning environment - not to drug them. I really feel the only way people can say it doesn't exist is if they've never experienced it firsthand. Also, this guy is outright lying at some parts. For me, dx took 8hrs total. I had to take an IQ test, a general knowledge exam, and I had to submit past records of school performance. the testing is extensive. It's not just "lol, I want pills!" It's real, and I envy those that don't have it.

It has been proven that people with ADHD score significantly lower on the Working Memory portion of IQ tests compared to their non-ADHD peers. This has been confirmed regardless of age, gender, etc. They have also found that ADHD may not be so much a chemical imbalance as it as an impairment within the pre-frontal lobes which is considered the part of the brain responsible for executive functioning. I understand this man means well, but he's ignorant. This condition does exist.

depression an extreme version of unhappiness? I'm pretty sure actual chemical differences are observable in a depressed brain, although I don't have access to a study database right now. Anyone who has had depression knows it is a lot more severe than just unhappiness. Also academic performance has been shown many times to be improved by ADHD medication, what he is saying is not correct. There are some issues with the reasons behind ADHD, though, society changing? Nutritional problems? etc.

-__-.....I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was a very little...I am in my 20s now and I still have ADHD. When I was a kid, I was not difficult, demanding or behaved badly; I listened to my parents, I rarely asked for anything and was he best behaved kid in my class. I used to take "medicine" to "help" with my ADHD as a kid and it made me depressed and suicidal. I no longer take the medicine and struggle everyday to handle my ADHD. Anyone who says that ADHD or ADD is a "myth" is poorly informed.

@moll4596 It CAN be detected in a brain scan. People with ADHD have a severe drop off in activity in the prefrontal cortex during concentration, just when it should show an *increase* in activity. SPECT scans show that. People that take stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall with ADHD show *normal* SPECT scans and very abnormal scans without. What this doctor said was completely false. ADHD people also have smaller PFC areas due to atrophy, which is caused by non-use.

Notice the prefrontal cortex has big holes in it. Activity goes DOWN in these areas instead of up. That's not supposed to happen. This information comes from a doctor that actually researches ADHD/ADD, and not some doctor that makes claims on TV without clinical practice in it.

There are several tests that measure many aspects of the mind. One of the main tests is how long can a person can keep information in short term memory. A person with ADHD typically has very poor short term memory. The tests they give you are similar to IQ tests. Nobody is doubting the validity of IQ tests. At least I have never heard of anybody.
