  • this somehow reminds me A LOT of VIP2:s poison gas level, but it at least offered something fair, by not having thousand of enemies on the screen at the same time,if a gimmick is to be focused to this 20sec time period, it should focus only in that, making the difficulty in terrain and not with enemies. Maybe in the special world this would be kind of acceptable. This comment is late, because I'm now stuck in this level and it makes me mad. It wants me to use tools. But... no. RAGE!

  • Right at 7:07 I heard a beeping noise covering up Chef Ramsey's swear word in the living room. Needless to say, it flowed with the video quite well.

    Oh, and it definately wasn't just you finding this hard. I found this to be probably the second hardest level in the game. And comepletely unbalanced; the area after the halfway point was a piece of cake!

  • The problem is definitely not you, Raocow. Yes, you made some minor mistakes, but if the timer's so unforgiving that a single mistake will get you killed, it's the level.

  • The "glitchy hit detection" shyguys have struck again. I guess they had off corner offsets or something, but they were still a bad part of the level.

    Also, on the ASMT subject, both hacks have had their tough levels, though I really enjoyed them both. Collab hacks in general tend to have difficulty spikes at certain points because different people have different difficulty standards.

    Anyway, I've missed a few lunches as well due to tough levels, so I hope yours was enjoyable!

  • Analysis of this level;

    Couldve had some leeway (30secs instead of 20)

    Shouldnt have spikes around after blind jumps due to the time crunching theme of the first section

    For the second section post-midpoint the foreground and background mixed

    And of course like most levels in SMWCP, too long of a level.

  • I dont mind the concept of this time thing, but you gotta learn it by repetition which is a cheap tactic and should never be like that

  • Yeah, this level was a real pain in the ass when I played it, so I feel for you, raocow. Honestly, the whole romhack was really subpar...

  • This stage was plenty nutters, I have to say. It's more PANIC MODE gameplay than genuine difficulty though.

  • From a watcher's perspective, ASMT was fantastic; I've never seen levels so amazing, or creative. From the player's perspective, Holy Sh*t.

    This hack is average / good, respectively.

  • Wow, the quality of the levels went from being really high in the castle and really low in this one. Not only is it too hard and unfun, but the art is intentionally confusing.

  • This level strikes me as like... The guy had the idea for the whole 20 second thing, but didn't really bother to test it while actually adhering to the 20 second limit, I dunno. I think even just changing it to 30 seconds would have made it a lot more reasonable overall, as-is there's a lot of stuff that requires precision that's pretty hard to pull off without at least savestates. I think it might be pretty fun and hectic if the timer were a bit longer, basically

  • There is no better word for that level than 'retardiculous'.

  • The timed segments would've been a lot better if (1) the time limit was 30-40 seconds, as 20 seconds has very little room for error; and (2) the buggy Shy Guys and those annoying Swoopers were replaced with something else.

  • Wow, what a stupid idea for a level. You basically need to know what's coming up in advanced in order to beat it, and that's just bad level design.

  • This level would have been completely fine if there had been a 20 block at 3:17 and if the 20 blocks at 4:38 had been above the bricks.

    It really wasn't that bad, I don't think. the graphics were great. I think it changed scenes too much, though.

  • water pressure lv was the only one as hard as this.

  • Yikes, how did the first half of that level pass quality checking? Any tester should have noticed that it's far too strict. The second half of the level was far better, but also fairly plain.

    Level designers need to learn that there has to be a balance between difficulty and length: the longer you must go without a checkpoint, the lower the difficulty has to be to not ruin the fun factor.

    I wouldn't try to compare this and ASMT, but I do smell hypocrisy in the air.

    As flawed as this hack is, there is a good amount of bias towards Raocow and ASMT (I'd like to know how his fans will react to Rupture in Reality), but that was to be expected anyway of those people.

  • I swear this hack makes ASMT look easy. I can play through ASMT without getting too frustrated and without wanting to press rewind every five seconds, I can't say the same for SWMCP.

  • A strict time limit with accurate platforming? That's what all the new hot platformers are doing lately! Super Meat Boy, Donkey Kong Country Returns...

  • Don't be discouraged, Raocow, ASMT was awesome. Clearly the good people at SWMC don't know what they're talking about... they did give mario a voice in this game after all. :3

  • Wow, can't believe how many vehement defenders it looks like this level has. Such extremely precise gameplay should only be a self-imposed challenge. When you only have one way you can possibly play a level and win, there's a problem with the difficulty. Not all people are TASers, and this level seems strict even for a speedrunner. Not to even mention all the OTHER trial-and-error ways you can die here.

  • I love ASMT, but it definitely had some unfair levels. You might not remember because you used rewind more than usual. Regardless of that, I think this level looks crazy hard. Well made, but hard. I don't think the problem is you.

  • @raocow Wow, didn't expect so much of a reaction from everybody. Let me say first, I love Raocow's videos, and I think ASMT was one of his best LP's. But let me give you an example of what I'm talking about. Video 23, "a gap the size of half an hour " (level "Ghosts Are Scary!" by BlackDS). That level was really unfair, and Raocow would undo some mistakes with rewinds. He would say, "I'm calling a mulligan here." That's not the only example. Just saying it happened more than usual during ASMT.

  • @Bertrudor Raocow used absolutely NO tools in ASMT. There was one bout where he said he placed a savestate in that "water pressure" level thing, but he didn't need to use it. He played ASMT completely legit, and he's awesome for that.

    ASMT = I got my only game over when fighting King Charles.

  • The timer section was absolutely ridiculous. It was basically designed for save states, and that makes me sad. It was like a forced TAS just about.

    The rest of the level was pretty alright though!

  • @justaguy12345 It's been said a lot of times that the levels are required to be completable without save states to be submitted. rao went on record himself to point that out.

    Each level is an ordeal, but it's a survivable one. Keep in mind he's not taking advantage of the purchasable items and his surplus of cash. It's a last resort that usually makes things considerably easier if it has to be used.

  • Hey Raocow, for a level like this i'd hate to say it but maybe you should re-introduce your 3 strike rule for save states. Ive gone back to your older vids, and i remember when you said if a level was just giving you too much trouble you would use them. I am pretty sure that this level had a million strikes against it. Awesome vid as always tho.

  • Raocow is just the type of person that just fucks up royally when he's pressured or panicking. Once you've figured out the layout, the level is merciful. Especially with the time.

  • The shuy guys are the worst "custom" enemy i have ever seen in a hack, you NEVER know if jumping on them are gonna hurt you or not and it's so fucking annoying.

  • This is not a very good level.

    It also belies the things the heads at SMWC tend to say about their desired difficulty. I'm wondering just what exactly their target audience was with this (besides themselves).

  • The white spikes on the white/light blue background make me fucking rage. You have to be blind jumping constantly to keep up with the timer, and it's almost impossible to see them coming.

  • It seems that the problem with collaboration hacks is that everyone wants their level to stand out, so they all make their levels ridiculous. That's why SMWCP is so difficult and seemingly randomly pieced together. Everyone has maybe one or two shots to make themselves stand out, so they put EVERY trick they have into one or two levels.

  • I mean seriously though. I was going to let it rest there, but this sort of thing seems to require a little more talking about:

    WHO OR WHAT thought that would be a good idea, and WHY?

    Sure, difficulty is cool, but with a time limit so unreasonable in a stage that you've never seen before, with hazards that do tend to make you wait around a bit unless you tackle them just right (Knowing they're there helps with that part) you HAVE to die until you figure it out.

  • Could have been a great deal more reasonable with checkpoints after ever mad sprint, even. Still wouldn't have seemed particularly fun to me, but at least "Reasonable", y'know? I've never even visited the SMWC, but I always got the impression that they FROWNED on unreasonable difficulty.

    AND EVEN UNREASONABLE DIFFICULTY can be all right if it's amusing as hell or cute or something.

    Like a sudden instakill giant bullet bill made of lava, I guess. Maybe. (Or not.) But this? Just Why?

  • Haven't watched the video or the LP yet, since I'm trying to finish this for myself first, but I was playing this level just last night and I couldn't even get past the first timed part. I probably died 30-40 times before just giving up for the night.

  • See, the time thiong is a good gimmick, but it's handled so poorly!

    - No "rest" point in the second part. It closes off the start specifically so you can't just wait there to catch your bearings

    - In an area so starved for time, placing spikes at the bottom of walls players will hug? Dick move. It's a cheap death generator, no excuses.

    - Why does Mario die in 20 seconds? Why do those panels save him? A cold so terrible he can't survive? Fine, the time is heaters. But this was... pointless.

    Then you would blame Imamelia (who also did Wild Wet Castle, a level several people consider to be one of the worst levels in the entire game).

    Though honestly, I would've replaced the Guy Guys in this level with something completely different.

  • The couple of "leaps of faith" where you can't see if there is anything under you and it turns out that there isn't even though the level suggests the opposite were a wonderful touch, i must say.

  • Raocow, as much as I enjoy your save-state-less videos more, if a level is going to take you an hour and a half I would rather see you use save states, at least to give yourself checkpoints.

  • This level would've been reasonable if not for the broken shyguys. As you can clearly see right near the start of the video, rao lands squarely on top of one and still takes a hit.

    The level itself, while challenging, is quite doable, but nothing is more frustrating than being killed because of a terribly coded enemy. I'm actually pretty upset that the shyguys made it into SMWCP, and I hate to break it to you rao, but you're going to deal with 'em again in world 7.

  • Wasn't there a level similar to this in one of the VIPs? Not the poison cloud one, but I THINK there was one where you had to hit switches to reset the time to 10 seconds or so. And there was also the one with the glowing background that makes you invincible whenever something is moving in it.

    And now this. All these levels are extremely unfair.
