But of course if people were to come to this park, and Central Park were to be left alone, then Central Park would end up just like Flushing Meadows. So really there's not much we can do about this once beautiful park. :(
I grew up in Jackson Heights when I was a kid. This compared to the Heights was like heaven. Now it is completely over run by gangs and other "fun" people to be around at night. It's beautiful at night, but in the day you can see the garbage and the trees that are rotting. (I know that this was shot during winter, that's why there are no leaves.) But at the night you are asking for a death warrant by walking around. Ever since NYC stopped funding this park things gradually became worse.
When Unisphere was built for the 1964 World's Fair, it was intended to take its place as one of the world's prime tourist attractions, on a par with the Eiffel Tower. Unfortunately they overlooked two points: 1) Flushing Meadows is an out-of-the-way location that few tourists would ever visit once the Fair had closed, and 2)unlike the Eiffel Tower, which you can ride or climb to the top, the Unisphere completely lacks interactivty. Thus, it remains a mostly forgotten curiosity.
I tackle the state of the park in my documentary, located on my channel. I like your commentary about this, it's very intuitive. It would be nice if they repaired and opened the saucers but they haven't got the budget.
I have seen a short promotional film by US Steel made at the time of the building of Unisphere, and it makes the Eiffel Tower connection clear. In fact the grandson of the original Eiffel designer helped to break ground at the Unisphere site. This was obvioulsy meant to be something of lasting importance.

Besides being "followed" one night while taking pictures of mosaics, why do you think you'll be mugged, etc, here?

Because it was all over the news at the time. People getting mugged and stabbed while walking through this park.

Even in 1964, the first time I looked at it I thought "OK...so what's the point?" It just sat there and did nothing constructive at all.

On par with the Eiffel Tower?? Someone was smoking something funny.

Sure, but it's not hard to imagine that if this were sitting in the middle of Central Park it would be a 'must' stop for tourists.

I suppose it is all about location. They have a mini one of these at Columbus Circle.

Glad to see the Unisphere is still standing. We have many fond memories of that fair.
