Seriously. This series really doesnt do well to show Japanese society or culture. There are broader cultural reasons for the temporary employment they talk about. Journeyman has a really bad way of supporting a narrative with hollow statements.
@mrjamesthegreatable When the documentary was made Japan was the 2nd largest economy, In 2010 was surpassed by China, leaving Japan the third place...
Journeyman pictures, like usual, has completely exaggerated the facts to support their narrative. If you want to know the reality of Japanese society, study Japanese sociology. Do not trust this junk.
So, you shouldn't build bridges because it will put ferries out of business?
So, they shouldn't have built the Pyramids?
Of course Japan lays many more times more concrete per square foot than other countries. Japan's population density is 10 times higher than the U.S.; 100 times higher than Canada's.
This series of videos is clearly aimed at damaging the image of Japan by investigative journalism or whatever you want to call it. I was born and raised on both sides of the Atlantic and I can clearly say we could all learn a lot from the Japanese. They have the best manners, food, cars, girls, robots, temples, gardens, language... you get the idea. There is a reason why they need to keep us gaijins out. They started to fail when they started to be like the West.
@linuxrules04 stop being so self hating. We aren't ''white devil gaijins'' like you seem to beleive. On another note, do you really think isolating themselves from the west is the thing they should do? We are talking about an island here, they sell products to the outside world with the materials bought from the outside. I guess we should all stop buying Japanesse cars, video games, cameras and whatever else they export. I bet that will fix their economic problems.Just think about what you wrote
This is one of a series of videos about Japan that seem to directly criticize the country, it's politics and economy. Makes me wonder to what extent this is true...
Bureaucracy has been so fucked up issue of Japan for a really long time.
The bureaucrats retire from their government positions and then get hired by companies that they used to oversee while they were in the office. Government can't stop offering the public works to these companies because those in charge at the government are looking forward to getting hired by these companies upon their retirement. Unless they BAN "Amakudari", wasting money on white elephants will never stop.
i seriously doubt that japan has more dept than the US. the US keeps sayin its only 11 trilli in the hole but if you use real data that hasnt been sugar coated to look good for the public its more like 65 trillion. and considering that most of the money owed to the asian countries (especially china) ....yeah japans dept is nothing compared to the US
@iTeaze888 Yeah, the US has major trouble with our debt, but the United Kingdom has exceeded our debt. Their debt per capita there is now higher. The US's debt is higher in numbers, because our economy is much larger.
Koizumi was somewhat considered as a handsome man in Japan it obviously helped during his elections and when he worked as PM. He was usually compared to Richard Gere :)
Probably he was considered atractive by young girls as by older women as well.
well, livng in a country whit shitty infrastructure, I ca say that having massive debt but good roads and stuff is waaayyyy better then not having both.
That's nonsense. Investment in infrastructure is only justified if that investment can be recouped through increased productivity.
Being in dept means having to pay interest. Paying interest means a lower standard of living. A low standard of living means not being able to afford the gas to put in your car to drive on your nice roads.
Another one-sided documentary. There's nothing wrong to control the shores and mountains to prevent massive erosion caused by constant rainfall. In fact, Japan's forests have never been "natural". They are actively controlled and maintained for centuries by humans, and lots of efforts of conservation are going on. The percentage of Japan's forest area is actually increasing (unlike other developed nations).
BTW, Japan's second biggest city is Yokohama, not Osaka. Please go check the facts first.
that is correct. but probably they were talking about osaka being the second biggest metropolitain area. with yokohama belonging to greater tokyo (or however it is called) megalopolis.
@yusukeshinyama The problem is that projects were created simply to create products and keep the flow of capital moving between government and favoured contractors. I conducted my post-grad work on infrastructure planning in Tohoku. It is shocking how lowland rivers had banks ripped out and concreted, with no evidence of any serious erosion, simply to meet economic not environmental ends. The US has the Military-Industrial Complex, Japan has the public project drain.
I just want to say I appreciate these worldly videos in English, but please provide subtitles so we can actually completely comprehend the message in the video.
Are you fucking kidding? Stupid anime fan boy. How about watching some other documentaries about Japan? 1million young Japanese are so afraid of their competitive and grim society that they refuse to leave their own apartments. Kids are being forced to go the school without wearing shirts and bullying is accepted and encouraged by the adults. Japan sucks in so many aspects. Ohhh they are fucking racists too, and as a foreigner you will never be 100% accepted as a part of their society.
Between the firebombing of Tokyo (which killed more than either nuclear weapon) and the bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, I think Japan has "burned in hell" enough, don't you? :)
"Kids are being forced to go the school without wearing shi"?? They are not forced. Parents want them to be stronger against diseases. This series of documentary is very bad and does not represent our country rightly.
It is just a cultural clash, a lot of things that asian countries do western countries cannot accept (not only the Asian countries but elsewhere as well), so u get ideas from the west thinking that the kids were forced not to wear a shirt. It is becoz the west cannot accept the fact that a child is not wearing a shirt, becoz in the west that idea is very strange to them, hence stating the fact that the children r been forced. Its just a cultural clash.
Not really, because they could demonstrate the Japanese reasoning for it. I do get a distinct feeling of bias while watching journeyman, but I don't understand why... what is their agenda? It doesn't take a lot to intrigue a westerner in another culture, so instead of this video saying "it's weird", they should say "they do this because they believe...". Some of us might still think it's weird, but at least we can make up our own mind that way.
@kusakabemanai I believe you are right my friend. TV always will show what people want to see. for example, many americans (also from other countries) actually think that mexicans ride donkeys. and we have no cars. i swear to my mothers grave a have never been even close to a donkey. in fact i've seen like 2 in my life. But i mean i know that there are people who ride donkeys, and what this shows do is to film those particular persons and say everyone is like that.
@GothicWiccan13 The point was that all this construction is unneeded and ultimately bad for the country..

kieronj 3 years ago
lets not forget that, the auto industry is falling, and it's car companies need financial help,
It's been in recession for 5 years or so in the 1990's, and is in another recession, since last year.
Also statistically, i believe japan's debt is about 170% of it's GDp, at $1.4trillion, also has the highest suicide rates in the world,
Still, personally, culturally, not financially, i think its a great country,
