I have to deal with this issue... My husband and I are stationed in Okinawa. All the American women give birth at this one hospital... and there's a lot of bad reviews on it online going against birth plans... doing unnecessary interventions, and doing things to the baby after it's born without the mother's position. I've been working my ass off to find a Japanese midwife on the Island before I give birth... and I need a translator to boot!! There needs to be more options to women!
Finally, I loved the comment at the end about the out comes for mothers, I know from personal experience that an EMPOWERED, SATISFIED & HEALTHY MUM is the MOST IMPORTANT OUTCOME in a birth as without that, a healthy baby, dad and family are 10 times harder to achieve and maintain.
Midwife run child birth classes are also needed to be mandatory and government funded so that woman can learn the basic physiology of birth and understand the irreversible risks and damaging implication of ALL medical or even some herbal interventions AND learn that there are CHEAPER, EASY TO LEARN, LOW RISK & MORE EFFECTIVE alternatives to use during labour (such as self hypnosis and birthing pools).
Women deserve to have access to different sources of information so that they can truly make informed decisions. I hope that this is a catalyst for the majority of healthy low risk births to be moved OUT of the hospital all together and into government funded and regulated midwife run birth centers, or most ideally people's own homes.
Continued .... However, I am slowly realising that the issues raised in those films and this one are not other people's problems but issues of international human rights.
I hope people do not see this film as just a debate on the merits of a certain birth location as I think it is more about educating people that unfortunately the perception of birth has been changed and the responsibility for decision making has been taken out of the individual woman's hands.
To echo all the other commenters, I am very excited to see this documentary and hopes it gets released internationally. As a young woman, from the UK , who has never been pregnant but is just beginning to think about TTC and how I will make the transition into motherhood; this is truly eye-opening! I have seen 'The Business of Being Born' and 'Pregnant In America' and felt glad to not be an American! ....
I gave birth in a hospital with drugs and Birth was the most amazing experience in my life and my best friend had her baby at home and is still getting over it ... yes I agree we should have a choice but home birth is not the be all and end all
Homebirth is not the be all and end all. What is is a woman's right to determine where, how and with whom she gives birth. My taxes paid for your hospital care and drugs and they pay for many thousands of unecessary caesareans and resultant morbidity (NICU,SCN,etc). I have had 8 homebirths with not one cent funded & since 2002 I have not had the protection of an insured midwife, something you did and I also paid for. Women's choices must be equal and their right to decide protected
WOW---I can't wait to see this! One of the best things I ever did was give birth to my second child at home in a kiddie pool....so gentle, so positive, and so empowering. I hope this awakens the desire in many more and changes the political climate that makes it so challenging to happen this way. Bless you guys!!
The movie looks great, very emotive. I will argue though that home birth is NOT about to become illegal. The regulation around home birth is changing but birthing at home will not become against the law. I support anything that gives women real choice around their birth and I believe we must raise awareness about the reality of birth choices but we must not mislead anyone by making dramatic statements like the opening statement on this trailer.
@samrouse00 The recent proposal if the legislate passes is that if people choose to have home births, you would be fined $7000 and the midwife would also be fined $3500. You can't say it will not become law as there are those who are pushing for it. Hopefully we pray it never does become law.
so true that everyone thinks we're crazy for having a home birth...I truly think the ones birthing in hospitals are more crazy...problem is woman are not thinking for themselves and just trusting what their Dr. tell them. We need to spread the word and empower woman everywhere.
good luck on your documentary..can't wait to see it!
i cannot wait to see this. when is it released? i hope it makes a real difference and gets to the politicians who are making decisions on our behalf of where we can birth, and i hope more women are convinced to take up this option as there are way too many experiences of birth trauma in the hospital system.
this documentary is the most amazing thing that you could do for Australian Families... the birth of a child such a powerful moment in family life, being dictated to by our 'health' system as to how our children (our countries future) enter this beautiful world is discusting... I hope that this documentary makes a difference!!! i certainly dont want MORE of my rights taken away from me...
Bawling my eyes out here! I'm 5 weeks preg (after nearly 3 years of trying for #2) and am planning a HB this time. I traveled to Canberra for the rally with my family last year. I attended the local protest earlier this year in support of the women in Ballarat. I made my submissions to Govt at every chance, yet here we are, waiting for other people to take away our full spectrum of choice unless we fit into a nice, neat box. I can't wait for this movie to come out! Time for positivity!
Thanks to those who have contributed their time, energy and expertise thus far. We appreciate you letting us into your lives and sharing your knowledge, expertise and experience. Gavin Banks (co-director)

I was at the canberra homebirth rally last year. I went on a convery with midwifery students, doula's, homebirth bubba's ,their mumma's and their pappa's and independant midwives. It was the best experience i've had. To be around knowledgeable, intelligent, smart women and men was something i am grateful to have been apart of. Made me think of my future midwifery practice in a totally different way!
I have tears rolling down my face watching. The part where the woman spoke about the fact that we don't lose too many babies but we lose relationships and mental health after traumatic births really hit home. My marriage is young but my relationship is not quite so. We have never had a trial to go thru as tough as the fall out from how our daughter was born. We are struggling but will survive. No thanks to our care providers, we struggle to heal from the breech of trust in so many ways.
Bring it on! So grateful that you are making this essential film.

It's so frustrating to me that people think they can outlaw home birth! That's ludicrous!
