why theres no videos from this amazing band in the early days!?!? From Hendrix there are a lot!!!! Its incredible,. eddy should deserve to get more videos in live action
Wow, Eddie sounds and acts a lot like Hendrix here. This is great. I'm not sure why nowadays he claims Jimi didn't influence him at all, this video proves that statement is total B.S.
I think it's a total crime that rock video footage has been around since the 50's, but we can't get ONE decent Van Halen show on video until 1982. The fact that this mammoth tour that put dozens of top name guitarists back in the woodshed is largely undocumented on film, is a crime.
I love the rawness of this- the violent feedback, the energy. The late 70s had some great guitar players (Roth, Schenker, Page, etc.) but Eddie is just the tops for me. Thanks for posting- awesome to see this.
In regards to Todd Rundgren...I saw those clips, I guess people are entitled to their own opinion. He's good, but does not come close to Eddie! I also doubt Todd could play Ed's "Spanish Fly Solo". I have to admit, this clip is not Eddie's best. For a great Eddie Solo without the tapping, search - Eddie Van Halen Solo 1976.
to all kids who were not present when ed hit the airwaves 30 years ago,-----all your you tubers, and herman li's or lu's, creeds or cruds, chemical this or that, taste of chaos, and all the rest owe ed abig thx for opening up the doors for lead guitarist in the rock arena, where do you think you got your chops from? a cracker jack box? most of it derived from the fingers of a man when you were not even born. all hail ed.
Rubbish! he's mainly just going up and down scales quickly or playing simple classical chord sequenses, not interesting music, no blues no stlye no interesting improvisation.
techicaly he did invent tapping people before him jst thourght hmm theres an easier way, but didnt really know wat they wer doin, jeff beck he did some years ago, but he didnt invent it. eddie van halen saw a vid sed hmm u can get fruther up hamer ons using ur other hand he did it, and he made it wat it was. he did invent it and made it officialy its the fact. if it wernt for him people woundntl be learning it
Eddie saw Jimmy Page do his multi-hammer-on-pull-off technique during the Heartbreaker solo sometime in the seventies. Eddie took that, and developed it until it became his trademark tapping technique.
Eddie was not the first though. In the seventies, Steve Hackett of Genesis, Ace Frehley of Kiss, and even Steve Hackett of Canned Heat did it in the sixties.
In 1978 i seen them at nassau coliseum,N.Y.L.I.,with black sabbath and van halen, blue them off the stage !Ididnt even no who halen wasback then!THATS because that was there first aulbum!!!andthere was a riot 4 people we killed staded to death1978,angels
Eddie is the best!! Eat your heart out Rolling Stone! BUT Jimmy Page is one of Eddie's inspirations, tapping wouldn't have happened without Jimmy. But Eddie is the BEST!!
What a rock god!! Oh and Randy Rhodes couldnt hold a match to him!!Zack Wylde is the best Ozzy has ever had.But they still dont touch Edward Frickin Van Halen.NOW BOW DOWN!!
stop talking about the rest, his ability and knowledge at that time of the guitar, amps and effects was gifted genius, he made his own sound, style and music and thats where the line is that the others cannot cross, yeah he may have had influences like clapton etc but thats all they influences when he was learning.
what a fucking legend, he came out and put all other guiatrists in history in the back row, this played today gets undeniable attention even by people who cant play guitar, but to have this perfected in 78....
Steve Hackett from Genesis did the two hand pull offs on Dancing with the Moonlit Knight off of Selling England by the Pound from '73. Cool video. Thanks for posting it.
Stevie was great, but innovative? He took Albert King, Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix licks and mixed it into his sound. That makes him a synthesisist, not an innovator.
Those were open string pull-offs in Heartbreaker. VH thought he could use his left hand index finger as a "moveable nut" and bring his right hand over to move the pull-offs (and hammer-ons) around.
Billy Gibbons was doing it in the early 70s (mostly bending a note with his left hand andtapping a single note with his right on the same string, like a root and a 6th). People like George Van Epps were doing it in the 40s and 50s.
you can see Dicky Betts of the Allman Brothers at Fillmore 1970 or so doing two-handed tapping, but very primitive style, none the less it was long before many others including Eddie. there were others before Dicky I'm sure, like Jeff Beck someone mentioned & before him too.
These stupid kids from this era. They dont seem to be able to grasp the fact that when Eddie came out in the late 70s, nobody had heard playing like his. There was no Becker, Malmsteen, Vai, or Satriani to blow our minds. So you jackasses that talk about better guitarists, sure there are. But if you rewind 30 years, you won't find anyone to match Eddie Van Halen.
Yeah, Ed have a rock & roll in his DNA... Soul and spirit... incredible as 30 years back Edward already it had evolved the sound and the electrical guitar.
@koru81 yes it's also important to note that even as technology has grown exponentially over the years his playing is still off the charts and unbeatable even when compared to the present. This shows that the gear doesn't make the player
elvis sucks idk why ppl say hes the king of rock n roll chuck berry was way b4 him hes the real king in my book anyways my dad just help build the library of congress so i hope to get to see some rare rock vids like this one :)
WAIT! I'm on your side on this. I pick Chuck over Elvis too, but the masses dictate the big picture. Chuck is a national treasure- sorry I missed that one.
Eddie Van Halen was 23 years old in the video. An inventor at such a youthful age. He is a National Treasure as much as Elvis, Neil Armstrong, and Bill Gates indeed.
I saw them open for Boston at the Boston Garden in 1978, Ed came out and did this and other stuff that TOTALLY blew everyone's minds. Needless to say, Boston was totally outclassed, outplayed, and after the 3rd or 4th song we wanted Van Halen back. Eddie is a god.
why cant people be this talented now it just seems people jsut play to make money the easiest way they can VH is so amazing i sometimes wish i lived during a time like the 80s to experience real talent songs in generalwere better before like 94 and then there not as complex and thought about just written out and sold to us
