  • I don't get people when they say "how do you contract your glute". All your doing is tensing it. The only real difference your probably going to notice is that your hip wont go as high because your ass isn't strong enough to make it really noticeable.

  • @ilovehim8ful None of us learned how to do this overnight. ;-)) Keep trying. Try sitting in a hard chair (like a folding chair) and squeezing your glutes (butt muscles) to raise you slightly on the chair. Now, keep your glutes contracted and relax your quad muscles (leg muscles) so that the glutes are the only thing contracted. When you can isolate the glutes only, start switching from right to left, increasing speed as you go. You'll get it. It just takes lots of practice!

  • Ok, so I know this sounds crazy but, about 2 months ago I couldn't do this. I gave up. I tried doing pilates it really strenghtens the but muscle and I tried it after a month of pilates and now I can do it! I was just weak muscle. Just look up pilates for the butt. :D I am happy to share my experience with anyone <3

  • it ok to teach the fondations of the dance i think that part of the dance is due to the rythme and to the lyrics of the arab song, so basically if you don't know arab language it will never be the same like the arab belly dancer , so i never meet or see an european woman dancer or whatever country who can rival with arab belly dancer. they have the groove ,feel the vibes it's in their blood, in their body.

    How does speaking Arabic make you a better dancer? Putting in tones of time and effort it was makes you a good dancer. Considering a TON of belly dancers don't even dance to Arabic music.

  • Hmmm... my belly dance instructor has been telling us to use our legs to do that.This way is so much easier. =)

  • @dreamXwithXyerXheart It's basically squeezing one butt cheek at a time.. lol.. So when you take a right step, squeeze the right butt cheek, and vise versa.. Hope that helps!

    Don't worry about it, I've been dancing for years and I still haven't figured it out. She's not raising her hip with her glute, she's using her knees. Contracting your glute makes it much sharper. You CAN do it with your glutes but it yields such a tinny movement. Considering she's such a wonderful dancer and teacher I wonder why she's trying to teach it this way to beginners.

  • @dreamXwithXyerXheart Tighten the right / left cheek in other words. I think it goes like this: when your right foot is in the air, you're moving the left hip...when your left foot is in the air you're moving your right hip. It's pretty hard. Imagine her turned around. Hope that helped!

  • there are two different styles...some can do it better with their knees but many bellydancers like Suhaila Salimpour do it by tightening the glutes back and forth they believe it makes a sharper looking movement but using the knees is still fine.

  • to make it easy, make sure your back is not curved. once your pelvis is blocked, it comes very naturally

  • Don't worry about moving your ass. Bend your knees a little itty bitty bit for tiny hip movements. Check out Neena and Veenas guide to belly dancing. I learned from them.

  • I agree that you should take a class to learn proper technique. A video is good for reinforcement, but if you don't know what the moves are to begin with, you will never figure it out. However, if you don't want to do it, I don't think telling your mum "it's hard", is the answer. You should be honest and say you're not interested. If there is something else you're interested in you could tell her.

  • Oh yes.  I can tell you that this is not as easy as she makes it look. The only thing that happens is my butt jiggles, by hips do not snap at all.

  • I cant do this.I cant move my hips without bending my knees.Plus i cant do it without moving my soldiers and They tell you to tuck in your stomach and keep your upper body relaxed but your lower body moving?? How do you do that?? Its kinda hard for me without moving my ass & soldiers.

  • I've read somewhere that moving the hip by contracting the glute will cause the knee to straighten. As long as you're contracting the glute and the knee is merely following along it's correct.

  • Maybe if you tried peeling your booty off the chair and actually attempted what the tutorial is trying to show you, you'd figure out what 'squeezing the booty' does.

    This looks more like tribal style. She's just showing you how to use more muscle control in hip lifts. As she says, there is more than one way to do this.

    I think this was a good, short video on isolation/movement of the hips (via booty).

    if you squeeze the behind as if holding something in between butt checks no movement as demonstrated above is possible

    it would make more sense that it is your booty that is doing the pushing of the hips and not that it is tensed up

  • Instead of trying to squeeze your glutes together, you're flexing one at a time with a little pop towards your hip. Up and out, to the side, not towards the other cheek, glute, whatever.

    Try that. I think you'll have better results.
