If little jimmey isn't allowed to play violent games, he's going to play those games with his friends, or get them somewhere else... I agree that parents have a responsability towards their children, but children are not innocent. They may not be as intelligent a most adults, but they can be just as evil. If he likes violent games because he's attracted to violence, and he likes to use violence in reality, it is not the parents fault per se, the kid is just violent
Bottom line is, people like to look for someone to blame so they don't have to take responsibility for their own failure. People aren't raising their children properly.
Its quite odd that after the very first GTA for playstation, and PC. Which must have been ages ago, about 1996 or so. That adults even now dont see that you can have a game thats rated 18. Really should only be for adults.
And like the ol' Alan Titchmarsh argument, that, that old bat saying "Oh its the interactivity of a game thats harmful". Its not harmful if when you see "Rated 18". And then, as a result don't play the game, because the BBFC rating is there for a reason.
I guess adults see games as a toy. This is because they never grew up around games therefore never saw it as it was meant to be. People use the phrase "Play games" which in a way makes the activity sound childish. I also learnt when I was younger if I said I had already played the game or that other people had it then my parents would buy me it. Though once I went into a game shop at the age of 13 and purchased GTA. Without them even asking my age. All I said was that it was for my brothers bday
I take it back, those that oppose video games have never taken or understood history, sociology, philosophy, or theology. Cautionary tales and real life have one thing in common, they can be very ugly, but if a child is not socialized to understand the MEANING behind that ugliness, they will miss the point and focus strictly on the visual aspects of the story. Also, a child with concerned parents who educates them about life might even handle a mature game better than an adult with no training.
Well said Julia. Society is always trying to blame video games, music and movies for societies failures and social ills. Middle class life and its social pecking order system, managed and created by the called middle class and the educated, reeks of violence, corruption and hypocrisy, but they need a scapegoat, they would never blame themselves, the drug trade, the arms industry and more. The arts has and will always be that scapegoat and the nutty religious will always ignore the truth.
As with everyone else here I agree with you 100%, Julia. It does seem that the blame gets put on 'violent video games' because of the convenience of the medium. I watched a film on gang violence recently that was actually shown in local schools and some of the footage was horrifying and involved real stabbings , beatings and shootings , this was real footage taken from CCTV cameras around the UK and it was a million times worse than any video game. Things like this are real, games are not.
