If Barry did not survive the Mansion Incident, that it would have even more ramifications that just his death, meaning that Jill would've died in RE3, seeing as the canon story states he saves Jill and Carlos, and Nicholai took what seemed to be their only way out of the soon-to-be annihilated city. In other words, without Barry, Jill would've been dead as well a few months later.

Actually, it's been confirmed by Capcom that the proper ending is all four survive the mansion: Rebecca, Barry, Chris and Jill. For some reason they left out Rebecca when you play as Jill and Barry when you play as Chris.

Barry can die in the Original game, but according to sources its just an optional ending, and the endings where Barry lives are supposedly classed as canon due to him helping Jill in Resident Evil 3 (Hes in the helicopter in one of the endings) and being in the time lines and official plot lines. It all depends on the options you pick in the game as to whether he dies or not. So he can die, but Capcom don't class it as canon.:)

Totally backing you up on that point. :)He doesn't actually die in the original Resident Evil according the a Resident Evil five time line and official plot lines, however, you CAN kill him in the Gamecube remake purely for shits and giggles I think. Their is a part where if you don't give him back his gun in the tomb he will get killed by Lisa Trevor which is classed as being a non-canon death. So you're correct, he officially doesn't die. :D

He didn't try kill her, though. That is where you meet Wesker and he unleashes the Tyrant in the remake. The gun pointed at her head was so that she wouldn't run or attack Wesker. He then leaves, only to come back after considering the options, and shoots Wesker. He then unleashes the Tyrant, so on and so forth...
