This is an example of the fundamental principal of a left-wing economy "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need". Also, the show flew in the face of FOX's right-wing "family-values" what with the legalised prostitution, sex outside of marriage, fair bit of anti-religion etc.

Part 1

That's kind of a stretch. I'd more associate the fact he returned the medicine with a gift economy than a left-wing economy. On top of that, the fact that the protagonists deal so heavily in the black and grey markets really remind me of counter-economics. Which is scene as economically right-wing. As for the "family values" thing, kind of. I wouldn't really call the show anti-religion. Some of it's characters are anti-religion, but religion isn't portrayed negatively.

Part 2

The movie was(for Mal at least) pretty pro-faith. Not necessarily religious faith, no, but faith in general. Mal was anti-religion during the series because he lost his religious faith during the Battle of Serenity. By the end of the film he gained a faith in individual liberty(or something of that nature). Overall the series is kind of ambivalent about religion.

Since Fox tends to be very pro-christian and they take their religion rather seriously, they don't usually allow stuff like that in their shows.
