The reason why everyone has (until recently) described them as right wing is simply because nationalism has always been equated with the right. But you would never find a mainstream right-wing party advocating the sort of highly controlled economic or civil liberty policies that the BNP supports.

Very right morrid. The BNP believes in a controlled economy, nationalised rail & social control (which would require an ID database of some kind). Thats not right wing - its far left. True they support full national health, which is Socialism. However, they would be more rigorous in the benefit system, advocating personal reasonability; they believe in "small government", family values and the Christian heritage of the British nation.. which all typical right wing beliefs. So the end of the day, they course of action are a mix of traditional left and right, the BNP refer to themselves as neither, they only identify themselves as nationalists.
