Thanks so much 4 providing this, truly a forgotten 70's gem but ALWAYS a C,S,N + (sometimes) Y classic. I have "heard" that Grahm did indeed write it in an airport to win a bet, it had a more darker underlying viewpoint of a guy who dies in a plane crash. "Traveling at twice the speed of sound it's easy to get burned..." Makes you think.
In April saw Crosby and Nash in Concord, NH and they did this song. Such a beautiful song and to hear two legends perform it again with such soul! You can purchase the digital download at their website.
This truly is a beautiful performance of this song by this incredible band. Probably the best live performance anybody has been able to record and then upload onto YouTube. Thank you, deadhead1065, for uploading this podcast so that all of us CSN&Y fans can enjoy the music as it was meant to be played & sung.
I photographed CSN&Y 42 years ago in 1969 when they sang Down By the River on The Music Scene for ABC TV. Have a look by Googling "cacheagency" Once you link to the site, click on Photographers and Collections. Then click on Jeff Allen. Hope you enjoy exploring the over 350 rock photographs from 1968-72 I shot , I'd love your feedback! One of my Pink Floyd photos from 1970 was in last September's issue of Rolling Stone magazine for the upcoming "Wall" article they did on Roger Waters.
I love the line "She helps me with my suitcase and stands before my eyes driving me to the airport and to the friendly skies" brilliant lyrics conveying images and emotion.
I actually heard Graham Nash tell the story of this song. It was on the "Rockline" show. Seems that he was buying some pot before he was going to head out of town on a airplane. His dealer said something like "OK Mr. Bigshot, since you have a few minutes to burn why don't we see if you can write a song during that time". And so he did.
This is the guitar I am looking for the one Stephen Stills is playing(my blond and black as I call it) I love the sweet face Stephen has while he plays this song. He is at his most handsome at this stage in his life. This is my favorite DVD as well I will wear it out if I am not careful Love You Stephen
They are great, each in his own right. Put them together and words can't discribe it. The Eagles got back together for the money. These guys get together for the love of music and each other.
@Dukegrievousangel Graham Nash always sings the high part. I'm 100% sure of this. He is the dominant vocal on this song and he is credited with writing it as Crosby says at the end. You can hear his voice when he sings by himself "I had to be alone" "and she was gone" That's why Crosby and Stills got Nash in the first place because they had always heard kudos of his high harmony.
@PullSomeTuber *S* Here Nashie sings lead - whenever he does, the Croz will occasionally sings higher than he does. But Graham's voice has the most consistently light, high quality of the three.
@NewHopeNashFan It's hard to hear the harmonies. In the studio version, you can hear a higher harmony singing along with Graham's lead. I never really listened to it like that before. Some times here I think I can hear a higher harmony than Graham's lead, but it's hard to hear it. I guess it's occasional like you said.
@PullSomeTuber Actually, Stephen sings a bunch of high parts in certain CSN songs (the falsetto in the "Tueeeesday morning" bit in "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" is Stephen, and the falsetto voice singing "I'm flying in Winchester Cathedral" in "Cathedral" is Stephen). The first part of the verse, it sounds like Graham's part is highest, but during the "when the shows were over/going through security" parts, I think Stephen hops up on top of him.
I made a folk song called "A Winter Evening's Tale" which is a year ender song that i wanna share to all folk and rock music lovers facing the year 2011. Check it out in the response of this awesome video or in my channel. Happy folky New Year Everyone!
Man, How I have always loved this song!! What a truly awesome band!! I grew up on this band and what an impact thier songs made on my life. This takes me back to my dad blasting this song among others on his backporch speakers in the summertime and me taking in all these songs in my heart and carrying them there forever!! What a time that was back then. Such a magic in the air you cant feel today and that is a shame. Missing those days forever!! I LOVE YOU POP!! RIP!! ♥
What a times, plenty of beauty, we all were harmony lovers, flowing notes and sounds.. This music have objective beauty , definitively !! Long life to Crosby, Stills & Nash !

@Bill5298 Not to take anything away from CSN because their harmonies kick ass... but I would like to say that the Eagles are very comparable. Although I enjoy listening to today's music, it just doesn't compare to the music of yesterday...
@Bill5298 Definitely can't duplicate CSN harmony. However, there were quite a few bands that had impeccable harmony from the 60's and 70's: Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Mamas and Papas to name a few. What a fantastic time period for music and enlightenment.
Oh Sissy-i can't believe you are gone-we were going to grow old together-be at peace and in no more pain my sweet angel sister-I will forever remember your contagious smile-I miss you SOOOOOOOO-your only sister and sibling-Butch(to you)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My fav CSN song. Neat story from Ronnie Wood's book- The Stones and CSN were sharing a studio in the 70's and Keith found out Stills picked up one of his guitars while Keith wasn't there. Keith made a sign and put it up in the studio reading "No Stephen Stills Allowed." Ronnie Wood asked him why he hated Stills so much and Keith replied "Cuz he doesn't do drugs right!"
whenever i heard this song.......it reminds me of my lost good friend back in the day....a very talented electric bass guitar player...he passed away..god rest his soul....
I LOVE watching this video....no one does harmony like these three...but to see them all together again, as tight as their harmonies, having so much fun, showing each other so much respect and genuine affection...the bonding & healing power of music personified.
these guys are so in sync and comfortable playing 2gether, they throw their own little licks in and the other members just look at each other with joy and amazement. Look at Stills and Nash's face between 1:00 and 1:08 laughing at Crosby's little lick. Someone bet Nash that he could not right a song b4 a flight landed. This was the result..!!!
@bookkeeper57 At the time Graham wrote this song, he had met, fallen in love with and married a wonderful young lady named Susan Sennett. They are incredibly happy together to this day, and have three children as cool as they are.
I love the look on Stephen,s face when he plays the opening bridge he makes a cute little face that makes me melt. I have this Dvd and I just might wear it out it is so special.

Those were the best days in high school. I saw them in concert at MSG 1977 too. Great memories and the best times of my life.
