  • @joker0097 Because your dumb lol

  • All I can say is "OUTSTANDING"

  • no..no its

    P

    E

    M or D

    A or S

which ever comes first in the order

  • omg, wow, I swear you are the best lol. I was so confused on what to do first in the parentheses. on top of that, i did the full problem inside the parentheses and moved on without retaining the parentheses like you did here with (5-18) on the second part. I just wanted to know how to do that simple part and surely, like always, i find it in your videos and no where else lol. ty you are awsome.

  • 6:04 because I want your brain to hurt!! lol

    Thanks Sal!

  • @mtnbikr4life i got nine :D

  • okay i need the answer to (9x7) + 3x8 x 4 x 36

  • 6÷2(1+2)=___ is?

I need to know the answer man... thanks! Im highly convinced its 1 because of 6÷2(3)=___

  • @mtnbikr4life I got 9.

  • What The Hell is PEMDAS (Besides the fact its the order of operations)

Thumbs up if you use BEDMAS!

    Brackets

    Exponents

    Division

    Multiplication

    Addition

    Subtraction

  • umm i dont think he is shore what he is even teaching

  • " I have a call but Im guna ignore it, your more important " heh =P this really helps me, sence I'm homeschooled, my online school always has links to these vids

  • youre amazing! thanks for helping me :D

  • Asian brides so sexy **busizz4me.info**

  • i thought you work from left to right. and if subtraction come before multiplication you do subtraction first then multiply......BECAUSE YOUR WORKING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT.. do you get what im sayin? IF I AM WRONG THEN MY FUCKN TEACHER IS LYING

  • its negativeee not minus lol

ur gettinq mie confused when u say that

  • you are great thanks for all your help

  • What I learnt i class was

    bedmas

    1brackets

    2expoinents

    3devision

    4multiplication

    5addition

    6 subtraction

  • thanks for doing my homework

  • I learned it as "PEDMAS", which, I suppose, is an initialism easier to remember.

  • I like how you ignored a call because we were more important :)

  • Somalia we use BODMAS

    B= bracket

    O=operation

    D=division

    M=multiplication

    A=addition

    S=subtraction

this way is well know. so many countries use it most Africa,Asia , and Europe.

  • We uses to say BODMAS rule in india..

  • my way in class cuz my teacher was maness he used

    gerald maness kicks ass

    G: grouping

    M: multiply

K: its just there to make sense

    A: adding

  • Great teaching as usual!

  • BODMAS

    brackets

    operation

    division

    multiplication

    addition

    subtraction

  • You said, "I have a call, oh no im going to ignore it, your more important" lmfao

  • Never had a problem with this. PEMDAS -- simple instructions telling you what steps to take. It really isn't that hard. Even writing PEMDAS on the side of your sheet to memorize it is going overboard

  • @themangodess ok smarty pants GTFO

  • @themangodess I don't believe you were being Mr. Smartypants but I think it is wrong for you to say, writing it on the side of your paper is going overboard.

Not everyone has a keen memory and I myself had to write it on the side of the

paper. Just as a reminder. No, PEMDAS isn't hard but not everyone always

    remembers. :)

  • Your style of teaching is the best, I've never understood expressions until now! Thanks!

  • I LOVE U KHAN, AND IMA MAN!!!

  • THANKS SAL!!!!...... from a Grade 6 Students' Mother!!!!

  • please don't rate it as bad.he is a phenomenal teacher

  • Excellent !!!

  • This guy seriously don't make sense!

    NO HELP AT ALL. >:|

  • This goes against all of my rules that I've been thought :S

    ALL OF THEM!

  • Comment removed

  • this man could just say "BODMAS" and kept quiet. :-)

  • wtf r u saying

  • I watched all of your Arithmetic videos and don't recall you teaching about negative numbers. Did I skip a video or something?

  • we learned this in normal 6th grade math

  • how did he get -13?

  • Think about it on a number line, if you start at 5 then move back 18 spaces, you will pass 0 and arrive at -13.

  • @hihamza1

    (5 - 3 x 6)

    You must multiply first

    so it becomes

    -3 x 6 = -18

now plug it in the parentheses

    (5 + -18) = -13

  • This guy is awsome. I have a so much better understanding of the order of operations than i ever had in my entire life.

  • For the -3.5 answer, how did he get that and not -6.2??

  • @ikebanaJc You understand the bit about how he got to -13 in the brackets right?

So after we've dealt with the brackets, we can remove the brackets and we're left with...

    3 plus -13 DividedBy 2

So according to the rules, we divide before addiing.

So -13 divided by 2 equals -6.5 then we add 3 to give us -3.5....

    geddit?

  • i have to give you points. it is great you are doing this :)

  • WOW! THat's all I have to say. It is absolutely amazing that you are doing this! I found out about this today, though I wish I would have found out about it weeks ago! I've been studying for a College Placement Exam, and went yesterday only to wind up in a remedial math class. I'm definitely going to refer to this videos as I go through that course! But WoW

  • im in remedial math in college ugh

  • Thanks this is a blessing to have this on the net!!!

  • The final example of + and - needs to be corrected. 1+2-3+5 ... Sal leaves the impression that it makes no difference what is done first, it does. EG 1+2=3 > 3-3=0 > 0+5=5 >> 1+2=3 > 3+5=8 > 3-8=-5. Sal has mixed + and - immediately after showing an example of pure multiplication.

  • this guy ignored his call, gotta love him

  • Its hard to apply this in calculus and trig you know

  • ohh!!! really thanks!!!! t-h-a-n-k-s!!!!!!!!

  • you sound like a cross between charles trippy and alphacat. love your videos. a really big help.

  • Wow...thank God for you...thanks to you...you're such a great help...thanks for sharing us you're knowledge in math...God bless you... : )

  • Does this apply to everyday life or only algebra?

Cause it's natural to go left->right in everyday situations.

  • I want to thank you because, i was failing math on this, so i wen't on youtube, then i found yours, so i did it. It was easy! Thank you so much! :)

  • Your videos are so helpful! This one is no different. I love it when you get the call, lol!

  • Thank you for doing this. My oldest is getting into Pre Algebra and i am terribly rusty. I will definitely use these vids to help when we get stuck. And to brush up on my skills.

  • ORDER OF OPERATIONS:

    1. Please- Parentheses

    2. Excuse- Exponents

    3. My- Multiplycation

    4. Dear- Division

    5. Aunt- Addition

    6. Sally- Subtraction

  • @PlayaGame101

I was about to post that, ... this is a common way of memorizing the order of operations

  • I'm going through all your pre-algebra math videos for my final exam. Your videos are great so far.

  • thanks man, this is awesome.

  • THANK YOU!! I need this!!!

  • im homeschooled *_* and yur a bunch of help because math is my main problem, even though im pretty good at it! i use Khan Academy, and this helps a bunch! thank you!!

  • Lol, I want your brain to hurt. Good one Sal. Beyond a doubt the Greatest Teacher on the planet! The world needs to pay homage to all your achievements.

  • a division sign? I thought that was a 12! Because your division sign looked like a 1 my answer for this equation was -177.

    Exponents: EXPONENTS

    Blah blah

  • THANK YOU !!! lol

but i figured that out by the end of it....

  • That term is only used in the UK.

  • i saw that in 2grade but you steel explain this very good im in collage now

  • Its called forgetting. Not everyone can remember every little thing they were taught.

  • And your parents let you get on youtube at your age? Amazing, thank God for CPS.

  • HEY every kid in school has a youtube acount you dummy!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks so much khanacademy for these videos. They help a lot even though I hate math.

  • Oh Thank you, u r so insightful. . .Im in college n im taking Math 100 or Math 110 (dont remember which one) and we are doing this right now. . .so thank u. . .

  • This guy sure loves to mumble

  • Sounds pretty clear to me, turn up your speakers, and turn down that rap music.

  • screw you

  • thankyou trying to get my G.E.D.

  • Khan, excellent instruction on OofO however you demonstrated the Commutative property of numbers at the end of this segment but the commutative property does not apply to division and subtraction as you indicated. ie. 12/3/1.5 is not equal to 3/1.5/12.

  • Easy to remember

    P.E.M.D.A.S

    1.Paranthesis

    2.Exponents

    3.Multiplication

    3.Division

    5.Addition

    5.Subtraction

this is how we learned in my class

  • I am so glad I found your videos I have m re-taking my ASVAB soon and I know my weak point is Math your videos makes it easy to understand. :)

  • Thanks for all the help. :) This helps many people(including homeschoolers),and math is just a subject you have to practice and see done, you can't learn it from a book. But one thing I remember( that should help) from my 7th grade math teacher. Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Parethases,Exponents,Multiplication/Division,Add and Subtract. Helps bunches.(:

  • But, why?

  • Hey bro I usually never comment on videos but just wanted to say thanks heaps your helping me pass Engineering!! I cant learn this stuff just by reading it aye.. Thanks Heaps!!!

  • a thought that tha last number was 12 so you have got 3:25 would have equal -153

  • I always was taught bodmas in my younger days. Brackets order multiplication divsion addition subtraction. I know brackets and parentheses are different but they have similar signs so I remembered it that way.

  • Thanx for the help great video

  • I find this surprisingly useful as a fundamental review even though I'm going through calculus right now! Great job!

  • this is called p.e.m.d.a.s

  • we r more important than ur call!! how cool is that??????

  • You sir, Are excellent.

  • When he mentions exercises and problem modules do you know where they are?

  • Try going to his website. That's as far as I know.

  • Trying to teach myself basics...as I'm going to go back to college come Spring & the field I've picked has several pre-reqs of math. This is the first vid I've come across by you I am going to utilize everything you've put out there. Thank you ~ =)

  • is this only used in algebra or could you do something like

    5+3x3-3 like that?

  • FOIL

  • nice

  • Oh my goodness thank you! I have a state test in a few days and I have to do practice problems, which has order of ops...which I kept getting mixed up on. But this helps so much! thank you!!!

  • its amazing how you kept going with all those videos! great job!!!

  • thank you!

  • just keep in mind: PEMDAS

  • This is the best Youtube set of Vids Ever!!

  • this is great, i had forgotten entirely about the order of operations. what grade level would this be? 8th?

  • My brother is going t start college soon. he is 28 and has been out of school fo 12 years. These reviews have really helped him with some of the stuff he didn't get. He will still have to start in development courses, but this will give hima leg up in those courses.

  • thanks! this vid helped. my math teacher really makes things harder to understand, no offense tho

  • im going to use your video for a school project i hope that is ok with you. and yes i will put where sight/the youtube sight i got this vid from thank ya

  • I'm not a young person, but I was in an unfortunate "accident" that put me in a coma and made me forget everything I'd known before.

I'm still having trouble understanding this. Since I've understood everything else you've taught, I believe I'm probably missing some info that's in another video.

I always make it to 7th grade Math, then I become lost. I hope that can be overcome and will keep trying.

Before the mishap, I was a Paramedic.

  • I hope your math has gotten better and you overcome your adversity.

  • Great video.

My only question is why are things done in this order? Why does say division have a sttronger value then subtraction? Can u help?

  • yes contact me at the bonscott101 page

  • omg i just love your videos i have a huge test on monday

  • Thank you!! it's great for my class...

but, at the end... you have a litle problem.

    Try: 4 / 2 x 5 it's 10 or 0.4

(sorry about my english, i speak spanish)

  • its 10 because if they both are not adding or subtracting and are multiplying or division you go in the order they are already in.

  • I wish you were my math teacher Thanks !

  • yeah i still dont get it but oh well ^_*

  • Better than all the other OOO videos on YouTube. VERY helpful. Thanks so much!

  • then you dumb as heck dumb o ass wipe
