  • Bbdim?

  • you rock!! thanks so much fot his video, that really helped me :)

  • How the hell is that a Dadd9?

  • DSUS 2 DSUS 2!!!! but otherwise, good video :)

  • only someone with a good ear and a love for music can understand this great video, this is a lot of education on music man, nice ! the sound is beautiful. you are a good teacher.cheers

  • Haha sounds like he got his hole on Halloween so he celebrated by playing a john Mayer song, thats how i do it too

  • Thanks for the lesson. Very good:)

  • who sex ? "-..

  • i'm subscribing :) thank you

  • THANK YOU.

  • u look like a fucking chicken

  • wtf

  • you explain horribly and it's very difficult to understand

  • Comment removed

  • Great insight, what kind of guitar is that?

  • What's up Carl?

  • This is a great tutorial. thanks for explaining the picking pattern. How do you make the pecussion sound of the thumb? also could you put up the PDF to download please?

  • Great explanation of the RH technique. Thanks!

FYI the 1st chord is a Dsus 2 not Dadd 9. The latter would have a 3rd. You might be able to call it that in the chorus because of the F# in the bass but I'd probably call it Dsus2/F#.

  • your are a goood teacher! thank's alot!

  • 0:02 is for the dislike bar

  • Awesome job dude! But you didn't show the chorus that well :/ i'm a bit confused on which chord I should play. But other then that, you were awesome! Keep up the good work! :D

  • Hi i'm john and i will teach you who's says the right way -.-

    Didn't understand shit

  • i want to play it well !!!!

  • You People have seen the film : Never back down? !

  • so after every 2 strings together it goes back to hitting 4th and 2nd strings even on the Em and other chords or does it change based on the low string on that chord?

  • you look talk and mannerism exactly like andrew macmahon from jack's mannequin/something corporate. sorry if millions have already told you that...good tutorial!

  • 54 persons was thinking that dislike button wos DOWLOAD BUTTON!

  • doesn't mayer use a bit more hammer ons than none at all?

  • Good lesson and I'm digging the comb over

  • is there any tutorial on youtube that actually covers the chorus properly :(

  • watch my cover! /watch?v=NS6dQtRwzjY

  • 542 ur face is great

  • dude put out the chords too! :D

  • haha "it'll bring some *clarity* " i like that :D

  • Very nice lesson, easy to understand and everything is covered nicely :)

  • xDD Jon McLennan, it's like The Beatles all over again. John McCartney Lennon

  • Awesome lesson. I'll definitely subscribe.

  • Dude you only really showed the picking, talk about the chord progression more !!

  • @Benjamin1168 listen to the damn song lol

  • @Benjamin1168 or you could listen to the song..

  • wtf.... wrong

  • we're just kids, but our cover of this song is pretty good i must say. check it out :)

  • is not a dadd9...but a dsus 2

  • @freakymalik True that!

  • Good tutorial, However I learnt the John Mayer technique without using the 3rd finger, just my thumb and pointer finger!

  • great tutorial dude. Dont worry about these a-holes that tell you otherwise. Keep the music flowing.

  • great tutorial, lol at 0:19

  • you are very good at guitar but terrible at teaching, im gonna have to say you dont have any students

  • this is not actually the right way

  • What d heck are u doing dude...im sorry to say this, but ur actually giving ur so called "student" a wrong technique...tsk3

  • Here's my version of the song

    /watch?v=FJikuh3Eihc&feature=channel_video_title

  • in the beginning is was like wtfffff, but after 10mins : Ow i get it... xd

thanks for the great lesson :D

  • in the beginning is was like wtfffff, but after 10mins : Ow i get it... xd

  • Your guitar sounds like a banjo.

  • I'm sorry to be so negative, but my patience with this specific issue is exhausted. How blind, deaf, and musically retarded do you have to be to teach the strumming method this way? Watch JM play live and listen to him. He creates the percussion by slapping with his thumb exactly as he flicks down with his finger.

It baffles me that this technique is totally skipped over by lazy players and especially by someone like this guy who claims to have "students". I hope he's not charging for lessons

  • Before the video starts, press 4, 8, or 9 to make your own three note song!

  • you clearly have been playing acoustic for a while but you technique is wrong on so many levels.

  • this is the kind of guy you can slap super hard in the face and the smile will still be there. (Not bad meant)

  • keep pressing 5.... SAUSAGE

  • hmm.. Im playing metal and i am fucking crazy on shreds, sweeps and stuff. But this is fucking killing me, i cant get that sound of yours, this song is awsome! and you are doing itv ery good, thx for the lesson i will keep on practice

  • @puttesnutte208 playing shreds and finger picking acoustic are two totally different planets. Its almost like learning a new instrument

  • @flipski909 idd!

  • thank you so much

but is the bridge part same??

  • once you start gettin hip to that...

  • worst tutorial ever !

  • worst tutorial ever !

  • cheese dick!

  • nice to see someone getting it right, thanks for the clip, great job!!

  • pause on 4:34

  • that 7 step pattern you've outlined is not correct... he botches it when he slows it up, even though he plays it correctly in-time (it's 5 steps)

    1) pinch (4 & 3 strings)

    2) flick down

    3) flick up

    4) thumb hitting D (4 string)

    5) flick down through (starting with 3rs string)

it's a lot simpler than he is making it when he is teaching it slowly -- he's adding in note strikes that are actually not there in the "in-time" progression and that's why it sounds wrong even when he slows it up.

  • you are soo cool!:)

  • Wow, that strumming rhythm is tough. Thanks for the lesson!

  • Play some Megadeth and I'll take you serious.

  • @FollowTheLink looooooooooooool

  • @FollowTheLink yeh and any real musican will just laugh....

  • are you sure thats not the snare and not him using his nails? cuz after listening to you play it and the actual version, the way you play it just doesn't flow as well.

  • that is not even the right way. u seem too full of yourself.

  • that is not even the right way. u seem too full of you

  • hey man thank you so much, is a good lesson

  • Helpful tutorial, but after seeing some John Mayer shows, I can tell you something for shure: it's NOT the right way! Sounds very good too, but definitly NOT the right way.

  • press 5:41 reapeatedly

  • I really want to thank you. Your a great teacher and ive been playing guitar by ear for about 2 years now and ive never taken the time to practice these kind of things and now i did and it feels so wonderful once you get it!

  • Hi i'm John, and i wear a t-shirt with Carl on it

  • recording with a mac?

  • @V0odoChhi1d

sorry for correcting you, cause I think 5) must be Up with the 1st finger on the 3rd string.

    Isn't it????

  • 1) Two strings together

    2) Nail down

    3) Skin up

    4) Just thumb (on D string)

    5) Just 3rd finger (on 2nd string)

    6) Nail down

    7) Skin up

  • @V0odoChi1d When do you switch chords? Just after 7?

  • Thanks for the video you are a good teacher with great tips on the slap pick. However, It doesn't help unless you explain how to manage the chord changes. Dsus, G, and then I'm lost.

  • u are a good teacher

  • Wish i could play as well as you :(

  • like the way it says 'the right way' and its wrong haha

  • great lesson

  • it's like Paul McCartneys picking style

  • Do you work at GC?

  • Hey, great name and great lesson! Don't listen to all these poser comments - the lesson was perfect and with your help I was able to learn the song perfectly in 20min - no tab needed. For those curious or confused about the chorus part just look up the chords on ultimate guitar.

  • i feel like the pattern youre teaching doesnt fit together when you try and play it fast right after each other, am i doing something wrong? ive tried to start off slow and then speed up but it sounds nothing like youre fast version there

  • @tres27 it doesnt, i cant get the rhythm either, after the second hit with the thumb it all goes down :S

  • what chords are in ''b'' i only got the G, the D like and the A, and the last part whitch u explained.

  • Hi. Nice played! One question: Where did you buy that t-shirt? Awsome :P

  • AWESOME

  • You talk too much... But I learned a lot from you :)

  • nice teachin m8 :D

ty really helped me alot :)

  • 4:17 and then we go to CHEE??

  • do you play the root of the chord on every new chord for the baseline?

  • your an amazing teacher!!!

  • Such a beautiful guitar song.

  • lol my nail polish chipped. great video anyway! :D

  • TY this is the best who says tutorial ever!

  • fucking awesome

  • thank you! :)

  • i dont get how to use that method on different chords. Help anyone? btw great lesson :)

  • Great tutorial!

I just have one question. You use the 3rd finger with your 1st (thumb) for the pick but when you play with the nail you use the 2nd finger?

  • thank you so much, that was really helpful ! :)

  • hey dude, thankyou much!

what is that your acoustic guitar? and what strings are you using?

    thankyou again!! cheers

  • please do a stop this train tutorial

  • Thanx! ...by the way, you need some codeine syrup!

  • Dude ure on a good way but I think this isn't the right way. The percussive sound John plays comes from a slap with the thumb on the bass strings. Also he plays only one of the high strings when he hits with his nail. Listen to the record to me it is very obvious.

  • Thank you. so much....

  • he looks like a rapist 5:41

  • it's ok..not too great..although i personally feel that the thumb picking technique applied by you does not give the right kind of sound...sounds like the strumming is accidental or smthin...john plays it clean...

  • pause on 5:41

    and 5:34

  • @gvl123456 why?

  • @totallyawesomesox face expressions

  • pause on 5:41

  • pause on 5:41

  • If your name is John McLennon why does your t-shirt say Carl?!!?!?!?!

  • awesome clip

  • Good job!!

  • your only suppose to use your index finger and your thumb

  • thank u 4 this ! :))

  • This video is awesome, I hope to see many more guitar tutorials from you.

  • wow...great job...been looking for someone to break this down for me the right way for a while. way easier than i thought. Just gotta jam on it slow for a while.

    thanks!

  • Best lesson out there. Thanks!

  • goofy ass mofo, it's like he hits LSD every time a string plucks

  • I like it, but towards the end it looks as if you switch up the pciking pattern, i got confused then. But i go the first pattern with th dsus2 down.

  • dude ...its awesome :)

  • Awesome tutorial, thanks huge!

  • This is exactly the way he plays, very impressed by your skills as a guitarist and a teacher. Very well done.

  • what kind of guitar d o u use??

  • JM uses his thumb and pointerfinger for who says. And as mentioned the first chord is a Dsus2. Nice tutorial though!

  • You are the best. Thanx man, now i can play this song!

  • prob the best tutorial, but still not a huge fan of the way you taught it tho.

  • wow! love the archtop in the background!

  • @MrWhitebuffalo17 o LOL i couldn't concentrate on the vid after this ahahaha

  • Thank you so much! ^^

  • thanks man you are awesome

  • /cough

  • The first chord is not a Dadd9. It would be a Dsus2 since there is no 3. step in the chord.

  • lool u make sum funny faces.thanks for the vid btw helped me alot

  • ey! hi from Madrid(Spain). I love your way to explain the song! very good rhythm you in the right hand. you got myspace? Cheers man!

  • Who's CARL?

  • that's actually a Dsus2 played from the 4th string up the the 1st string: 0-2-3-0

Dadd9 is when you've got the 1,3, & 5 tones in the chord. the tones as played at 1-5-1-2, making it a Dsus2.

  • it's funny how u move ur head !!

    haha

  • nice martin 000-28 i have the same one and i love it

  • Thanks for sharing!!! :-)

  • i was so sure your name would be carl :D.

    nice lesson thanks

  • Great tutorial ! Even better that you have a good attitude! unlike some other people on the tube!

  • That actually wasn't the right way but still good

  • @dayvid4 i think i was the right right. it just sounds diff to john mayers cos john plays some real quiet notes

  • I keep flicking my finger nail on the edge of the sound box haha

  • I hate learning stuff , but it worth the time once you get it

  • Great video, although, John Mayer doesn't use this technique in Stop This Train.

In Stop This Train, he uses the same technique as he does in Heart Of Life. This involved plucking the bass note, and then slapping that string after. At the same time, he is playing a melody over the top.

I've never seen him play this song, so you may well be right, he may use this technique in this song.

I'm not saying this is wrong, because it does sound accurate. But, I don't think John would play it this way.

  • OMG THAT IS AMAZING

  • It's definately the best torturial on the strumming part of this song...

Still it's pretty hard to follow sometimes, suppose i'll keep trying :)

  • what strings are you plucking with all the chords after the D?

  • i think you are a great teacher! thanks. :)
