I always liked elixer strings myself. BUT they dont mix with a D28. I was sceptical of other opinions that they kill tone but it was true on my D28 too. Still sounded good but robbed volume and overtone. A New martin is like a green sapling too. Takes about 6 months to settle in and start to develop its voice. Bought a new one in june 2011 and its quickly becoming a banjo killer!
@AK47cowboy on that martin the elixir strings had the most tone and volume, i tried about 10 or more sets of strings and hated them all except for the elixir strings. i was never happy with the way that martin sounded, i ended up selling it,
thanks for the comment. glad yours is working out for you.
@peterpulpitpounder olympus LS 20M video camera that has two built in condenser microphones, its a video camera made for live music.
when played back on my stereo it does not sound any more boomy than the real things do, my taylor has lots of low end bass on the low E strong and the martin has lots of low end midrange what i hear is very close to what they really sound like, the martin sounds much better these days, it was brand new and its had more time to break in.
I have a nice AT phantom powered mic, and the Taylor 310ce records nicely. My problem with the guitar is that I feel it just doesn't sound full enough for my tastes, and, in fact, the recording of your Taylor 310ce actually sounds pretty rich. I used my Taylor at church last night, and after playing 30 minutes worth of contemporary Christian songs, etc., I felt frustrated with it. I guess I'm used to more of a Martin kind of sound, and have not come to realize this.
@peterpulpitpounder i really like my Taylor better than i like the martin... i put a bone saddle on the Taylor but put the stock one back on, i got a Taylor bone saddle and the strings ate into it after a few days, i heard they were junk and i guess they are. i have never tried any other strings on my Taylor, the way it sounds with the elixirs on it does it for me. i tried different strings on the martin and i think i like the elixir strings best on it as well.
Well, let me know if you know anyone interested in a few month old Taylor 310ce. Maybe I'll regret getting rid of it in the future, if the thing starts to open up a bit, etc., but right now it's just too thin and fragile sounding to my ears. Thanks for the input.
@peterpulpitpounder are you a lefty?? there are several other things that i need to be spending my money on right now any ways, got to get one of my other toys going and my car sucks, i just sold that martin and i might try to get rid of my egnator guitar amp, i never touch my electric guitar but i am keeping the electric for a back up if something were to happen to my Taylor and it was out of commission for a while.
1300-1400 would probably be my guess for a used one that new if its still in really good shape,
check out the acoustic guitar forum, you can sell stuff on there, i think you need to donate a few bucks to them before you can list stuff for sale but you would be better off than paying all the ebay feels and the pay pal fees going that rout.. i am not sure how much you halve to donate but i dont think it was much,,
Very interesting video and responses. I bought a Taylor 310ce a few months back, and I"m having a really hard time "warmin up" to it. I typically play at church, during youth group, leading in choruses, etc., and it just doesn't sound very warm nor project very well, even compared to my vintage but laminated Yamaha fg-335. I hope it opens up at some point, as people say.
@TOPOFFMAN it's funny but people on the guitar forums all liked the taylor better on the other clips i recorded and did not way what guitar was what. at that time i also thought the taylor sounded better, but the martin was new and needed to break in a little, now the martin is the champ in my opinion. i should make a new video of the 2 guitars now that the martin has started to sound really good.
I hear ya bro, what I mean is that's how you learn the notes and how chords are built, the circle of 5th's is just the 5th note of the last scale. they usually start with c because c is the only scale that don't have any sharps or flats it's just c,d,e,f,g,a,b,c . so the next scale is g cause that's the 5th note of the c scale. so circling to the right the 5th's are c,g,d,a,e,b,which is also Cb (flat) since it's a half step.... you can find free lessions on-line that explain things. worth doing.
Dan, I'm going to tell you what I wish someone had told me a long time ago. If you want to improve your playing, get and learn the major scales and play them everyday. Also get a circle of 5ths and play the scales around the circle of 5ths. sounds boring but I promise eventually you'll thank me. It's the best way hands down to learn the neck and chord structure. brother in music ...tnpicker. I promise you'll be a bad ass flat picker.
@tnpicker1 yeah, i cant even tell you what all of the notes are on the first 3 frets, lots of punk rock so i was playing nothing but cheater barre chords for years and years. for now i am working in some scales, finger speed and learning the notes on the fret board. i dont quite understand the circle of 5ths. i know how to find out what note is the 1st, 2nd and so on of teh key i am playign in but not sure how you apply it. but i am starting to learn that stuff.
Martin sounds way fuller. More bottom end. Taylor sounded a little tinny to my ears. Are you using .013-56 medium strings?

What kind of mic are you using, and does it make the Taylor and Martin sound more boomy than they really are?

My Taylor 310ce also sounds a bit subdued, and I've tried all kinds of strings, including a new bone saddle from Bob Colosi.

Righty. Paid 1,500 for it. I wonder how much I'll be able to get back, although it's only a few months old.

@peterpulpitpounder well the average going price is around 1600 or so.

The Taylor sounds too thin. The Martin wins.
