@delauge I believe the character of Manto the Fairy was conceived as a genderless, preternatural creature who could assume the appearance of a man or woman. Of course, during the 18th century, women were not allowed to perform on stage so the high voices were sung by children, falsettists, castratti or the occasional (rare) countertenor or male alto.
