  • Counter point - all feature contrapuntal themes with different lyrics to the different melodies.

In wiki they have this song. This only indian song comes under this category.

  • Raja at hissuper duper best!!

  • brings back a lot of feel and memorys........thanks

  • its really blended scotch ...

  • true

  • where did russel come here out of nowhere?

  • Russel Peters was not born in USA, he's born in Ontario, Canada. His parents migrated to Canada from India. He's one funny dude though.

  • @fzavier

    What happened to u?

  • Words of John Rahn:

It is hard to write a beautiful song. It is harder to write several individually beautiful songs that, when sung simultaneously, sound as a more beautiful polyphonic whole. The internal structures that create each of the voices separately must contribute to the emergent structure of the polyphony, which in turn must reinforce and comment on the structures of the individual voices. The way that is accomplished in detail is...'counterpoint'.

Can there be a better example?

  • This song (only Indian song) is given as a example for the usage of counterpoint in popular music in wikipedia. Read "counterpoint" in wikipedia. I hope the audio quality is a little better. Anyone uninitiated to IR's music wont be able to appreciate the richness in the music of this song.

  • In the 80+ years of indian cinema, has anyone even attempted counterpoint like this in any of the 1000s of songs? what about non-movie music?

  • I wish IR would re-record this song with newer instruments and technology but with the same vocals.

  • anyone have ever heard fast melody???.......this one of fast melody created by the maestro weaved with excellent violin and flute interventions.....really wonderfulllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • what a nice song ? Thank god for the creation of ilayaraja

  • Dik head its russell peters........

kolly n bolly wood for ever,, forget that candanian comedian....

  • Russel Peters is a fuckin dick head. He wud sell his mom if someone likes her.

He is an ABCD - American Born Confused Desi!!

  • @arvindan1983 Russel Peters is a Canadian of Indian origin. He is not an American born.

  • @vathumuttai I think Canada is in America, isnt it? Why do ppl always think of USA as america???

  • @arvindan1983 I do not see any sense in arguing with you. Bye!

  • @vathumuttai Russell peters was born in Brampton, Ontario, Canada...

So you are right you cant argue with me when your facts are wrong

  • @vathumuttai Hello, your answer made me to laugh like anything. Thanks

  • @arvindan1983 You are a bit wrong. Canada is part of North American continent, not part of USA. When we say America usually no one would mean North American continent, rather it's meant USA

  • @arvindan1983

Hello Dont get confused in airport. If not instead of toronto, will reach florida.

  • Awesome song. Raaja went operatic in this one.

    Fantastic counterpoint demonstration.

  • This tune, after 20 odd years is so fresh and invigorating! it is snappy, upbeat, and romantic. i am not aware of any other Indian composer who has used counterpoint so well! Long Live Isaignani and bless us with more of your out-of-the-world music.

  • This man never tires of delivering knockout preludes and interludes and this is certainly amongst the best.

    Andrum,indrum,endrendrum Raja Raja thaan!!!

  • beautiful haunting melody and gorgeous harmony on the part of the vocals. Ilayaraja was waaaaaay ahead of his time. Kudos!

  • pagal nilavu...maniratnam's first movie in Tamil

  • poongatre?? wat movie is dis song from..PLZ HELPPPPPPPP!!!

  • u mean this song??

  • no..i mean a song with the lyric "poongatre.."

  • pagalil oru iravu

  • If the song you are asking about goes like this : "Poongatre, idhu podhum en udal thaangaadhe" sung by IR, then that song is from the movie "Padichcha Pulla" - I think an old useless movie by Arjun. There is also a Mano Chitra duet version of the same song.

  • Raja sir's voice is great.. Magnetic effect..!!

  • try this song its very rare ,Makam karukkuthu ,sinna puraaonru look on my playlist under tamil .if you liked this you will like that too

  • Who other Isaignani can ever compose such tunes? What will be the music world like after his period? The term melody will slowly erased from the dictionaires.. Long live Ilayaraja. -- challengeramba

  • one of the best song written(not lyrics) and composed by IR !

  • Ma Fav Song Ever :)

  • one of the classic gems in Raja' countless hits.....no other duet has male and female voice so well intertwined and blended.

  • isaiyin guruve.. neengal engal idhayathil vaazhgireergal... idhu "OSCAR" virudhai vidavum periyadhu.. azhive illadha Isai..

  • Excellent composing by Raja. Thanks for posting

  • prelude is enough to describe this timeless masterpiece

Maniratnam take on cinematography for romantic songs should be commended here!!!

  • The Raga, Music and singer...Its blended so well. Hearing a good music itself is a Gift. Thank U Raja!...Thank U for uploading.

  • could not agree more...brilliant

  • brilliant!! my cheeks are radiating with joy when i hear these little beauties!

  • This is the best song of raja sir..voice of Janaki,raja,violin--great..

  • u know wats amazin abt this song ? while one singer is singing a verse, u hear the other singer is humming...............its blended so well, i just love it, i'm sure u do too :)

  • thats right, its called a counterpoint. Raja is the only composer who has used this technique in many songs in different varieties.

  • அதுதான் இளையராஜா !!

  • @sekarva That is technically called as "counter point".... and Ilayaraja is one of the very very few persons in Indian music to apply that technique, that too in early 80's.. Try searching for "counter-point" in Wikipedia and you will find this "poomaalaye" to be the ONLY INDIAN song listed there as an example.... Raja RAJA dhaan....

  • @sekarva That is called counterpoint in western music. there is few song examples for counter point. this song also one of that. can check wiki.

  • @sekarva

    That is Raja,

he did the same in "Anandha thagam" song from paneer pushpangal.

  • @sekarva FYI, here IR used singers to overlap. More to his skills, jsz hear the song ''Naan paadum mounga raagam'' from Idhaya koil where he overlaps one instument with the other sooo neatly that he only can do. A real king of orchestration and composition

  • @sekarva its called counterpoints and Raja sir is the master in using this technique in various ways

  • from the singing to the instruments n lyrics, there is no other that can be compared to this track, amazing composition by Raaja sir

  • lifetime the best song!

  • Simply Superb

  • such a touching song by raja...

  • Raja.. the best forever!

  • Raja for life

  • I luv this song

  • its so nice to know that so many people share the same feeling towards life and music and ilaiyaraja. Once i hear this song, i feel elated and humbled immediately when i consider what a simple man this ilaiyaraja is and yet what mind blowing and heart rending melodies he can give us. Ya, its true, what an earlier comment stated. One can really feel God when one listens to this song. Wonder whether Ilaiyaraja realized it when he composed this, but i, or we do!!!

  • They Say God cannot come by himself to help you in need, instead he reaches out to you through some chosen people. The man he chose to heal me was Ilayaraja. He motivates me when i am demotivated, he energizes me when i am tired, he shows me the light of life when I am lost ! Illayaraja is the closest i have been to God !!

  • That description was the closest to what I felt about Ilayaraja.Words do cannot come when I need it and thus he chooses some people to express the unexpressible like you how you did now in an honst manner and reveals my feelings. And with these words, maybe feelings look diluted on my side!

  • This is onw of the best music of Illayaraja, The Great. If you notice the speed of the song and how the flow is taken from Bongos to Tabela and back. Superb!!!!!!!

  • In one word awesome!!!!
