Okay, first of all, this guy's not a scholar. They shouldn't mention his films--2012, jeez-- because that doesn't help his credibility either. A few things-- Shakespeare was educated. He didn't become popular until the 19th century and in his day, he was just another writer. He collaborated with other writers. There's more but it doesn't matter. The movie was stupid and insulting to a legend, end of story.
7. Not big at all! HE RETIRED. Not everyone works all their life. Did JK ROWLING not write harry potter because she's not writing at the moment.
8. He read. Oxford hadn't been to Italy either.
9. Even if Shakespeare didn’t write Shakespeare, by the time the monument was built (sometime between Shakespeare’s death in 1616 and the publication of the First Folio in 1623), Shakespeare was quite widely known for writing Shakespeare.
Honestly, I think this is a very clever thing to do and I don't know why he gets to slammed for the movie. I loved it. The actors, costumes, everything.... just a really smart, well done movie. And just because he usually brings the world down doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to do something else.
@engliscwarrior I don't think he knows how this works. He had the burden of proof to prove Shakespeare was NOT the author. Nobody has to prove Shakespeare wrote his own plays.
10. intellectual property was not a booming business back then. What use would his wife have for his plays? The bed was more practical then a bundle of papers.
8. Has Aaron Sorkin ever worked inside the White House? Has he ever briefed the president? How are the scripts for the show The White House so accurate?
7. there are prolific musicians who write constantly and endlessly for the first half of their careers. Then they stop. Does the fact that they longer write songs diminish the achievements of their previous songs? No
5. so if he did not write a sonnet or poem about a full moon or beautiful sunset/sunrise that means he is an alien not from this planet? Well by your logic, if he did not write a sonnet or poem about a sunset that means he never personally experienced them which means he is an alien.
4. penmanship equals composition? There are people who can write beautiful calligraphy and never written a poem or short story.
My doctor has bad handwriting...that means he could not possibility be a real doctor because a real doctor would have studied all the drug names in medical school and have no problem writing them clearly and legible.
3. why are non celebrities so obsessed with real celebrities? Why are "regular" people so obsessed with the Royal Family? He was a commoner and was obsessed with the ways the Royal Court worked. I'm not in the NFL but I know almost everything about it. Does my knowledge of the NFL somehow mean I'm a secret insider? Hardly a strike against Shakespeare
2. so what? The ability to read and write was a luxury. His whole family was illiterate. There are musical genius and composers that come from families with absolutely no history of music in their background.. Why? Not all musicians children are trained musicians. Don't they want their children to enjoy the composition of their music? So what.
1. so what? A dentist has two cars. A formula 1 racing champion has two cars. That means if you have two cars you are a dentist and not a racing champion....Nothing in his handwriting...which means he is could not have possibility written the plays? What?!?!?
I'd have an easier time respecting this theory, if you didn't keep using phrases like 'Check this out' and 'He must have watched the travel channel a lot' ... and if there wasn't a cartoon bird giving a statue mouth to mouth. You're better than this ... right?
I have never met a person who defends to orthodox Stratfordian position who has actually read any of the detailed scholarship done on this issue - and this blog once again demonstrates the truth of this. Petulant abuse is not adult debate. Like every member of that orthodoxy I once shared this appraoch but then had the maturity to read some of the key heretical works: Ogburn, Price, Anderson, Beauclerk, Chiljin to name the best. Reading them one sees how academe has backed itself into a corner
@cellis5384 "Adult debate" is not possible with an anti-Stratfordian. If you want to read something worth reading on this question, try Bill Bryson or better yet, James Shapiro. The latter especially blows this whole ridiculous argument right out of the water.
You dumbass goofs. Don't you realize this video isn't just an explanitory case against Shakespear's fraudulent playwrites? It's a big metaphor. All of you defending Shakespear, even though such appalling evidence is against him, are the pigeons trying to hold up is statue, or his image. You're letting your devotion and admiration cloud your judgement and inner intuition.
Been studying this for years and I've come to one conclusion: the whole anti-Stratfordian thing is BS. The movie's not bad as a piece of mindless entertainment, but that's all it is.
Absolutely Right....now find out who Shakespeare REALLY was--read "The Masque of William Shakespeare" on Kindle. All other reader formats can be found at Smashwords.
I think its pretty damn hilarious that Roland Emmerich created a conspiracy theory about a historical playwright. All ten reasons are full of holes and tell you nothing.
His theories make sense. Of course the only way to know for sure is to live in Shakespeare's time and to personally know Shakespeare himself but we can't time travel yet. Doesn't really matter to me anyway because I was never hugely into Shakespeare's work. Either way, it never hurts to have an open mind.
@Stuartsaves That's your opinion and you do have the right to it but at the same time, Roland also has the right to his. Even if they do sound silly and I don't believe that they do, you can't dismiss the logic behind them and if you do, that's fine. Either way, we can agree to disagree.
@SpaceAgeTubeDude Actually, I can dismiss the logic behind them if that logic is flawed. Stating, for example, that his daughters couldn't read as evidence he didn't write his plays is pretty stupid. The literacy rate for England at the time was somewhere near 30%, so most people couldn't read. Also his comment about the Stratford grammar school makes no sense, either. There are no records of any students there before the year 1700, nearly 100 years after Shakepeare's death.
@SpaceAgeTubeDude If you think these are sound arguments then why shouldn't I point out to you why they're wrong? Do you not care that they have serious flaws?
@Stuartsaves No not really. I was never that big on Shakespear. I just happen come across this video by accident and thought Roland made some interesting theories if you must know. Whatever really did happen in those days doesn't matter to me one bit. Even if it did, none of us can know for sure what happened back then because we didn't live in those days. We only know what we read. So if you want to debate it, debate it with Roland.
This guy. I swear to God this is the most arrogant thing... half the video is a lame animation of some cathartic massacre of a dead guy. Maybe he should make the next pulp-fiction disaster movie about the disaster of his reasoning.

Really not that unusual that his daughters were illiterate, the inherent misogyny of the period made female education something not to be valued, indeed a too clever woman was seen as an unattractive marriage prospect, liable to question her husband's dominance. It would have been more unusual if his SON had been illiterate.
People have already debunked all of the B.S. this guy spewed. Also don't question his vocabulary when he is the first recorded use of hundreds of words.

@abarrathemaster You are possibly the most illiterate, unintelligent, and stubborn person I have ever seen. 2012 was a horrible movie, in the sense of dialogue, shooting, directing, acting, and idea. 300 was 300 times better in every single aspect. You can't even spell or use correct grammar. Here's a few things you might want to know: Not everyone who runs the US is Jewish, Shakespeare's name was Shakespeare (not "shapee"), and 6,783 A.D. has yet to occur.
@StefanAjax101 but deniding those facts only proove that you are one of the illuminati, like athiests who denied god is a evil pagan santanist. robot werewolves can time travel, in fact kenndy is a robot werewolf from the year 1,200,000 AD and since all other presidents of the United States are werewolves robots from the future as well and all werewolf robots are jewish it dose mean that jews real run the country. open your eyes to the truth before they kill us all in fema death camps!
@abarrathemaster Allow me to clarify myself, 6,783 A.D. has yet to occur so you're not sure if this had happened. Also, it's impossible to go back in time. Therefore, your argument is invalid.
@abarrathemaster I'm with HollowXing1996 on this one: you're a fucking idiot with no sense of either formal or even informal education for that matter. Feel free to think whatever you like but if you post them online be sure to be kicked in the ass by educated fellows such as HollowXing and I. Oh, and by the way, I'm an athiest. Roland Emmerich is a great director. I hope he does more Disaster movies. Maybe he should pick up the helm of the Transformers series and do Transformers 4, since Michael Bay is leaving.
Anyway, I always thought Shakespeare was a fraud. The cinematography in Anonymous looks great.

7. He didn't retire. He collaborated with other playwrights. 'Pericles' 1611 with George Wilkins. 'Henry VIII' 1613 with Fletcher.
8. His knowledge of foreign countries is bookish. Ben Jonson criticized his mistake in giving Bohemia a sea cost in 'The Winter's Tale'.
9. A Latin inscription survives adjacent the monument specifically crediting Shakespeare's literary output.
10. Books were not placed in "wills". They were placed in separate inventories - and these were frequently lost.

2. His daughters were not illiterate. Their signatures survive.
3. Shakespeare's treatment of low characters has been regarded as subversive since he wrote. Hence long history of performances that edit them out.

5. Playwrights wrote from classical and contemporary sources. Not from life.

#9. My god, this textbook has been revised four times! Interesting.
