  • I wish there was a way of seeing both their hands at the same time. This is magnificent!

  • piano love

  • My brother and one of his friend's are going to play this at the Aspen Music festival next week!

  • Mad piano shred.

  • I think I prefer the 4 hand version to 2 hand version.

There's actually an 18 hand version you can find here on Youtube! It's humorous, but some parts are VERY convincing and sound EXACTLY like the orchestra!

  • two titans ofthe piano together!!!!!!

  • La Valse is so amazing, it's awesome even if it is reduced to two pianos

  • Why would any one want to reduce the brilliant orchestrations of Ravel down to one or two pianos.

<it´s like Beethoven symphonies for 2 pianos- why bother?

  • Ravel wanted to. And it's brilliantly played.

  • This is the original version. The orchestration came after...

  • Might you consider the piano version to be a working sketch?

This was the case with Stravinski. etc-

  • I think I am actually wrong. He wrote La Valse for Diaghilev, but he first presented the work using a two piano reduction to the choreographer.

Nonetheless, I don't think it matters whether the piece is performed by 2 pianos, 1 piano or a full orchestra. It's a great work in all situations (but I think I prefer the 2 piano to the 1 piano).

  • I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure this version came after.

  • @workingmansblues

It's not the original version, but it was used to present the piece to Diaghilev before it was first performed.

  • @MrStrav81

yes that's true. And it was the cause of a rift between Diaghilev and Ravel. Stravinsky was there too and when Ravel had finished playing there was no reaction from his audience. He picked up his and left. He never spoke to Diaghilev thereafter.

  • THANKS to you pierrot79; and you too,KearneyPiano.

    Cheers

P.S. It's marVelous, not marCelous, of course!

  • Marcelous!! WHO'S the author of this transcription? Both Nelson and Martha?

    Someone answer me, please?

  • Ravel himself, I think

  • Ravel himself did both the transcriptions for this piece for both solo piano and piano duet

  • my god, she's so gorgeous

  • Stunning

  • This is an amazing piece. i think i prefer the orchestral version though.

  • pas moi the orchestral version pales compared to this

  • @TJFNYC212 as usual (selon moi)
