  • Good idea. Get it at amazon? Big Ugly? really????? ha ha

  • effingham illinois... i live there

  • i wanna do this! when will this be on??????

  • This is so cool! How does he find the people. My roomate comes from a town near Horneytown NC which is 25 miles from Climax (NC) Has he been there too?

  • Post this video on smallwondersofamerica and you could win a trip to the grand canyon.

  • thanks, well check it out.

  • Hmmmmm...Squirrel salad? She's a great lady! When wll we see more?

    Arch

  • Good video. Fun. When will it air?

  • Heard about this book on National Public Radio (Weekend Edition) and wondered how he did it?

This film shows how. I bought the book after NPR and it's a "Gas!" Great pix. I wanna see more!

  • I think this is a really interesting way to travel and learn about people. The funny names of the towns take the focus off the subjects allowing them to show a more ungaurded side of them selves. I love Gary's real and natural responses to the people and situations, like when Dosky shot the gun. The video was put together very well and drew me into the stories. I would like to see more of this series.

  • Cool! I'd like to do this. Maybe when gas gets cheaper. :-(

I did check the pix out at gladstone,com...wow! Sexy cowboy in Dickshooter, Idaho. Hmmmm...

  • This is something I've always wanted to do and he's done it...twice! (apparently there's another book called REACHING CLIMAX AND OTHER TOWNS.) Sounds good to me and you don't gave to fly on the airlines!

  • Looks like a Title in search of a Theme. All the " portraits" look alike and uninspired, whether they are from the towns of Insipid, Inane or Pedestrian

  • You gotta be kidding! Have you seen this book? I have and he 60 images are just outstanding. It's fall-down funny reading.

See for yourself. Check out the little galleries on the Author's site. Google "Gary Gladstone "

(That's where I got the book via Amazon)

Then, check out his other book "Reaching Climax And Other Towns Along The American Highway" and have a look at Dickshooter, Devil Town and Double Trouble.

These are classic Americana portraits and the kids giggled.

  • CH,

Sorry, but titles like "Passing Gas" and "Reaching Climax" should initially clue you in about the contents. This is Howard Stern, lowbrow, fart humor. It was a poor idea with even worse execution. There is no

relationship between the name of the town and one smiling resident after another. The video even makes me uncomfortable. This guy is manipulative at best. To be continued...

  • CH,

If you really want to see images that will haunt you for the rest of your life, an artist on a journey, true portaits of Americana and America, try

    Richard Avedon's American West.

    Portrait Photographer ? I don't think so.

As per your suggestion, I went to Amazon. There was one review, beyond perhaps his friend's and families, that seemed spot on. I will try to post it here.

  • "I heard a radio article about this and it sounded like the perfect Father's Day present. I found only favorable reviews here, so I ordered it. If, instead, I had flipped through it at a bricks and mortar store, I would not have purchased it. There are plenty of towns with funny names. In some cases, the author was unable to find a good explanation for the name. I can see how that would be difficult since he was usually in each town for only a short time".

  • Many of the towns were just names on a map. In these cases the author found local residents willing to stand in front of nothing and provide exaggerated grins, or policemen willing to pose beside their cars at roadside. The author ruined an already mediocre project by disrespecting the local residents. The condescending remarks, couched in attempted humor in the final pages, are unforgivable".

  • Clearly "wnilly 100" (willy nilly, I assume) hasn't read the book. We did. It's wonderful, well written & has nothing remotely "off color" stuff anywhere in it. Willy must have some kind of personal issues or other problems that cause her spew nonsense at a great idea, well done. Hey, willy girl, could you show us your work? This book is classic Americana.
