This is sooooooooo wrong. There is no way that the rips that were already in those jeans were done in this way. I agree with alekastar, wearing a hole with an abrasive is a much much better technique! Make sure you work across the fabric (side to side, not up and down) so that you don't break the white threads that will become exposed.

this is stupid....there are so many ways to do this, and you don't have to wash them to get them to fray. you can use a razor blade or the edge of a knife, you can also use sandpaper.
