@weatherfield57 Hi - the wood used for the Aztec Calendar in this engraving is called Alder. It's a medium colored wood, and when engraved gives the best contrast between the wood and the design.
@weatherfield57 I'm not sure if the lacquer is cab acrylic, but yes there is a lacquer on the alder sheets we use. The lacquer coating allows you to wipe away any smoke or debris that sticks to the piece during engraving or cutting. Without the coating you'd have to sand away the smoke that stains the wood.
I have one of these! My dad works for a laser company in colorado named Epilog Laser. They can even do detailed 3D photographs on wood and aluminum. Very advanced technology.
