lol yeah, that band sucked balls, but damn. Vizzutti is incredible. Not even gonna bullshit you guys, I got to play with him in a clinic he held at the University of Washington, my freshman year of high school!
I bet i get thumbs down for this, but he really isnt as musical as he should be with that technique. It is sad that he is one of the best living trumpeters. Bring back Davis, Gillespie, Armstrong!
he is playing the regular over the rainbow, but he is adding in some things, there is no sheet music for the things he adds in. but yeah if you want the regular over the rainbow, personal msg me and i will give it to you lol.
whats awesome about him is that everytime he plays bby him self he has like a bucket of ice. and if any1 here actually knows the trumpet well it's that if you hit high or when you plays loud and other stuff. like that your trumpet absorbs a lot of traction from wind speed. so when he plays carnival of venice he has to put his trumpet into the bucket of ice cause it gets so hot from im tripple tounging double octives.
no i'm not. look it up on google. or something. plus my sectional teacher gave us an entire lesson about it. he met him allen personally and he told him.
Having a cold instrument will make the note become flat, the air moves slower causing the note to settle under the pitch. The hottest your trumpet can get is however hot your body is, usually 98.6 degrees farenhiet. thus, as soon as you start playing, your tuning will change, and be very difficult to maintain. maybe even a 40 cent difference. Bottom line is, Iced trumpet-bad
thats not what i'm getting at though. i not saying he puts his whole trumpet in the ice just the part where the mouthpiece goes. k this is why. my teacher gave us a lesson on how when you hit a d in the staff yours blowing wind around 80mph. thats alot so when allen plays he's hitting all the crazy stuff. so he's making all this friction and eventually his mouthpiece gets to hot to play so he has to kool it down for a second. he doesn't leave it in there he justs puts the mouthpiecepartfor3secs.
what makes him so magnificient is that he makes it look so easy... and he hits like a C above the staff without making it sound like screaming.. god he's great watch Night Breeze whoever reads this
Dude you're absolutely right, he makes it all seem so effortless. My private teacher spoke with him at ITG a few years ago and he told my teacher that they had to make him leave the practice rooms at Eastmond because he would practice for so long
Eastman? Wish I could find a clip of him playing some theme from star trek. Sounds silly, believe me, but heard him in person and couldn't get it out of my mind for weeks. His sound is just there, regardless of circumstance.
Well... you have to remember they're students... and knowing how high school rehearsals go, that's probably the first or second time they've played with the soloist
That's my major complaint about school bands. How can they not tune up better? School bands are notorious for having a collective out of tune experience. Use one reference and tune up before the performance. I can barely tell what notes they're playing when the trumpeter stops periodically. He knows he's playing tennis in a mine field, but sometimes you just have to accept the conditions and run with it. His control and tone are excellent by the way.
My complaint is not the missed notes but the lack of tone quality of the group. You would be surprised how good tone quality can overshadow a bad note every now and then.
LoL. Yeah, that band was a bit shakey to say the least. Even a man as skilled as Vizzuti wavered a bit through that, a few mis-pitches and the such. Its really hard to play at your best when you have such a shaky band backing you up.
I would guess somewhat. Without actually seeing the music he was practicing from its nigh on impossible to guess if it was all commited to memory, but if I had to guess, judging from the fact that he's a capable jazz musician I'd say he's paraphrasing (using but not sticking directly to the melody and including additional notes to add interest).
He didn't improvise in the traditional sense though, as he didn't take a solo, he stuck to the melody throughout
Man, he just sounds soo good on the higher register. Well, the lower one, too. Quite a few people can "play" some of those notes he's hitting, but not actually Play them. He's resonating and not squeaking the note out. That touch of vibrato sure helps, too.

At least their school has a band program, unlike many unfortunate middle and high schools across the nation that 1) don't get funding for fine arts and can't afford instruments/instructors or 2) don't have enough musicians to make an ensemble
whats wrong with you people...your comparing a trumpet legend with a high school band??? Of course hes going to sound better than the band....if not theres something wrong
True, True. Seriously everybody, don't be down on the band, or Vizzutti. It is a difficult song to put together, and this group actually does an excellent job. And Vizzutti, wow, I had the tremendous fortune to actually have lunch with the man while visiting a college I am now enrolled in, and he was clowning around the whole time, messing with everybody. He really does love playing for for the sake of the music, and I don't see why playing with a high school group is anything to looked down on
As a high school band member, whom Allen Vizzutti is playing with this very night I have to say you're comments are not only uncalled for but highly incorrect. He loves going to high schools and helping to teach us, especially us other trumpet players.
In short don't speak for a man you havn't even met much less know.
On a side note he is one of the nicest men I've ever met and the best trumpeter I've ever heard (and I've heard quite a few)

Hey, c'mon fellow musicians...The band isn't playing wrong notes left-n-right...it is sophisticated complex chord structure! It's the cutting edge of the musical frontier! And the texture is called Beginner Band Motif!
I hope the music dept. paid Vizzuti to be there. He must truely suffer sometimes doing these cameo appearances.
I feel for professionals who find themselves in front of high school bands like this. They are notoriously out of tune across the band. LOL...I am writing this as I listen and the band just came back in and I cringed! Literally! And HE has to keep a straight face. DAMN...they REALLY have no sense of pitch!!! Poor Vizzutti!!!
Watch his face when they start the piece. LOL... I think he's thinking "good god, not again". This is a high school? You gotta be kidding me. This sounds like a beginner band.
were u perfectly in tune in high school? thats what i thought, i agree they suck nuts, but cmon u can't blame them for being outa tune, they've been playing for like 4-6 years
Perfectly in tune? Nope. At least close? YES! That band in the video is horrid. And yes, I was part of a high level band that competed so intonation was preached.
First of all the key to no pressure high notes has nothing to do with the "chops" or your mouthpiece it is all about your air and being relaxed. Second of all the order isn't lips, mouthpiece, horn. It is more like air quantity, air pressure, straight airstream, tongue position, centered hard stream straight through mouthpiece, horn, production.
the "no pressure theory" means that there is contact between the lips and the mouthpiece, however he doesnt push the trumpet against his lips to get out high notes. its like when u play low b's and lower, you only use contact to play. he does that on his high notes.
That was supposed to be a response to the ASSSTUD guy who posted awhile back but somehow got posted up here. It was directed to the guy who made a racist comment towards Mr. Vizzutti, who is in my opinion the most technically gifted trumpet player in the world period.
Yes it's true some band programs aren't as good as others. But I think we can all agree allen dominated this :P. But one thing did ruin it, who the hell was clapping the whole time?
The kids in the band had to start somewhere right? We arent born playing as well as maynard, we all have to start playing at some point. Vizutti probably has as much experience as all those kids and the band director combined.
Yeah, he's pretty well mastered it. It helps if you don't play with any pressure of your lips on the horn which most people make the mistake of doing.
that is true, i actualy have learned or have tryed really hard to not play with presure. its much easyer if you have built up the endurence, like not playing for 4 months and then picking up the horn and screaming out a double G, its not easy NOT to use presure. o and a other thing that helps is all the AIR! air is 1 of the many keys to perfect trumpet playing. wright to me if you need any tips. im sure i have a bunch saved on my comp to help anybody that wants to learn anything new and helpful
lol... well thats not really my speicalty but i know this much, dont use so much "atack" back off the air that is really "forced"... and useing a legato tounge is almost like a sler* (spelling) but with slight seperation...
A hard attack is done like this. put your tongue in the T position having it touch the top of your mouth. And blow. Pressure will build up. Release the tongue and let the build up pressure go through the horn. Really hard attack. Now do the opposite for a legato :0). aka no built up pressure fluid stream of airjust "bump" the air with the tongue.
There's no such thing as no pressure. If you play a trumpet hanging from the ceiling on a string. There is pressure. Pressure is used to seal the airstream around the lips and get more meat in to the mouthpiece for a fatter sound in the upper register. This "no pressure theory" is completely bogus. Point is, just pick up the horn and make sure you upt good air in to it. That should be your only focus" if what you're playing sounds good, that's great, ifit's not.. then fix it.
you should know what i mean when i say no presure, well that is if your a trumpet player... with as little presure as posible! you will destroy your lips if you apply too much presure, thus destroying your ability to play!
When my teacher plays high notes, there is usually a jet of mist out of the left side of his mouth, just beside the mouthpiece. He plays beautifully and always has a near perfect sound. I see what you mean by pressure, but I think it is best to not see a white ring around your lips when you pull the horn away.
I use pressure for certain notes, but if you're really good with it you don't need any pressure. You should be able to play the whole song with just your lips, then your mouthpiece, then your horn.
playing on the mouthpiece and playing on the horn are 2 different things. The only way to reduce pressureis to strengthen the embrochure "properly" and that comes with proper practice.
I see what you're saying. "If you're really good, you can do it with minimum pressure." If you're really good you have trained properly. And yeah you should be able toplay it with minimum pressure
For all of you that don't know, "Musical perfection is impossible" Were all human.
The reason why we play music is to express ourselves and emotions, at least thats why most of us, it shouldn't all be about whos the better person, just listen and enjoy it, its one of the greatest things we have in this world.
Vizzutti sounds great. The band is alright (they're kids). Musicians should be pleased that there are opportunities for high school kids to meet and play with world class talent, whatever the reason.
I hope there is a special place in hell for people that use YouTube to to talk down videos and hassle commentators. Let's try to keep it PG!
oh come on.. hes playing with the band because of politics.. do you think he goes around to all of the crappy bands in this country and plays with them? no.
"the band sounds awful" ... so what? ... some people don't really get the point here. Mr Vizzutti has a big heart to play with a young band like this... he is inspiring these young musicians... giving them dreams to possibly pursue a rewarding music career. Thanks for the post...this was very nice.
just because you like things shoved up your ass... doesnt mean that everyone else does. dont be mad because i actually tell the truth. do you honestly believe he chose to play with that shitty band because he didnt have anything else to do? come on.. use some common sense.
I think It's great that Allen would go and play with a band such as this. Considering Allen is a yamaha player that makes sense, and also I find it funny people who criticize a player such as Allen one of the worlds top musicians, and they do it poorly. Cornet, not Trumpet, is a conical instrument. it is sad that people think so highly of themselves to make them venture so far out as to not speak professionally, and if your gonna try and argue the term "suck" is professional your wrong.
Listen guys--this isn't supposed to be the New York Phil. I'm posting this so the families of those kids can remember the concert. Mr. Vizzutti is a phenomenal player and an incredibly nice guy who cared about every musician he worked with that week. Bravo to him.
trumpets are cylindrical not conical and a crappy recording couldnt possibly capture the depth and true tone color of vizzutti. Plus the band sucked. you dont know what your talking about
nobodys comparing the two.. its incomprable.. im saying in general.. this band is a joke..my middle school band and many others i heard play much better
You are bound to have a lot of intonation problems in a public high school band, you just have to deal with it and Allen Vizzutti sounded absolutely great.
That band is absolutely awful. I think it was their terrible intonation that made him miss a few notes. I have played with out of tune groups and it is really hard to sound your best no matter who you are!

He is one of the best trumpet players in the world indeed. Although, i have to agree this performance isnt his best. Maybe he was just outta practise or something, coz usually he woulda raped a solo like that. If you didnt like it listen to some of his other stuff, seriously mindblowing
I would agree with this assessment and only add that Al Vizzutti on his worst day is still better than 99% of the trumpet players out there on their best day.
Well said, from one who has played since 1960 I have heard many who should not be playing the trumpet. If you are wanting to hear a great trumpet player listen to Rafael Mendez.
He is probably th greatest trumpet player of the 19th century. He had the circular breathing ability as does Lenny G. Rafael is Doc Sevrenson's idol.
I'm always posting little details like this that nobody seems to notice. But as an oboist I'm very picky. Even though the soloist tries to play it in the mood and beautiful, in my opinion I believe he doesn't realize the sorrow of this whole piece, and is playing for himself, not for the sake of music itself. It could not matter, but to me or a person like me I just notice these things and wish it was played so.
this is about as sad as trumpet gets. the trumpets design - conical bore, shallow-cupped mouthpiece, and brightness of sound create a different mood entirely from what one would would expect in a song like this.
This vid is truly nothing special...it just wasn`t his day

And Vizzutti, wow, I had the tremendous fortune to actually have lunch with the man while visiting a college I am now enrolled in, and he was clowning around the whole time, messing with everybody. He really does love playing for for the sake of the music, and I don't see why playing with a high school group is anything to looked down on

As a high school band member, whom Allen Vizzutti is playing with this very night I have to say you're comments are not only uncalled for but highly incorrect. He loves going to high schools and helping to teach us, especially us other trumpet players.
In short don't speak for a man you havn't even met much less know.
On a side note he is one of the nicest men I've ever met and the best trumpeter I've ever heard (and I've heard quite a few)

this high school band sounded like shit!
fyandao 3 years ago
Hey, c'mon fellow musicians...The band isn't playing wrong notes left-n-right...it is sophisticated complex chord structure! It's the cutting edge of the musical frontier! And the texture is called Beginner Band Motif!
I hope the music dept. paid Vizzuti to be there. He must truely suffer sometimes doing these cameo appearances.
DancingSpiderman 4 years ago
I feel for professionals who find themselves in front of high school bands like this. They are notoriously out of tune across the band. LOL...I am writing this as I listen and the band just came back in and I cringed! Literally! And HE has to keep a straight face. DAMN...they REALLY have no sense of pitch!!! Poor Vizzutti!!!
LetsReason 4 years ago
Watch his face when they start the piece. LOL... I think he's thinking "good god, not again". This is a high school? You gotta be kidding me. This sounds like a beginner band.
commakozzi 4 years ago 2
were u perfectly in tune in high school? thats what i thought, i agree they suck nuts, but cmon u can't blame them for being outa tune, they've been playing for like 4-6 years
tubatubatubatub 4 years ago
Perfectly in tune? Nope. At least close? YES! That band in the video is horrid. And yes, I was part of a high level band that competed so intonation was preached.
LetsReason 4 years ago
First of all the key to no pressure high notes has nothing to do with the "chops" or your mouthpiece it is all about your air and being relaxed. Second of all the order isn't lips, mouthpiece, horn. It is more like air quantity, air pressure, straight airstream, tongue position, centered hard stream straight through mouthpiece, horn, production.

Awesome tone quality

O_O He clipped 2 notes.
BandGeekEb 4 years ago
the "no pressure theory" means that there is contact between the lips and the mouthpiece, however he doesnt push the trumpet against his lips to get out high notes. its like when u play low b's and lower, you only use contact to play. he does that on his high notes.

Eyesgoogle 4 years ago
The kids in the band had to start somewhere right? We arent born playing as well as maynard, we all have to start playing at some point. Vizutti probably has as much experience as all those kids and the band director combined.
rhcp211 4 years ago 2
wow... did you see the way he played all of his notes with as much ease as even all the high ones... wow he is truly a wonderful player!!!
trumpetplaya01 4 years ago
Yeah, he's pretty well mastered it. It helps if you don't play with any pressure of your lips on the horn which most people make the mistake of doing.
Felegund1 4 years ago 3
that is true, i actualy have learned or have tryed really hard to not play with presure. its much easyer if you have built up the endurence, like not playing for 4 months and then picking up the horn and screaming out a double G, its not easy NOT to use presure. o and a other thing that helps is all the AIR! air is 1 of the many keys to perfect trumpet playing. wright to me if you need any tips. im sure i have a bunch saved on my comp to help anybody that wants to learn anything new and helpful
trumpetplaya01 4 years ago
Do you have any tips on a good legato tongue? Like, for a concerto or something pretty.
Felegund1 4 years ago
lol... well thats not really my speicalty but i know this much, dont use so much "atack" back off the air that is really "forced"... and useing a legato tounge is almost like a sler* (spelling) but with slight seperation...
trumpetplaya01 4 years ago
A hard attack is done like this. put your tongue in the T position having it touch the top of your mouth. And blow. Pressure will build up. Release the tongue and let the build up pressure go through the horn. Really hard attack. Now do the opposite for a legato :0). aka no built up pressure fluid stream of airjust "bump" the air with the tongue.
asmcriminaL 4 years ago
There's no such thing as no pressure. If you play a trumpet hanging from the ceiling on a string. There is pressure. Pressure is used to seal the airstream around the lips and get more meat in to the mouthpiece for a fatter sound in the upper register. This "no pressure theory" is completely bogus. Point is, just pick up the horn and make sure you upt good air in to it. That should be your only focus" if what you're playing sounds good, that's great, ifit's not.. then fix it.
asmcriminaL 4 years ago
you should know what i mean when i say no presure, well that is if your a trumpet player... with as little presure as posible! you will destroy your lips if you apply too much presure, thus destroying your ability to play!
trumpetplaya01 4 years ago
When my teacher plays high notes, there is usually a jet of mist out of the left side of his mouth, just beside the mouthpiece. He plays beautifully and always has a near perfect sound. I see what you mean by pressure, but I think it is best to not see a white ring around your lips when you pull the horn away.
Thankyou for the legato tips.
Felegund1 4 years ago
I use pressure for certain notes, but if you're really good with it you don't need any pressure. You should be able to play the whole song with just your lips, then your mouthpiece, then your horn.
chasevold 4 years ago
playing on the mouthpiece and playing on the horn are 2 different things. The only way to reduce pressureis to strengthen the embrochure "properly" and that comes with proper practice.
asmcriminaL 4 years ago
Which is, indirectly, what I'm trying to say.
chasevold 4 years ago
I see what you're saying. "If you're really good, you can do it with minimum pressure." If you're really good you have trained properly. And yeah you should be able toplay it with minimum pressure
asmcriminaL 4 years ago

For all of you that don't know, "Musical perfection is impossible" Were all human.
The reason why we play music is to express ourselves and emotions, at least thats why most of us, it shouldn't all be about whos the better person, just listen and enjoy it, its one of the greatest things we have in this world.
skaterguy3343 4 years ago
Vizzutti sounds great. The band is alright (they're kids). Musicians should be pleased that there are opportunities for high school kids to meet and play with world class talent, whatever the reason.
I hope there is a special place in hell for people that use YouTube to to talk down videos and hassle commentators. Let's try to keep it PG!

of course compared to him, the band isnt going to sound great. oh well..too many judgmental people out there.

"the band sounds awful" ... so what? ... some people don't really get the point here. Mr Vizzutti has a big heart to play with a young band like this... he is inspiring these young musicians... giving them dreams to possibly pursue a rewarding music career. Thanks for the post...this was very nice.

Search google for free sheet music + name of the song and else just sheet music + song...In the worst case you have to pay a few bucks for it.
Or search for the midi file, and turn it into sheetmusic.

You are bound to have a lot of intonation problems in a public high school band, you just have to deal with it and Allen Vizzutti sounded absolutely great.
curtis123465 4 years ago
terrible band... he of course is wonderful, but not on this performance

If you didnt like it listen to some of his other stuff, seriously mindblowing
nmead88 4 years ago
I would agree with this assessment and only add that Al Vizzutti on his worst day is still better than 99% of the trumpet players out there on their best day.
Kanstulman 4 years ago

EnglishHornYay 4 years ago
Maybe as an oboist you don't realize that the soloist is one of the greatest trumpet players in the world.
Airman410 4 years ago
you are just an idiot and don't realize that Allen Vizzutti makes a living playing "in the mood" of songs
curtis123465 4 years ago
this is about as sad as trumpet gets. the trumpets design - conical bore, shallow-cupped mouthpiece, and brightness of sound create a different mood entirely from what one would would expect in a song like this.
