I read that Steve dedicated this song to James Honeyman Scott not long after he passed. A beautiful song dedicated to another very gifted musician. You can really feel the uglier side of the industry, listening to the sadness of the lyrics.
I like seeing the latter-day Steve. He's more a musician, less mugging, doesn't seem as eager to grab the spotlight. Knowing his backstory, I am grateful for his recovery. As everybody knows, you sell your work much better when you're not splitting your pants trying to.
Ugh. Awful sound. I grew up with Forbert and I appreciate his voice sometimes, but after a bit it gets old and grating...Im searching aroundon here for one of his songs that still warms my weary soul.
Steve Forbert's body of work is equal to or better than anyone's ... and yes, IMHO that includes Dylan. He has recorded dozens and dozens of original, sweet, melodic, clever, smart songs, and he has never had a weak album (unlike Mr. Zimmerman, who has at least a dozen stinkers), But, hey, it's not a contest, I guess. I just really love Steve Forbert's 30+ years of wonderful music.
@froggo66 Lets not exaggerate ok? Mr Forbert's is a talented and a good guy by all means but to compare to Dylan is a bit to much. Sure that is your opinion and musical taste is subjective like mine. Why not see the to guys as just some of the talented musicians that gives something? Sorry I just get a little fed up with all this " I like this guy and now I'm gonna compare him to everyone else to prove he is the best" stuff.
@harrasin I just saw him solo myself. Also a small venue, also one of my best music experiences (perhaps THE best)! What a wonderful musician, and also a warm and friendly guy!
just saw him with my dad at Centenary College in NJ, i was the youngest one by at least 20 years, it's sad to think that kids my age have never heard of him, he has so much talent<3
@alanf999 I saw him solo in Portland, Maine a short while back. It was a small venue but it was also one of my best music experiences. Without a doubt, he is one of my favorite musicians!
This takes me back, I wore out his first three albums on my turntable and have only listened to Steve occasionally since then. Thanks for this posting and thanks for all the other postings.
There is a lot of great music out there, but listening to Steve is head clearing and soul cleansing. And of all the fine versions of “When You Walk in the Room” his is the best.

Great! Loved him in late 70s and early 80s. Now a more "mature" performer but as lyrical as ever, and perhaps even more proficient on guitar and mouth harp.
My brother has been a fan since I was a little kid - I used to listen to this song all the time 30 years ago - We are going to see him tonight in a tiny venue in Ashland, Virginia - I can't wait - Thanks Steve for rockin' for all these years -
Saw Steve at The Stephen Talkhouse in East Hampton, NY... about a 50-seat venue (really!). Great show all these years later. He was fantastic! Hang in there, Steve. Don't change or sell out for anyone!
Loved this gentleman's music for over 30 years and I had the great honour of finally getting to see him at a very small venue called The Maze in Nottingham England late last year.Believe me it was so worth the wait and I send Steve all my thanks for a memorable night. God bless ya!
Steve will be in Woodbridge, NJ on Oct 7th, 2009 in an intimate 250 seat church on main Street. The series in :Music On main Street" and is found @ WoodbridgeArtsNJ
I agree with Beefy 142 .. Sreve Forbert ,,, is a grat singer / songwriter ,...love all his albums ...never seen him live ... someday in Scotland . thanks for posting ..mikeja
I loved this song from the very first time i heard it..It's one of his best...And i know what he means by dirty stinking town..cause i live in on myself..And i love the part where he says, be a step in time. i know what he means.
Actually Laurel is a really nice. Nice art museum there. I used to live in Meridian and it is a hard assed town. They aren't giving away anything in Meridian. I always thought of Laurel as female and Meridian as male.
Laurel isn't nice. Use to be about 15 or 20 years ago. Now it's all illegal aliens, criminals, punks and Po-lice behind every bush with a radar gun. At least Meridian takes care of Bonita Lakes better than Laurel does Mason Park or the Sports-Plex.
Sawmill Square could be put to shame a strip malls.
Ha, those lyrics. Dirty stinky town. I wonder if that was thought of after Sanderson, Wayne Farms, the sewage pond or Masonite.
You're welcome! The audio version of this track is from the live CD MERIDIAN...the studio version is, of course, from Steve's debut album ALIVE ON ARRIVAL.
Saw Steve at the Cluny in Newcastle last December (or could have been November, either way winter had started!)

@Jujunater Checked out your channel and you are leaving your self wide open for some
serious hits. I am not going to do it but you should remove this unwarrented flame of a
great song about being young which is sung with serious talent.

It almost a curse when a young artist is labeled as the next Bob Dylan, but this music holds up well and Steve has aged very well.

Little Stevie . . . still love it after 30+ years!

Steve Forbert always seemed to me like an unknown Bob Dylan. He didn't have as many hits but the feeling was there. Maybe more like John Mellon Camp.
