@SuperKol91 It's not so much a cure, but it is a treatment as your body will process the alcohol before it processes the anti-freeze which will kill you, giving you time to either vomit the anti-freeze back up again or seek medical treatment. I was actually reading medical advice on the topic a little while ago and the long and the short of it was if you should ingest anti-freeze for whatever reason, raid the drinks cabinet and call for a taxi to the hospital.

I'm Irish and the only time I ever heard of anyone dying of alcohol poisoning over here, he was an Englishman. Of course, I don't follow coroner's reports or anything but there you go.

The same sort of thing happened in ports of California during the late 1800's. For some reason, it was hard to convince people to take a low paying job going across the Pacific Ocean for 5 years. It turned into a business to get crews for boats. Certain bartenders would get them really drunk, or give them Cigars laced with Opium and sell them into service. They would be out of port by the time they woke up and would have no choice other than working on the boat for that time.

Wood alcohol (methanol) is harmless if you are intoxicated with beverage alcohol (ethanol).

As wood alcohol is not directly harmful, only when the liver tried to break it down to formic-acid. BUT, if your body is chock full of ethanol then that pathway is blocked, methanol stays methanol till it is removed by kidneys.

In fact, the medical treatment for wood alcohol poisoning is to ply the patient with liqueur and keep them very drunk for 24 hours.

And whilst I'm sure there were many Welsh people in New York at the time, there was likely a lot more Irish, especially with a name like Molloy, which is common in the south and west, the area's with the highest level of emigration in Ireland.

alcohol is a treatment for antifreeze poisoning, so adding antifreeze to booze would make the antifreeze less effective as a poison.

It can be used as a treatment though, if nothing else is available. Antifreeze isn't dangerous until metabolized, and alcohol requires the same enzymes to be process, so it greatly slows the processing to the point where the levels of the metabolized antifreeze in the blood aren't enough to be dangerous.

Keeping that in mind, depending on the ratio of antifreeze to alcohol... it really doesn't make for much of a poison.

@seahorseoysterfish That is true regarding the wood alcohol (Methanol) too. That's the cure for methanol intoxication actually- ethyl alcohol. It counteracts its effects, so if you're already incredibly drunk on booze, a few glasses of methanol would probably have little, if any, effect.

@seahorseoysterfish Very true. It's not a perfect antidote persay (though it is very good); rather, it just partially prevents the damage caused to internal organs. A general recomendation for someone who consumed antifreeze is to drink several shots of hard liquor. There is another chemical which is a better antidote, but it is very expensive.

Antifreeze has a sweet taste, and is said to jive well with soda. Because it is sweet, animals will drink a lot of it whenever they find a spill.

I guess it works like methanol poisoning: If you drink straight methanol, you'll be seriously poisoned as it's broken down. However, mixing it with ethanol can save you: The relevant enzymes preferably break down ethanol, so it slows down the breakdown of the methanol to a speed where your body can get rid of the breakdown products instead of them building up to harmful levels.
