Its bullshit. If you buy the current issue of Shonen Jump Alpha, You only have it for 4 weeks. Sorry, I dont get rid of my old manga's. Sometimes i like to go back and read past volumes. I think thats the main reason im so against the digital Jump. Though, i've always preferred a physical book over an ebook.
I have been getting shonen jump for years, since 2004. I cant believe them stopping the print versions. It sucks and rather not have the digital. It may be convenient to some. But I prefer the print version to almost anything hands down.

I doubt this heralds the end of physical manga. periodicals like magazines work better with a digital business model, the tankobans will probably always sell in physical format in some quantity. You said they aren't listening to what the fans want, but if the fans wanted it it wouldn't be advantageous to switch to digital in the first place. If they make more money in digital format, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot as a company not to switch.
I sware, i'm not all that big on shonen jump magazines but if manga EVER isn't distributed physically anymore.. oh my god idk what I'll do.. i still have a long way to go on collecting.. i want these books for the rest of my life. i want to read these books when i'm a fucking old man! i barely have any right now
I thought the US version of SJ was poor compared to the Japanese version, but it was better than nothing. It was through magazines like Mixxzine (Tokyopop's monthly manga magazine in the 90's) that got me into the medium. The print version is important. I know a lot of people at work who don't have a computer or had to recently give up their internet because of the recession. People like that will be hit hard with this move and with all the piracy going on anyway, I don't see this working out.
Manga is destined to fail here in the states. Because everyone who reads manga either downloads it, reads it online, or bitches about people not buying any while only owning 1/4 of one series...

If you like a series you should try and support it. Nobody tries to do what it takes to make a series succeed. A product is only as good as the consumer makes it. If nobody "likes" it obviously people will over look it or just hate it based on popularity/sales. Manga and anime don't do well in the USA because...
1) Dubbed vs Subbed
2) Internet=Free Everything
3) People who only like 1 or so series (Usually Big 3 lovers)
4) People who only love/hate a series & can't have an in between

A good example could be One Piece, Naruto's beginning saga(When Naruto is a kid), plus some other animes. The only animes that have done good in US was Dragon Ball Z and Avatar, both got live action movies due to their popularity and their respect. Naruto will never get there, never! Bleach I hope so, Full Metal Alchemist I hope so, and Durarara.

I forgot to mention I hate digital distribution. This not only applies to books, but to video games. I hate buying full games off of the PSN. Not only does it take a large amount of memory, but they charge the same shit as the physical media. It's a huge profit and its really just to make more money.

If I really wanted to read it all Online, I would f%^&*ing read them Online. There are dozens of pirated websites that I can read them. What's good about physical books is they don't have any of this digital rights distribution BS. The book is printed in America, but my book store can have it or I can buy it online. But with the digital distribution, they won't be able do it worldwide unless the get the rights to do so.

Physical copies replace by digital copies well I can see why they would do this because they are losing money and thou don't want them going bankrupt just because of the fans these companies need tho make money to become better. Just look at the business side of it.

Anyways, I stopped subscribing to Shonen Jump sometime in 2007 because I found the magazine had gone downhill. However, I think its sad that physical copies is ending. I only found out about manga in November or December 2003 by walking into a bookstore looking in a magazine section seeing Yugi on the cover and picking up Shonen Jump.

shonen jump didn't sell enough for viz to keep producing them. So would should they do, still lose money by releasing them? No! They had to cancel it. Now you get chapter 2 week after their release in japan, and if it's succesfull they definetely gonna try to shorten the gap. Yes I also love the physical copy but you still get the volumes and chapters earlier online, so this is a good step forward.
A tragedy in itself, bad enough they got rid of borders. But little by little everything physical will become apart of the digital age. Which isn't bad but shonen jump is something every anime fan looks forward to, the fact that it is being taken away is just pure penny pinching on their part.

A physical volume of manga in your hands will always be 100x better than reading online. it's part of the fun of reading, seeing the covers, reading the special pages. I'm glad I have a giant manga collection, i hope others can get theirs too.

Broke my heart when I heard that they are going digital on the Shounen Jump. If they start going digital on manga too, that would really piss off a lot of people and not be very profitable. I like buying the manga so I can physically hold them on my hands, and also as a collectible hobby.
I mean, if I have to read manga digitally, then what's the point of buying them when I can read them off some website for free?

PEOPLE,this is a great idea!.Most people dont know about manga outside of japan,so it isnt like these companies are making millions.Because of this they have to cut back.And it is a monthly magazine,not even weekly(with only like 10 chpters in each)We have to be radical about it,not just think'Oh no,no more manga to put on my shelf'.YenPress do it so why carnt they and to be closser to the Japanese releases seems pretty awesome to me.Stop the negitivity

I'm not a fan of moving to Digital releases either. I like to actually hold a physical copy of everything. I like to be able to read things without power. Now we will be held hostage by electricity. I somehow completely missed this video and it was a good one.
Anyways, I stopped subscribing to Shonen Jump sometime in 2007 because I found the magazine had gone downhill. However, I think its sad that physical copies is ending. I only found out about manga in November or December 2003 by walking into a bookstore looking in a magazine section seeing Yugi on the cover and picking up Shonen Jump.
Sadly, this won't happen for kids now.

shonen jump didn't sell enough for viz to keep producing them. So would should they do, still lose money by releasing them? No! They had to cancel it. Now you get chapter 2 week after their release in japan, and if it's succesfull they definetely gonna try to shorten the gap. Yes I also love the physical copy but you still get the volumes and chapters earlier online, so this is a good step forward.

I am in an agreement with you, @MrForneverWorld. I think it's ridiculous the way things are going these day. Granted I love digital, but sometimes I just want to get off of the computer, or take a break from my Iphone for a while, and read an actual book or a magazine. I want to give my poor eyes a break every so often from staring at the bright lights. It's bad enough that my vision is going bad because I'm staring at my monitor too much.

A physical volume of manga in your hands will always be 100x better than reading online. it's part of the fun of reading, seeing the covers, reading the special pages. I'm glad I have a giant manga collection, i hope others can get theirs too.

If there was a potential opportunity to lower the starting cost of producing something, and maximize the profit, it'd be crazy not to take it. I buy every issue of the Shonen Jump just for having them and collecting even though I'd have read the all the chapters before.
There's just that overwhelming satisfactory in owning them, reading them now and then, and just to be there on your shelf or wherever when they're not being read.

I read manga both as books and here on Net. But I definitely prefer reading it in the big paper mode as I've seen Shonen Jump is published. Sadly though, I don't have enough money to order it's English version here in Finland.. :___( But its REALLY, REALLy sad if the trend now is that everything's gonna be digital soon... It's just not good that you have to buy a GADGET to read.. Sounds like they are goin to make us retards who need some extra help even to read.... Those bastards.....

Well, to be honest I read manga's online, but in my opinion there's nothing better than holding the real copy of Naruto in your hands. but Shonen Jump canceling is gonna ruin manga because there's no one to pay the authors. Who's gonna pay Kishimoto, his boss? Last time I checked he didnt have a boss, he made the desicions. So no pay check = no manga. Shonen Jump screwed us, and themselves.
