Biden: So literacy tests, as long as they're equally applied, are alright.
Sowell: Sure.
Anyone with any common sense would realize that under slavery it was illegal to teach slaves how to read and/or write. Whites had an advantage over Black people in terms of voting rights. At least Whites had an opportunity to learn how to read and write. Slaves did not. I believe there were about 10 million slaves in the US during the 1800s.
"I'm just trying to figure out what you're saying." Classic Joe Biden. Can't understand intelligent thoughts. Also, Biden's lame attempts at calling "racism" in the end fail immediately when you consider what Sowell had complained of earlier with primary education failing black students. @elsquibbs Literacy tests were used to specifically target African-American voters after the Civil War. They were still used during through the South to stop African Americans from voting. This is why the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed. This was the first time in 95 years that the Congress acted to implement the Section 2 of the 15th Amendment (ratified in 1870) which states: "The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
Sowell: (translation)Look at me! I am so great! I am black and I did not need any help from government to succeed! You losers can lick my boot! I am successful why can't you? Never mind I am going to be a professor for 60 years so you lazy suckers are all out of luck!

He tried to make Sowell look racist. Sowell's thesis was really that they wouldn't have been accepted to MIT had they not been black, but may have excelled elsewhere. The pool of young blacks at that time was not as big as the pool of young whites, so obviously the number of blacks able to handle MIT would be smaller. Sowell is simply saying that requiring them to be accepted when they are unable to handle the school only hurts them, the exact opposite of affirmative action legislation.
It is frustrating to watch such a mis-match of intellects. Biden, unable to follow Sowells thesis, tries to discredit him by referring to a matter of record (black academic results at MIT) as a belief on the part of Sowell.

What White Liberals can't figure out now, just like they couldn't figure out when they were holding the whip and the keys to the chains, is blacks don't need Liberals to force them to work. They force them to not work with minimum wage. This, in turn, forces them to live on welfare.
Surprise! Surprise! DemoKKKrats forcing blacks back on the plantation. Then conning the best and brightest into dependency through "Affirmative Action."
@Chaicoffski EXACTLY! I went to school with kids from the hood and most were unteachable! a few were great students but the school was bad because it lowered it's standards for the majority! those students that did well were thought to be on the same level as those from better schools....they weren't.! not because they didn't have the capabilty but because the bad school didn't prepare them properly!
The Deconstructionism of modern Pseudo-Humanities (esp. Sociological fields) make them easy-A disciplines (I know from experience). Obama majored in the KING of these (Political Science). Also, an agressive Affirmative Action attitude in these years (when Obama studied), raises sad doubts about black accomplishments. These two facts taken together, mean that his marks don't reliably tell us anything about him, good or bad.
If a white person said that, he'd be accused of racism, and probably by other white people. Biden come on. He showed his contempt for the evidence, and tried to pander to peoples emotions, simply believing something does not make it true, the truth is independent of what you believe Biden.
At 4:40 Ted Kennedy is thinking "Gawd, how much longa is this guy gunna tawk? I'd, er uh, kill faw ah drink right now. I'm so thirsty, I, er uh, envy Mary Jo Kopechne right now "
"Never let schooling, get in the way of your education." It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell me calculus wont benefit me in life. Thomas Sowell doesn't speak for black people, I am willing to bet the two top comments are by white people. What they really want to say is he is a good nigger, keep talking down on your own race. He is smart, but just as brain washed as the uncle toms walking around. Oh yes, I need to go to Harvard to prove to white people I am smart.
@sambam2694 You seem to be under the impression that there is one uniform "black people" and that anyone who strays outside of that spectrum is automatically a "brain washed", "uncle tom".
Do you really want black people to all think and act the same way? Does being intelligent or holding a specific political affiliation make less black?
You seem to have a lot of thinking to do, I'll leave you to that.
@s0beit C'est la multiculturalism. They don't want people to be diverse, they want people to be organized in all of their happy little cartoon cultures.
@s0beit Well put. The true sell outs are those who want to maintain an image of blacks as a single monolithic personality that perceives any opposition to racial quotas and black victimhood as passive fetch and step. Every black youth in America would be well served in following the example set by Mr. Sowell.
@s0beit But black people are divided as a people, even our intellectuals. It is all based on a ideology that debates whether we need help and how much of it we do or don't deserve. You never see Chinese, Arabs, Latino's divided in their intellectual opinions like Blacks. We think if we become conservative and reject popular intellectual movements that that will help black ppl. There is always a predictable objection on how liberally we distribute help and black ppl stand in the way.
@sambam2694 If Thomas Sowell was white you would call him a racist. But because he is black you call him an "Uncle Tom". Yeah, that is the extent of your thinking. Now go kill yourself.
Biden is overmatched. Just about anyone would be overmatched with Sowell. All Biden could do was attempt (and fail) to put words in his mouth. Pre-hairpice Biden is a dick.
I don't know why but I had to turn up my computer speakers to hear this. Anyway, this makes me wish Thomas Sowell had run against Obama, and that He would have been our first truly black president! I know that libs would have painted him as an Uncle Tom because he makes too much sense! It doesn't fit their white guilt mentality! That's why Biden was struggling to comprehend the fact that Sowell doesn't think lib whites are doing blacks any favors, Biden has a look of incredulity!
@kindofbluenyc LOL!Another sufferer of PDS(Palin Derangement Syndrome) ,for whatever reasons she makes liberal men(if those effeminate metros can be called that) and women go into permanent PMS.
I think it may also prove helpful to some of the viewers here to try to evaluate many of the more strident claims of the anti-theist critique ("brights") from a ideological/ metaphysics perspective. Check out the recent article by Jackson Lears in the May 16, 2011 issue of the The Nation entitled "Same Old New Atheism" .The article offers a compelling analysis of Sam Harris' works. Consideration is given to general atheistic social perspectives
I am sure that Joe Biden was shocked to learn that legal principles should not be driven by single issue organizations working through propaganda and venom to secure his support and ensure his seat in the US Senate.
A person once told me that liberals were more racist than conservatives. I didn't buy it.
Now I'm thinking...If you think government handouts and social spending make people better off, what would a reasonable person think of the fact that blacks have gotten so much of these and yet remain poor? There must be something wrong with them, no?
If you think government attention screws people over, the poverty/prison rate among blacks makes perfect sense without impuning their character/biology.
@darwinkilledgod Forget of the racist or racism!Liberals or conservatives have never had the interest of survival of black people including the black people who are part of these parties.Black have no power. The only power we do have is our spending power and thats done with everybody else except us. Meaning all our money is in the hands of others. When your consumers instead of producers. You will get people with a slave control mentality. Waiting for white approval.
@arronnov I don't disagree, but my point wasn't that conservatives care about blacks; humans generally don't care about strangers, regardless of color. But my point was that conservatives have a good explanation for the poor state of black culture: government paid them not to marry, to go to schools they weren't qualified for, to go to terrible public schools...
If you're a liberal, all those things were supposed to help, so what other conclusion could they draw but that blacks are inferior?
@darwinkilledgod The ideal of being conservative is nothing new that whites brought to the rest of the world in the past 600yrs Africans Asians Natives of the Americas and etc where conservative before whites came along. They did for themselves for themselves in their best interest for their survival. When whites came they forced away and now today condition blacks and etc that you need us and our ways to survival.
Biden is one stupid liberal cunt, "I just want to hear you, what you're thinking", Sowell has common sense while Biden has been living the clouds his whole life and he can't understand how a black man is saying these perfectly accurate truthful things that happen to go against Biden bullshit P.C agenda.
@pagrigor : not just incompetent: Joe Biden largely takes credit for drafting The Patriot Act. And here's the really scary part: it was drafted LONG before 9/11 under a different name (I think in the Nineties) and was pushed forward by Democrats but roundly defeated (mainly by the Republicans) as being unconstitutional. In the wake of 9/11 Bush and his gang re-named it and forced it through with little opposition other than that of Ron Paul (R) and Dennis Kusccinich (D). Thanks a lot Joe!
By your account,if the Republicans, who were the majority party at the time the Patriot Act was past(and recently renewed--with votes by people like Tea Party candidate like Allen West)were against the Patriot Act on Constitutional, and not simply ideological or moral grounds, then it stands to logic that they would have rejected it under both Bush & Obama.
Only 3 Republicans opposed the '01 bill in the House & Russ Feingold (D)was the lone opposition from either party in the Senate.
@thirdshift47 : Hi. Thanks for the comment and for the clarification- much appreciated: To be honest with you my real point was that such a nasty piece of fascist legislation which was largely blamed on Bush and his gang was, in fact, initiated by Joe Biden and people of his persuasion within the democratic party at a time when there was no "war on terror". I guess what I was really trying to say is how frighteningly similar Obama's crowd are to Bush and his.
Obama's Administration by any honest observer can by no measure be said to be any different than Bush's.
Infact Obama voted in favor of the '06 renewal of the Patriot Act as a freshman Senator.
That's why as a true leftist I couldn't vote for the man.I was hoping that he was playing to the center as a candidate simply to get in the White House but,as it turns out,he's even further to the right than I suspected.
@thirdshift47 : He surprised even me - and I was delighted when he was elected. But now I'm absolutely shocked at how far down the line he's gone. I knew he could never be all things to all people, but to cosy right up to the very things that America reacted against when they voted for him is really very shocking. Ralph Nader warned everyone (sic) "Look at his record- it speaks for itself!" I'm one of the people never did - I was too delighted to see the Bush's out. I feel kind of stupid now.
@pagrigor Actually, if you listened to Biden's particular wording of the questions, he baited Sowell into acknowledging something that Sowell would fundamentally disagree with. Biden is an incompetent boob, but in the line of questioning shown, the fool came out ahead. Sowell didn't catch the nuance of his question.
When he stops reading the script around the 7 minute mark he really takes off, the intelligence is suddenly matched the sincerity and passion he has for the issues. An excellent defender of the truth as always, a shame that the public listened to the demagogues and not the brilliant Thomas Sowell.
His book Basic Economics is simply excellent, he is as good a writer as he is wise.
Basic Economics was a well-written, solid book of research, but for his stated purpose I found it misleading. In the Introduction he talks of Basic Economics being used potentially as an economics textbook, but throughout the entire book it seems impossible for him to keep his bias out of the picture (especially look at his bit on rent control). If you're goal is to provide a textbook, I think you should provide an analytical approach and try to avoid bias as much as possible.
@BloggerMusicMan Of all the econ texts I've read, I've never seen rent control covered in a positive light. They always use it as an example of price ceilings causing excess demand and thus, shortages.
I've also never seen an econ text free of political bias, as most of them now lean toward a Keynesian, centre-left world view. A bias is nothing new. A monetarist bias would at least be refreshing. A bias-free book is most desirable, but that's impossible given all the debate in econ.
@BloggerMusicMan yea sorry bud do you know what text book i am using in my ap econ class... yea krugmens and if you think he keeps out his bias you got another thing coming and besides sowell's "bias" is fact so nice try.
Here we witness a towering American patriot testifying on behalf of another great American patriot. The corrupt, rude, snickering leftist Democrats are the tyranny incarnate that our Founders so explicitely anticipated and warned us against.
god, it is such a simple concept that Sowell crystallizes at about the 8:40 mark:
"See, people are talking about how judges should be sensitive to this particular group or that particular group and if that means anything - if that means that he is applying the law differently [ to different groups of people] - that's precisely how blacks were held down for generations in the south..."
Sowell is brilliant and the points he makes are the bedrock of conservative libertarian thinking.
After the assassination of Judge Bork's character by these Democrats, it is evident they completely ignored any testimony given such as demonstrated by Thomas Sowell. Kennedy had a central role in this destruction and it should be a permanent stain on his legacy such as it is.
Geez, just look at Kennedy at 0:06. Looks like he was dying to get out of there and get a drink or twelve.
And what can you say about Joe Biden, really? The guy is either completely stupid or extremely evil. He clearly didn't care, or couldn't figure out, that the policies of his party nearly singly-handedly destroyed the black community in ways that even a century of Jim Crowe didn't manage.
Teddy Kennedy (GOD rest his soul) did quite a bit to slander Bork, it was wrong and simply set the tone for the illicit battles we have in the Supreme Court today.
Biden thinks that a definite number of blacks should be placed at MIT and Harvard period. Because he isn't going to listen to Sowell no matter what. And these people, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, and many other like minded democrats are still in power. No wonder society is so burdened today and we are struggling with the same problems.
@jamo387 what the hell is wrong with you? oh right i forgot your probably some conservative. smh ppl who have no sympathy for human being despite there ideologies.
@luv4uification That drunk rapist f*ck did more damage to this once great republic than any other politician I can recall. Sympathy for him? Yeah, I don't think so. Get your head on straight. I'd sooner lay a wreath for Hitler.
@luv4uification - Ted Kennedy lived a life of priviledge, a life above the law, and did so at the taxpayers expense. He never missed an opportunity to increase the size of government, or reduce the rights of the individual.
Sympathy for him, he lived 77 years - that's a good run, or 48 years longer than Mary Jo Kopechne did.
@sapientauthorityace Hey ,you are catching on!! That about sums it up. They fooled the minorities and poor people onto the vote plantation. If you can't see that, well then I guess either 1) You never thought about it 2) You are apart of it . or 3) You don't understand it . So take your pick. The evidence is overwhelming and irrefutable
Look at that ass-hole Ted Kennedy, yawning, wholly disengaged, already made up his leftist liberal conclusion. He recognized that Bork is a threat to his progressive anti American agendas. Its a shame that he got his way in the end.
what a fool Joe Biden is, when lets say 10% of the population is black americans then ofc there are not going to be the same number of black academics at the MIT level as white americans who lets say is 70% of the population. Its really simple. Joe Biden is trying to spin mr Sowell words around so he sounds like a racist, its classic demagogery.
I love it. Biden just ends up prancing off, knowing that he's scored a stupid political point. That's all he cares about. He knows what's popular. That's all ruling class elitists care about. He'll continue promoting policies that hurt minorities simply because they're popular policies, without caring about the damage it does to kids--damage carefully explained by Dr. Sowell. The substance is irrelevant to politicians like Biden. Sowell is ALL about substance.
Again Sowell is spot on with his observations ! Kennedy yawning. I think it was past hi tea-time ;) seeing kennedy there reminds of just why i found him repulsive. His worst nightmare a smart black man which translates as a non voter for him and the libs. Biden has no clue what Sowell is talking about..
@carlindelco . Sorry friend but I think you are wrong this time. Biden does know.
Whether there's a god or not, there are good and evil. I hope he realizes before he dies, that he has caused evil to be done. I think it would be fitting if he were to die in terror of the very hell he professes to believe in.
When Ted Kennedy yawned at 2:30 I wanted to kick him in the face, put him in my car and drive it into a river... It's stunning to watch a moron listen to a genius and not get that the ideas are interesting. It's like watching a creationist listen to Richard Dawkins lecture and hear nothing.
And this man is our vice president now?! What an asshole, trying to make Thomas Sowell who GRADUATED from Harvard seem like he's out of touch with students' abilities to succeed at said school, or else a very pathetic attempt to brand him as racist against his own race.
Biden says "I take itYou don't think there are enough qualified blacks out there to fill those vacancies". If course not. Harvard and MIT obviously don't think there are enough either otherwise they wouldn't be lowering the academic standards to get more admitted. If that wasn't the case then affirmative action would be a nonissue. Very view people contend that the objective academic performance of all groups are equal and yet Biden is so sanctimonious in his tone. I don't get it.
That really burns me up. Biden knows damn well what Sowell was saying about black kids getting into those schools, but tried to spin it into Sowell saying he thinks blacks in general didn't deserve the opportunity.
The appropriate response is that there are many in the black community who have the natural ability but are robbed of their opportunity by substandard government schooling. There are many examples of intelligent people of all races being short changed by pathetic schools.

A person once told me that liberals were more racist than conservatives. I didn't buy it.
Now I'm thinking...If you think government handouts and social spending make people better off, what would a reasonable person think of the fact that blacks have gotten so much of these and yet remain poor? There must be something wrong with them, no?
If you think government attention screws people over, the poverty/prison rate among blacks makes perfect sense without impuning their character/biology.
darwinkilledgod 10 months ago
@darwinkilledgod Forget of the racist or racism!Liberals or conservatives have never had the interest of survival of black people including the black people who are part of these parties.Black have no power. The only power we do have is our spending power and thats done with everybody else except us. Meaning all our money is in the hands of others. When your consumers instead of producers. You will get people with a slave control mentality. Waiting for white approval.
arronnov 10 months ago
@arronnov I don't disagree, but my point wasn't that conservatives care about blacks; humans generally don't care about strangers, regardless of color. But my point was that conservatives have a good explanation for the poor state of black culture: government paid them not to marry, to go to schools they weren't qualified for, to go to terrible public schools...
If you're a liberal, all those things were supposed to help, so what other conclusion could they draw but that blacks are inferior?
darwinkilledgod 10 months ago
@darwinkilledgod The ideal of being conservative is nothing new that whites brought to the rest of the world in the past 600yrs Africans Asians Natives of the Americas and etc where conservative before whites came along. They did for themselves for themselves in their best interest for their survival. When whites came they forced away and now today condition blacks and etc that you need us and our ways to survival.

Ah, so Joe Biden has always been an incompetent boob. Very enlightening.
pagrigor 1 year ago 65
@pagrigor : not just incompetent: Joe Biden largely takes credit for drafting The Patriot Act. And here's the really scary part: it was drafted LONG before 9/11 under a different name (I think in the Nineties) and was pushed forward by Democrats but roundly defeated (mainly by the Republicans) as being unconstitutional. In the wake of 9/11 Bush and his gang re-named it and forced it through with little opposition other than that of Ron Paul (R) and Dennis Kusccinich (D). Thanks a lot Joe!
MaxTallon 10 months ago
@MaxTallon
Only 3 Republicans opposed the '01 bill in the House & Russ Feingold (D)was the lone opposition from either party in the Senate.
thirdshift47 10 months ago
@thirdshift47 : Hi. Thanks for the comment and for the clarification- much appreciated: To be honest with you my real point was that such a nasty piece of fascist legislation which was largely blamed on Bush and his gang was, in fact, initiated by Joe Biden and people of his persuasion within the democratic party at a time when there was no "war on terror". I guess what I was really trying to say is how frighteningly similar Obama's crowd are to Bush and his.
MaxTallon 10 months ago
@MaxTallon
Obama's Administration by any honest observer can by no measure be said to be any different than Bush's.
Infact Obama voted in favor of the '06 renewal of the Patriot Act as a freshman Senator.
That's why as a true leftist I couldn't vote for the man.I was hoping that he was playing to the center as a candidate simply to get in the White House but,as it turns out,he's even further to the right than I suspected.
thirdshift47 10 months ago
@thirdshift47 : He surprised even me - and I was delighted when he was elected. But now I'm absolutely shocked at how far down the line he's gone. I knew he could never be all things to all people, but to cosy right up to the very things that America reacted against when they voted for him is really very shocking. Ralph Nader warned everyone (sic) "Look at his record- it speaks for itself!" I'm one of the people never did - I was too delighted to see the Bush's out. I feel kind of stupid now.

His book Basic Economics is simply excellent, he is as good a writer as he is wise.
chukmaty 1 year ago 42
@chukmaty
BloggerMusicMan 9 months ago
@BloggerMusicMan Of all the econ texts I've read, I've never seen rent control covered in a positive light. They always use it as an example of price ceilings causing excess demand and thus, shortages.
I've also never seen an econ text free of political bias, as most of them now lean toward a Keynesian, centre-left world view. A bias is nothing new. A monetarist bias would at least be refreshing. A bias-free book is most desirable, but that's impossible given all the debate in econ.
AshillaBeige 8 months ago
@BloggerMusicMan yea sorry bud do you know what text book i am using in my ap econ class... yea krugmens and if you think he keeps out his bias you got another thing coming and besides sowell's "bias" is fact so nice try.

god, it is such a simple concept that Sowell crystallizes at about the 8:40 mark:
"See, people are talking about how judges should be sensitive to this particular group or that particular group and if that means anything - if that means that he is applying the law differently [ to different groups of people] - that's precisely how blacks were held down for generations in the south..."
Sowell is brilliant and the points he makes are the bedrock of conservative libertarian thinking.

BillyWillis89 1 year ago 6
Biden says "I take itYou don't think there are enough qualified blacks out there to fill those vacancies". If course not. Harvard and MIT obviously don't think there are enough either otherwise they wouldn't be lowering the academic standards to get more admitted. If that wasn't the case then affirmative action would be a nonissue. Very view people contend that the objective academic performance of all groups are equal and yet Biden is so sanctimonious in his tone. I don't get it.
limited1defined 1 year ago
That really burns me up. Biden knows damn well what Sowell was saying about black kids getting into those schools, but tried to spin it into Sowell saying he thinks blacks in general didn't deserve the opportunity.
The appropriate response is that there are many in the black community who have the natural ability but are robbed of their opportunity by substandard government schooling. There are many examples of intelligent people of all races being short changed by pathetic schools.
