when you go from 5th and 7th to 3rd fret, try to do a pull of on the 3rd with both strings, sounds more fluently, more flutently then my english (which is not very hard)
questo video è stupendo!!!! Non ho mai imperato così in fretta! Era un bel po' che volevo imparare a suonare questa canzone(ho anche visto il suo video ma non ci ho capito nulla)
Can You write down tabs? i've been searching this for a long time, but i can't find correct tabs for this riff. and, please, write how You use fingers, cause this is very important for this song.
@red54642 I'm sorry my friend, I'm posting videos just to avoid to write down tabs. I hate them, I think they can never describe the right metric. Try to focus on my hands and fingers, you should work it out.
In the beginning it was produced only for a few friends of mine. Then I decided to share it on youtube, as it is. Maybe one day I will put the subtitles.
Even if spanish and italian share the same roots I can tell you that they are soooo different languages! trust me. I can talk/write english and a bit of french too. Spanish is not part of my personal knowledge....
He can speak in whatever language he chooses - focus on using your eyes and ears to see and hear what his fingers are doing - absolutely brilliant demo of the fingerstyle picking to open the song. A million thanks to aborille for posting this.
Great video! The only one I've seen where the picking seems to match Mark's (and he has said that's the key to the sound - in video v=aFMeez18PHU)! Please can you explain the picking in English?
Sure, whatever you can do will be much appreciated! Does the thumb strum down then the fingers strum up, down, up then the thumb strums down again? Grazie mille!
Well, since the Walk of life technique is pretty much the same, check another video of mine "Various Mark Knopfler's Licks 1". You will find the subtitles there. I talk aboout Walk of life technique starting from 6:00. That's the key to play most of Dire Straits songs. Let me know if it's what you're looking for.
hi great lesson, i think the only one that shows the proper right hand technique. do you know how mark plays those fast licks before the main riff? (he always does it when performing this song live)
Hey there, maybe you are referring to the fast intro to the song, before the main riff. In this case you can see the technique in another video of mine "Various Mark Knopfler's Licks 1" when I talk about the fast Sultans riff. Starting from 1:45 you will find I talk about the M4N fast riff at 3:00 more or less
I think you missed the point of my video. If I had wanted to focus on the right sound and tone, I wouldn't have used a 12W transistor amplifier, nor I would have uploaded the video on youtube. Anyway, you're wrong. Check the Montserrat video for example. He uses the neck PU.
and believe me i have talked with mark knopfler and i asked him about his secret of the sultans of swind sound, the money for nothing sound and the sound secret of his tours in 1979
at last i asked him something:"why it is so difficult to get your sound, when i don´t know your secret?"
he said:"first it is my finger picking, second i´m using special PU selections, third i´m using very simple effekts
No, I can't understand what's the point here. You are mixing a 1979 setup in this "money for nothing" thread, you talk about the Pensa Suhr PU setup while I'm using a Gibson like guitar. Again, this video is not meant to be a lesson about the right sound and tone. I hope you understand now
Ok, well he used both Pensa ang gibson guitars to play MFN. Honestly I prefer the gibson sound compared with the Pensa. You're right when you say that he doesn't use many effects. Some good reverbs and delays are pretty much all you need. Obviously a good amplifier is a must
I'm using a epiphone by gbson guitar. I changed the original pick-ups with two Gibson 58. On stage I use a fender twin rever amp, a doubledrive Tech21 OD, a compressor (sometimes), a delay (Boss DD3) and earnie ball volume pedal.
im using a fender jeff beck strat built in 1962 with custum brigde and some other parts, ah fender super reverb built in 1967, then two digitech pedals (delay, crossroads), a ibanez tube screamer ts 9 (no replica), a electro harmonix small stone phase shifter, a volume pedal (korg), and in a rack a roland gp-16 multi effekt board
the OD is a doubledrive tech 21. Plus just a bit of delay with a Boss DD3. The amp is a very old and cheap Marshall Lead 12W microstack, to be used only indoor (at my home). My standard amp is a fender twin reverb
Dovresti distorcere con POCO crunch+ un wah sempre aperto. Così fa Knopfler :)

Hi! What guitar effects do you use here? Is it a flanger? Anything else?
vremyanezhdet 3 weeks ago
@vremyanezhdet just an overdrive and a delay

when you have used your ears, you have used the bridge pickup and not the neck pickup!

aborille 2 years ago
i will say you something:
you use the same pick up selection as mark knopfler did it
because:
1st MK played ah Pensa Suhr guitar with a EMG 85, and two EMG SA Pickups
2nd MK played in all of his guitar ah special pickup selection
a out-of-phase selection
3rd of the right sound you are miles away
nizo2050 2 years ago
and believe me i have talked with mark knopfler and i asked him about his secret of the sultans of swind sound, the money for nothing sound and the sound secret of his tours in 1979

he said:"first it is my finger picking, second i´m using special PU selections, third i´m using very simple effekts
nizo2050 2 years ago
for example the tours with dire straits around 1979, I used only an compressor, ah delay pedal and ah volume pedal"
if you don´t believe it, check the photo of my youtube page
i hope you understand it now
nizo2050 2 years ago
No, I can't understand what's the point here. You are mixing a 1979 setup in this "money for nothing" thread, you talk about the Pensa Suhr PU setup while I'm using a Gibson like guitar. Again, this video is not meant to be a lesson about the right sound and tone. I hope you understand now

i won´t give you a bad voting
i have to say, that you have the best version whitch i have ever seen on youtube
i didn´t mix it, i only wanted to say, that he get his sound with very primitive things an without the latest effects
but you have passive humbuckers, and the pu in the pensa suhr guitar are aktive singlecoils with an humbucker
that i wanted to say
i hope you don´t missunderstand me
but your version is a great version!
well done! ;)
nizo2050 2 years ago
