  • Be very wary of ANY company that does not give you a clear way to cancel their services. ESPECIALLY when their default is 'automatic' billing.

I've tried twice to cancel the service, having taken screenshots of the billing set to 'do not renew' and still they renew. I have since canceled my bank account with that card so we'll see what happens now.

Do yourself a favor and don't use MagicJack until they give a clear and easy way to cancel!

  • @bnther36 I haven't had that problem myself... I made sure to go into the back office of mymagicjack and set it to manual renew. One of my Mjacks had expired for 4 months before i got around to renewing it manually... Been using them for a few years now along with friends who use it too and no one I know has personally had an issue with being charged without permission

  • @followyourbliss101 you and ur friend are the only ones

  • @2011savior oh, and I'm sure you've conducted a survey of everyone who's ever bought one and they all said otherwise... uh-huh, sure

  • is magic jack really only 20 a year or are their surcharges and other "extra" charges?

  • @TheElfcapone I just renewed one of mine and there's a sales tax or some surcharge fee that brought the total to $21 and change

  • @followyourbliss101 o ok so only 21 a year.. so no monthly charges... Nice

  • @TheElfcapone Mine is 20.92 with tax, had fot 3 years, no problems

  • I have a magic jack but I cant get it to work properly.. I had it before and didnt have much problems, but now I cant hear the person on the other end, the call doesnt even go through, or the magic jack somehow loses connection to the internet. Ive turned off firewalls, anti-virus and everything

  • @stopwhining1 might want to check phone wires - both where the cord goes into the phone and to the MJ. also did you try calling different numbers to make sure problem is at your end?

also, check sound settings on computer preferences

  • Can you make phone calls from your computer to any cel phone or land lines all over the world?

  • @Escorpio40 you can call any canadian or US based phone number - doesn't matter if it's cellular or landline - you can't call international without paying extra - better off using skype or another service if that's your main focus

  • @Escorpio40 You can make phone calls to any US, Canada phone for free. What people have done if they have people abroad they can buy an extra magic jack and ship it to them if your friend/family abroad have high speed internet. You can also use Skype.

  • @Escorpio40 It costs money for international calling, unless the person you are calling has a magic jack too. All MagicJack-to-MagicJack calls are free anywhere in the world.

  • Good info here.

  • Anyone Having issues with Magic jack and OSX Lion? I am, I upgraded and now the magic jack does work. Any suggestion?

  • @Tungsten30 great.... not surprised... I'm sure they'll upgrade their software - hopefully sooner than later.

  • @Tungsten30 I removed OSX Lion. I love my Magic jack too much :)

    Magic Jack > OSX Lion

  • why bother with magic jack when for a few more dollars you have nettalk?

with nettalk you dont need a computer and you could keep it in some corner without worrying about it.

  • @Francescaalejandro why? we're talking apples and oranges... for example you can take easily your magic jack anywhere - portability. There's a product that suits each person's requirements.

  • @followyourbliss101 nettalk is more portable...with magic jack you need a computer. with nettalk you can go into a hotel, connect to the internet and talk. No telephone bills from the hotel.

  • @Francescaalejandro ok..... well you obviously seem pretty knowledgeable about nettalk - why not make a video review and educate others about it?

  • another quirk to report:

One of my magic jacks for no apparent reason reset my personal message and passcode for voicemail. Simple enough fix, but don't know why that happened unless it had something to do with one of the upgrades MJ does now and then.

  • @followyourbliss101 Blame it on Rupert Murdoch!!! Joking aside, I have had that happen to me as well and wondered about it.

  • @kc7jfv yeah - pays to check your own voicemail often - in this case i don't use it enough to think there'd be anything out of order.

  • I love my jack

  • I love my jack I have had a few calls that I had to hang up due to an echo or a delay which I believe is due to my internet connection and weather, I bought it for long distance and I have used it for over a year, my only complaint is it would not let me dial into a conference call and I am not sure how to do that. I would like to add overseas calling to my service as well.

  • @whatamiwhoami yes - i've had the echo thing happen - usually when one or both parties are on speakerphones - hanging up and calling back sometimes solves that - or just switching speaker off.

The conference call issue i think has something to do with the switchboard in iowa that MJ and the conference services both use. Some conf. calls I am able to use MJ but others won't let you - kind of a bummer now and then, but not a deal breaker.

  • how would that be cheaper than skype? Skype is free for skype to skype users. Just get everyone you know to use skype and you won't have to worry about charges.

  • @MegaDeathwarrant well... that's the trick - getting everyone to use skype. Plus to point out again, if the other person isn't near a computer, they can't use skype very easily. unless they are on verizon with a cellular data plan/smart phone... right now i see they're touting the ability to talk all ya want and i believe verizon currently offers an unlimited dataplan - but u still have a monthly data plan charge...etc .etc. Skype is really a different breed compared to MJ, not fair comparison

  • when i restart my pent 4, my minute is more like four lol.... My volume setting keeps going to headset and then I will have echo when on a call, anyway to make it go to phone by default???

  • @irish89055 not sure what u mean - i know if my itunes is playing, magic jack likes to screw with the volume adjustments - usually cranking up the music louder than i had set it... a bit annoying and haven't looked into what can be done.

  • @followyourbliss101 ok, each time my pc is rebooted the volume control sets in the headset mode instead of telephone mode, which is want I want as I don't use a headset but my cordless phone. It not in phone mode you get a bad echo effect... Magic Jack works I just need to get used to all of it's quirks..

  • @irish89055 ok, that makes more sense - i've never used a headset with MJ so i was unaware of that quirk

plus the interface is a little different on a pc vs a mac. i get the echo / feedback if both i and the other person are trying to use a speakerphone at the same time - they don't hear it but I hear myself with a 1 second delay and it's horrible - usually one or both going off speakerphone solves it, otherwise i just call back and that usu. clears it up

  • I've had mine for 2 weeks and I love it. Use it for about 6 hours a day nonstop talking. It does drop a call now and then but I blame my internet connection for that. Hell, my cellphone dropped calls more often then the MJ does.

  • @1971SuperLead that's cool .... however, like with other super inexpensive phone services, MJ might cut you off at 5000 or 6000 minutes per month --- although i'm not sure why anyone would be on the phone THAT much unless they were using it heavily for business

  • @1971SuperLead - Does the computer have to be on in order for the Magic Jack to work?

  • @delacerdaa yes - the computer needs to be on - and not asleep... if you want a VoIP service that doesn't require this, oomba? ooma? fits the bill - but it's a bit more expensive

  • Comment removed

  • @ichoose2bhappy yes - that's the same as shutting the lid on a laptop.... just the way magic jack works. It has to be connected to the internet in active mode. The workaround would be to set your sleep mode setting to 'never' and just use screen saver.

another option would be to go with a different tech - like ooma - which costs a bit more up front - you're buying a $200 stand alone box that connects directly to the modem.

  • @followyourbliss101 Thanks for the information> i tried what you suggested and it work.

  • It SUCKS I have 2 PCs won't install all my friends hate it when I call they can't understand me I'm under water

can't wait till they wanta sell me another year,WalGreens won't refund or give a store credit

    I hope the inventer's dogs die........40.00 X 1000 worth of sickness

  • @leerider52 your experience is unusually bad - people who've had the most trouble are on very slow connections, bad wires, and old slow computers

  • @followyourbliss101 So true. I built a cheap computer with no monitor or keyboard, and just run of that through a router. It's basically a free home phone that telemarketers never call.

  • @leerider52 i was thinking about getting one, through the actual website though...did you try contacting the support on the actual site? maybe they will refund you..when u bought it at walgreens, did it come with a warranty or guarantee in the packaging?

  • why did u waste my time on this review

  • @PorkaZil why did YOU waste my time on a pointlessly stupid comment troll

  • better have good net service its like a meg a min

  • @192gary yup - i haven't heard anyone having much luck with telephone ip services over dial up. Also, quality can go down - short constant drop outs - if you are also in the middle of downloading something large like a video or large file.

  • nettalk is much better check it out nettalk dot com, you dont need to plug it in your computer.

  • i have Magicjack and Nettalk i have to say that Nettalk it way better because you don't need the computer running wasting electricity... also if you want you can connect it to the computer and use video phone. Magicjack just was to annoying to me because of the fact that you have to have the computer running all day. Nettalk it great quality.....MAgicjack suck... yeah it sucks the money from your pocket

  • @psyflare2000 hey thanks for sharing that - I hadn't heard of Nettalk before - looks pretty good - combines some of the better features of magic jack and ooma - i like that it can be directly plugged into the modem or router - a definite advantage over MJ for those who don't keep their computers on 24/7 like me.

50% more to use per year, but hey, we're only talking $10.00.

magic jack sucking money from your pocket? hardly unless you are dirt poor - and prob wouldn't have internet anyhow.

  • I have had magic jack for over a year, nothing but problems, quality for incoming and out going calls is a joke, when a call comes in you here every other word, and the party calling can't hear you either. Then to get support, they don't have a clue what there doing. Save your money, trust me, this product I give it 1/2 star!

  • magicjack is great….check out their stock (CALL) trading at high volume on the nasdaq and making profits

  • works perfect for me... love it.

  • August 30th - first time plugging my magic jack back in since the 23rd (the one that was malfunctioning) ... doesn't suck anymore - whatever was wrong has cleared itself up :-)

  • doesn't suck.....IT'S GREAT....CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF......it works for me

  • today, august 23, 2010, it DOES suck. one of mine is prompting a registration window which after entering info tells me it's already registered (well, duh) but then still won't let me run it... the other magic jack is not working to make outbound calls to landlines... cellphones yes, landlines no... incoming landline calls yes.... must be too many people on the network overloading the system. I still like MJ anyway for teh most part.

  • This is the worst product I have ever purchased. The insult to injury was dealing with their horrific customer service and live chat. Buyer beware!! The product never did work, they tried and tried at MJ with their brutal live chat..they kept transferring me to new "TOP" tech's. No one could get it working. I should have known better when they told me I could not register my MJ on my Mac and had to go find a windows based PC to do so...they didn't say that on the ad did they? HORRIBLE!!!

  • If you would recommend it...why ask the question IF it sucks? lol

  • wow people are crazy its not a scam if it doesnt work you prolly have a piece of shit computer or internet service 5 years for 70 bucks cant beat it magic jack has a few problems nothing to hard to fix

  • would this work pluged directly into the modem ? cuase i dont leave my computer on 24 hours a day

  • @StealthNinjaX2 i don't think so as there is software hardwired into the jack and when it's plugged in, you have to click on the icon to 'launch' it....

  • @followyourbliss101 ok, thanks for telling me

  • @StealthNinjaX2 you're welcome :-)

  • Renewal is $39.95 per year not $19.95. The initial advertising is very misleading which I find unethical. The device works well so if you don't mind being lied to than this device is for you. For myself, I don't do business with liars.

  • @ZeroCrossings777 you are mistaken...I certainly wouldn't want to assume you are a liar - merely spreading misinformation . . . magic jack offers a $69.95 deal for 5 years or 19.95 for one year renewal. $39.95 is what a new jack plus 1 year of service included costs. But of course existing customers already know this.

  • It's a great product. Much more like a real phone than skype even.

  • Majic Jack is a fraud. They advertise free calling and its NOT FREE. Read thier terms before you purchase this useless low quality device (SECTION 6 in their terms). My internet speed is 15 megabits/sec yet the voice keeps cutting. They have the WORST customer and techincal support. STAY AWAY! They suspended my account and its irreversible I lost $60 a week after I activated the device :reason: They calim that i made more then 20% calls than the average cutomer. Filing FTC and BBB today.

  • i have high speed internet it works fine with that its the highest speed!! when i had slow service it worked poorly so basically i love it no drop calls or any probs what so ever i would buy it a millon times but only with the highest speed internet!!

  • It never worked for me. I was hearing choppy calls . This product was crap for me. OOma phoneworked for me. Yeah it cost more but Ive been using it for 2 years and it work just like a real LAN line with no problems as far as choppy calls for 2 YEARS.

  • some numbers are blocked i cant dial any numbers in my area code . worked for 6 months now it junk.

  • It is a very uncomplicated device that works with ease. I can't understand why alot of people are not happy with it...

  • @The21time . . . some small minded people have nothing better to do with their time... some might be competition badmouthing the product

  • My friend who lives in Missouri turned me on to MagicJack & it saves me a whole lot of money + I have no issues with the product...

  • magic jack is awesome!!!!!!!

  • I'm on my 3rd year I love it. I just paid 19.95 and NO TAX for the whole year again.

You must have it installed on a computer thats close to a wireless router, otherwise your call quality will suffer. So make sure your computer is like 3 feet from your wireless router for excellent calls. Don't install it on a computer thats like farther away otherwise the call quality goes down. Use your cordless phone like me and walk around the house and yard

  • @jupiterscastle no sales tax? they charged me sales tax this time (FL)... thanks for the tip on using it over WiFi

  • How pissed off can you get at something that only costs roughly $20? You want something that works great 100% of the time, be prepared to pay more IMO

  • @ScubaSteveM45 exactly! good point! amazing how riled up some people get over this thing!

  • Thinking of getting magicJack, if anyone still has it, how is it working for you? Please let me know. Thanks!!

  • @Burgvati - i have 2 of them and just renewed one of them that was up for renewal. Sure, they may not be perfect, but they serve my purposes really well and for $20 a year? I still am amazed that it's so cheap compared o cellular, landline or even skype. probably won't be that cheap forever... esp with people like me opening my big mouth :-P

  • I have had Vonage for 5 years and has NEVER..EVER..given me a problem...tried Magicjack...I am happy to say, that I am STILL with Vonage !

  • @MrSYSTEM20 that's great you've had good experience with Vonage... yours is an exception to the rule based on the many people I've personally talked to.

At least we have plenty of choices for our comm needs :-)

  • @followyourbliss101 Yep...I have never had to contact customer support

in the 6 years I have had Vonage. Yep..I PAY that extra money for the convience of not having to deal with customer support that would rahter treat you like you are insignificant like Magicjack did...I don't care if they were offereing to pay me to use the product, I'd never use magicjack again. when my computer has problems, it doesn't affect my vonage...can Magicjack claim the same ? NO !

  • Our needs are simple and so MJ has paid for itself and the 2 years of service I bought with it. Two problems only after initial set up snags>> It will cut out if I download a program file but not while watching vids AND I have to unplug it when I use Roxio Creator 2010. This happened with Vista and Win7. Turning off autoplay helps but causes problems elsewhere.

All in all, though it's been fine.

  • LOL, this item cost $20 A YEAR (after the initial investment of $20) and people expect customer service...LOL...Get off your lazy asses and Google the problems you are having!!!

This item works very well 80% of the time and probably much better if your computer doesn't have 1001 glitches working against it!

I am a total supporter of it.

As stated, don't give up you home-line or cell.

    '

It's close to the next best thing, but not all the way there!

  • yeah, that sounds like what happened to me. It worked perfectly the second time, but certainly not the first. The little loading image came up, the silhouette of MJ, but did not continue to the other prompts. Under "My Computer" it would show the MJ dial surface logo under "removable storage" on the first non working computer, but shows nothing on the working one, not even recognizing the MJ actually hooked up and WORKING!! Confusing!

  • First computer, could not register, dial tone, no connection however. Second computer, all prompts came up appropriately, I followed them, and had the thing up and working within 10 minutes. So far, within about a week of acquisition, It's been working wonderfully and I couldn't be happier. Just so happened that I have a couple computers around to experiment with. Once the software is installed it seems tough to remove, as I tried with my first computer attempt.

  • @dannon2010 . . . I tried using one of my MJ on a friend's PC running vista. They have their own MJ that work fine on it, but when i tried using mine on their machine, it would not load properly. Don't know why and didn't bother investigating further as it was a temporary thing.

  • I had a Magic Jack since Aug of 2008 I had a beeping noise called Support they had me change a Computer figuration it solved beeping Problem,My calls are Crystal clear,it is very reliable, the one thing I don't like is if a Numberis unhooked or unavailableit will hang it up no explaination, other than that....I Pay 1.70 a MONTH BEAT that!. I LOVE my Magic Jack,I think anyone having a problems has a Computer or internet problem,Mine Works GREAT!

  • Could you kindly change the title of this review? People who don't watch this may assume you are implying that magicJack sucks... thanks.

  • My friend has magic jack and people have been saying its been static when using it to call someone at another state but he hasnt been having any static so far, I can hear him well when talking to him and he can hear me also. He says everyone should totally ditch their shitty phone bill and go to magic jack. I'm planning on getting it when i move out.

  • Magic Jack is a piece of shit

  • Cannot received calls from a landlline. Their online support is a joke. I was promised that an "engineer" would email me with the fix. 60 days later, still nothing.

  • Magic Jack works fine if your configured properly and have no internet issues PERIOD...

  • net talk is better..no computer needed

  • DO NOT BUY THIS TO REPLACE YOUR BASIC HOME SERVICE. It's just not reliable enough. Support is likely some kid in a foreign country with a flow chart. I am very suspicious of any company owner who hides from his best customers and yet uses his daughter (if she really is) to sell this stuff. This gizmo is OK to send to family or friends in foreign countries so they can call you and you can call them.

  • actually, i did get this instead of spending a small fortune on a land line - if it wasn't for crappy cell reception where i live, i wouldn't have even bothered at all.

I agree - using his daughter is cheesy and exploitative - distasteful in my eyes... but I had hooked up with MJ long before they started running those ads

  • LOL, followyourbliss. It wasn't that he used his daughter, but that he used a kid and he really SUCKS at interviewing. At the end of the ad, he says "Everyone should try it..." The girl rolls her eyes. And can you blame her? What the f did he want her to say? "No, daddy, your product sucks.." or "Yes, daddy, that's kind of why I"m sitting here with two dogs, like an idiot, what kind of q is that..." Hehe

  • @sammy005 you are an Idiot! dont you know kids? she is just shy ..

  • this morning after waking my laptop (and relaunching MJ 3 times) it still won't work for calling land lines ... cell fones, no problem.. but when i dial a land line, it shows it's connected but i hear nothing.

This has happened before and clears up on its own mysteriously.

These are the times I want to say MJ DOES suck.

  • Magic Jack is junk. Period! Obviously, the guy doing the video review has not had it long enough to find this out-He will! I had it for 3 miserable years-I tried everything to get clear, clean calls with no white noise or echo and never did. I could never download large files while on the phone and the constant echo on both ends was pissing off callers. If you value friendships and have a need for clear calls-run away now from this thing! Get Ooma-no bills and crystal clear calls!

  • uh... gee, I've been using MJ since march 2008.... gee almost 2 years... you'd think that'd be long enough to decide if it's total crap or not.

people bitching about bad call reception should look at all the links that could be causing a problem. their internet connection, their PHONE . . . their computer, etc and yes, their specific magic jack unit.

  • I myself have issues sometimes with MJ - dropped calls, poor call reception (usually because both parties are using the speaker phone), but nothing compared to say, sprint cellular

  • My pc is high end and my internet speed is 12mgs-There is nothing wrong on my end and never was. Thats another sales ploy.

I had that stupid junk thing for nearly 3 years (and 3 different units) and it was one bad call after another with lots of echo and dropped calls. Now, I have had Ooma for 2 years now and have not needed to contact anyone for any problems.

So, because the original suckers of that worthless harware bitched so much, they may have finally fixed a few things-great! .

  • Caution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This will cost more than you think.

If you aren't satisfied with the service

    A) they will refund you the cost of the jack

    b) THEY WILL NOT REFUND ANY MONEY SPENT ON ADDITIONAL FEATURES SUCH AS A PHONE NUMBER OR MULTIPLE YEARS OF SERVICE PAID UPFRONT.

They also have no live customer service only a live chat. No complaints department. No phone number! You'd think they could afford a phone number after they rob you blind.

  • rob you blind??? what's your net worth? a $100? at least you're still richer than the state of california.

getting a phone number is not an additional feature... in fact, mj allows you to change your number once for free and then $5 for every time after that - although I would question what you are doing with the line to warrant that requirement

  • I used my Magicjack all the time, it is a fine product! I called Barrow, Alaska hotel to test its perfance and the call was crystal clear!!

  • One big problem with Magic Jack that will prove to be their downfall against new competition.

You MUST have a computer and it MUST be turned ON when you want to make or receive ANY calls. For international calls, each person you are calling MUST also have a Magic Jack to take your call and both of you MUST have your computers turned on every single time.

    Enter OOMA.

One time $249. No pc needed, no hassles.

Magic Jack is the Vonage killer.

But now OOMA is the Magic Jack killer

  • like anything, magic jack or OOMA for that matter won't be around forever... things change

also, there is plenty of business to go around - competition and options are good.

Don't forget about Skype - was here long before MJ or ooma showed up and it's still around... each of these services has their pluses and minuses

Word of caution to everyone reading all of these comments - check the FACTS for yourself and don't believe everything you read here as many people commenting are misinformed.

  • Thats Right! I have had Ooma for 2 great years and have had 0 trouble! All calls are better then any landline and 100% better then Magic Joke ever was. I paid $200.00 new on Ebay for mine. No phone bills ever!

MJ should fold up until they finish working out bugs. Dan Barslow jumped the gun. and launched way too soon.

  • They notified me when I tried to install that they had an update for windows 7. Once the update was installed it worked perfectly for me. Ive had it for 3 months so far with no problems regarding incoming and outgoing calls. The messaging service has worked perfectly as well. Sound quality is good. The same as a land line no better no worse. I'll probably test it for a couple more months b4 I fire my phone company which im currently paying $50 a month for.

  • works well for me - I use Google Voice number to keep my number consistent and for voice mails, etc.

  • Stay away from this company. They double charge by "mistake" and when you try to contact them via customer service, ...guess what? There is no phone number. You have to type to a person via live chat. Once they figured out that i was trying to get a credit for the double charge they simply stopped answering the chat. Then when i showed obvious signs of being upset she says "If you do not cooperate i will be forced to terminate this convo" I replied.."Excuse me?" - terminated- .....

  • MAGIC JACK CAN STEAL YOUR PASSWORDS!! I've figured it out trust me!

  • could you be a little more specific? steal what passwords?

your magic jack account password? why would they bother doing that?

do share rather than just spread fear and distrust without foundation :-)

  • @followyourbliss101 Ugh yeah, I'm not exactly sure why they do it but it got a hold of my dads credit card number, your probably thinking "how do you know it was the magic jack? well because it happened the first day we connected magic jack about an hour after we connected it. Proof enough for you?

  • MAGIC JACK CAN COME ALIVE AND MURDER YOU WHILE YOU ARE SLEEPING! I've proved it, cuz it happened to me.

*Please Note I Is Be Sarcastic I Be Know Grammer*

  • yes...i trust u...i trust u r a whore. great username...

  • oh yes, i'll approve your comment - good that people know your character. and show your prejudice and ignorance and hate.

  • I got a number from Beverly Hills!

  • it's 20 dollars a year! That's it! I used to have Vonage, but now I have this. I have been using MagicJack for FOUR months and it's been freaking awesome! It works just like Vonage and a home phone. You can take your netbook and magicjack ANYWHERE with Wifi and make calls! it's awesome!

  • exactly.... i can say i've been using magic jack for over a year and it serves my needs just fine.

I haven't tried ooma - only recently saw it in a bestbuy... it has some nice features that MJ doesn't have. . .

vonage - the few people I know who tried it in the past had nothing but trouble. and it was NOT cheap ($20 a year)

  • Vonage sucks! The vonage adapter manages your modem and then port forwarding sucks. And you can't cancel! I beat the system! I have had Vonage four different times! Four different accounts. What I do is,... go to walmart. Get a prepaid debit card and order Vonage. If you get sick of Vonage and try to cancel, they won't let you. But since you used a pre paid Debit Card from Walmart, when they try to overdraft your account, Vonage don't get shit. Magic Jack is awesome. Its like a normal phone...

  • @wwjoshdo Vonage is total fraud. I had bought their unlimited world calling plan which is supposed to cover UNLIMITED minutes to India as well but after 1 month, I got an email from Vonage and they said I was OVER USING minutes. If they offered UNLIMITED minutes, how could I be over using?

  • hmmm... i find that whenever a plan says it's unlmited, you have to read the fine print...

for example, with Skype unlimited calling, the fine print (last time i checked last year anyway) limited it to 3000 minutes - which sounds like a lot unless you do a lot of conference/internet calling.

  • Hi. I just ordered free trial magicjack today. Like you, i have a Mac. Using a g5 tower that I NEVER TURN OFF but it does go into energy mode, still, that shouldn't affect the phone service. Correct? Also, I'm assuming the software works fine for Mac and its more or less, plug and play ?

  • pretty much plug an play once you've set your mj account up and picked your number, etc... it says it can take several hours to start working, but I got a 2nd one that was fully functional within 30 min.

I'm not sure if the MJ will ring if your computer is asleep / energy mode settings will affect it. I know that when i shut my lid on my laptop magic jack won't ring, but when I open it up in the morning (awakes from sleep) i don't have to relaunch the MJ.

  • OK. JUST GOT my magic jack. I'll probably KEEP IT!! Works GREAT! On my mac, set up was easy. As for computer being sleep, on my G5 tower, if it goes to energy saver mode, i check "Wake for internet access" and this way if I get a call, while computer is sleep, it rings. I hear it. If I DON'T make it to phone, it goes to my email voicemail. Works GREAT!!!!

  • cool -thanks for the info!

  • i was going to buy a magic jack but there are too many mixed reviews. The deal breaker came when i found out that you have to keep your computer on in order to use magic jack. I hate that idea. I don't want to turn my computer and let it warm up every time i want to use the phone. i don't want to always keep it on either. What do you think about OOMA's VOIP service? there are no monthly or annual fees. one disadvantage tho is it's not as mobile as the magic jack.

  • those are excellent points GQ. I first saw ooma in a best buy a few months ago and checked it out - you are right - it's obviously not as mobile as a little magic jack box, but the plus side is you don't have to keep the computer on - a disadvantage to MJ -

for me, if i still had my desktop, I wouldn't mind leaving the MJ on because I don't turn off desktops... but with just my laptop, I am constantly plugging & unplugging the MJ as I travel. but if u don't mind checking VM, mj defaults 2 VM

  • magic is b.s

after a month and a haft, they closed my account down. i call them up, they say excessive use and i have to pay extra.

i'm like wtf... don't believe i'm gonna call them up again and record this shttt

  • how many minutes would you say you were using per month?

  • i love it,, use it to fax,,, receive calls at the same time,,, if its good enough to fax,, its good enough,,

  • Hey thought I'd add this. My mother-in-law is 82. She installed MJ herself in Colombia and it works great for her to call family and friends in NA. If an 82 year old non-English speaking woman can install it and get it to work, I think that the petty complaints here are irrelevant. I'd be ashamed.

  • "Petty complaints"?

ionamic, you MUST work for the company. It SUX, yes it's that bad.

  • If you are not bright enough to program your DVR, MJ is not for you. I bought TWO and they work exactly as I hoped they would...BUT if you are dumb enough to think this product replaces traditional phone service then you deserve what you get. I gave one to a family member in Colombia. She calls family and friends all over the USA...no charge. When I travel outside North America, it works great from a friend's house or a hotel room. Yes..customer service consists of an idiot with a script. Bad!

  • well said ! I'll say that I've had to use their customer service on occasion and I must've gotten lucky those times because they were actually helpful - script or not. But you should treat them with some compassion and not automatically assume because they're CSR, that they must be brainless morons who wish they were anywhere else.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone is really condescending and nasty to one that they might passively retaliate by acting stupid just 2 annoy

  • I agree. I don't treat them badly. My son worked for a telemarketing company once when he coudln't find anything else. After that, I imagined talking to my son. So I treat them all with respect. They have to make living too.

  • yup - and I wasn't directing my comment at you, using reply just makes the convo flow in a logical order :-)

I did telemarketing for a short bit when I was young so I know what a crap job it is too, lol.

  • What the f**k would you pay money for something that has been proven to be defective!? Besides that, the customer service is absolutey terrible! If you a**holes want to throw your money away, just send it directly to me and I'll return your deposit with a kick in the ass, because that's exactly what the retards at Magic Jack are doing to you.

  • yah this crap is cheap! my mom got the magic jack and we can hear the sounds in the phone but not the person

  • its not new technology lol

  • if its 10 years its new fag

  • well i just order the MJ via phone and after reading all the bad review I'm a bit scare.

I wonder how much they'll charge me at the end once the item is ship to me? and how do i cancel it if i don't like the product?

  • theres gonna be a 50 dollar hold on your card and you will get and be charged for 2. better off going to radioshack and buying it

  • hey , just wondering that why dont you talk about skype and vonage, compare to magic jack.......!!!!!

  • ummm... because this was a review, not a comparison.

Skype is great - but kinda apples and oranges to MJ... I'd say this new one called Ooma? is a very close match to MJ.

Vonage - no personal experience with that - but people tell me they aren't too thrilled - and it's quite expensive compared to MJ, Ooma or skype.

    I guess I just did a condensed/mini-review here, lol

  • does anyone know if after installing it on my PC can I connect it to my Apple airport express?

Would it work or it has to be hooked to the PC at all times?

  • good ?

I think the way it works is like a flash drive - everytime you plug it in, it 'mounts' and then - on the mac - you eject it like an external drive to disconnect it. I don't have an airport so I'm not sure if it would work by plugging it into the airport directly.

I'm thinking probably not, but I'm not for sure.

    Anyone?

  • I hope it does, cuz I don't wanna keep my PC on at all times, that is like the only down side to the MJ

  • Nope it wouldn't work with the router alone, you need a computer.

  • I had Vonage and is the same thing is MJ but the cost is huge then I bought the first one to try it out and it worked fine then I bought an other 4 as a gift for family members, I sent 2 to Mexico and they call me with no problems at all they work great and I've save a lot of money, sometimes the quality sound is not that great but is worth the money

  • yup - i've heard people having good experiences with MJ even overseas - which is good to hear when I take a trip over to europe and knowing i'll have cheap way to call home.

  • So you send it to them, they install it and viola!?

They can call you for free??

  • more or less - they can't be on dial up - wifi, dsl or cable speeds are necessary

  • DO NOT PURCHASE MAGICJACK it is not worhtit. Been dealing with their Tech Support for 2 months and they could not solve the problem, my issue was i cannot call some area in Canada, they claimed from their ads and website that ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS PICK UP YOUR PHONE AND DIAL...WELL THATS A LIE, so please be carefull. Also if your computer is connected to a network, hone or office then most likely you will have a problem, also if you have a Firewall then that is another problem, DO NOT BUY!

  • i play quake2 and it interups the game so i get back on quake2 and it stoped i was like wtf magicjack sucks ) :

  • watch out when you go to there web site if you fill out the info then change your mind at the end and just sign out you will still be charged .

  • I have windows xp home edition version 2002 service pack 3,have DSL.computer:AMD SEMPRON(TM) 2400 +1.67 GHZ,240MB OF RAM.WILL MAGICJACK WORK WELL WITH THIS OLDER COMPUTER?

  • I have been using AT&T local only phone service to save money, and then I buy long distance calling cards from walmart (instead of paying for long distance service).

Was $16/month, then $19/month. Now AT$T wants $24/month JUST FOR LOCAL service! I am so pissed.

I hardly EVER use the telephone. And right now its an issue because we have resumes sent out with this G.D. AT&T number on them.

We're just a nation of cattle with the government & corporations sucking the life out of us.

  • i hear ya... i'm planning on getting an iPhone to replace my lousy helio/sprint cell svc and not too thrilled with ATTs cell plans.

Even MJ I am wondering . . . i see them retailing in walmart, radio shack, best buy etc... I ask, How Much Is Enough? How many MJs do they want to sell? More than they can service I imagine.... greed destroys a good thing.

  • Just wait, the Iphone is going to verizon soon

  • usatoday[dot]com/tech/wireless/phones/2009-04-26-apple-verizon-iphone_N.htm

ATT has exclusivity into 2010... can't wait that long - it's been awful!... but glad to see it's more than likely to happen... i'll just have to fork out more bucks and switch . . . again.

  • Magic jack sucks

the person you call can barely hear you

  • that's because either you have a shitty internet connection or shitty computer, mmmm let's see... maybe not enough ram, or a shitty processor.

  • hey do you know how to delete the nums on the macic jack call list? thanks and please help

  • no I don't... If anybody knows how to do this, please feel free to post an answer :-)

  • just right click on the number and remove

  • I know you can reformat somehow. I think you go to "my computer" and find the F: drive (or the drive that is not your actual MJ). And it says format. Make sure you are not formattig the wrong drive! You can call MJ and they can help. but it erases everything!

  • Sounds like an easy gadget and the ease of use seems simple enough, but do I need to cancelled my verizon landline account and phone # since I'll be assigned a new # through this MagicJack?

  • that's entirely up to you... last i heard, you can't port a number over to magic jack so if you like your current landline, i'd keep verizon too and use magic jack as a 2nd number if you need it.
