I would say to the previous comments that this is an extremely select version of Britain. People think it charming and picturesque, ignoring the fact that Waugh himself was deeply suspicious of it, as Anthony Blanche says to Charles Ryder his paintings are 'charming' and also dead and meaningless. Although British people are by nature eccentrics, as our phenomenon of binge drinking and local customs of single motherhood and inventive benefit fraud imply.
