  • THis preempted Saturday Morning; dang Ch 5 FO THAT!

  • Fyi cadlepin bowling is a New England past time

  • tracking... classic lol

  • Back then, the ABC network aired the Professional Bowlers Tour, the most popular tenpin bowling telecast series...candlepin bowling was never played widely across America compared to the more-common tenpin game.

In Massachusetts, there are a few candlepin bowling and tenpin bowling facilities.

  • @mrceleb2006 well ABC still does show the 10 pin i think

  • skip to 3:40 for the actual bowling

  • this video was recorded with a true value camera

  • do you need to buy your own candelpin balls

  • @alexfischer90730 you can unlike tenpin balls they come as a set of four for around $150

  • @ezzy420 you buy 10 pin balls too... just not in a set of 4 and are there alley balls like 10 pin too

  • thumbs up if the host is probably 125 yrs old by now...

  • fairway lanes now closed may 2011

  • Jeez! check out those permanent souvenir trophies? Did Weak trophies have a surplus on little league consolation trophies?

  • EXTREME SKEEBALL!!!!

  • I'm actually glad you left the commercials in there at the beginning. Growing up in the Boston area, these old commercials make me feel like a kid again.

  • lol Tracking

  • wtf is candlepin bowling ?

  • @kemo593 candlepin bowling is the way people bowl up in new england it's just a little bit harder

  • I bowl regular 10 pin in Ontario, but am moving out to Halifax in September, and found out they have 8 bowling alleys, all of them Candlepin. I didn't know it was that huge out there. But apparently it is, so I guess I will be bowling this next few years. All I know is my average will drop massively, much harder...

  • @Phantom2502 ...this match was filmed in Nova Scotia /watch?v=7Os9g_4T27M&playnext=1&list=PLAF1260451D03C2B9

  • 3:36 that dad sounded so proud of his son going to "Newbury College: A Two Year College".

  • didn't they have a candlepin bowling alley in Fenway Park?

  • @RRaquello yes, it closed a few years ago, its was where "game on! lower bar is now. lane 17 is on the right feild roof bar

  • i lol at the fact that there are actually commercials. normally theyre gay ads in the beginning b4 the video but these commercials are acceptable

  • I love the quality!

  • so old fashioned and orthodox XD

  • I like the commercials.

  • R.I.P. Don Gillis you are missed deeply by fans

  • love this show love candlepin bowling! miss it since I moved to Calif

  • Hey guys

Odd question... How exactly is candlepins scored?

    Thank you

    Brian~

  • Nobody will ever make Candlepin Bowling as exciting on TV as Donny Gillis did, was awesome with this show.

  • 32 glasses for $6.99?!?!?!?!?!? AMAZING!

  • y play smalle pin this is xetra small??? LOLLLL

  • Amazing awards, amazing video quality! :D

  • oh home vhs recordings

    why are you so terrible?

  • Thumbs up for this video looking old as fuck.

  • Comment removed

  • @JOSHAPPLE101 Thumbs up for 4:56

  • this game looks pretty interesting - especially the part about leaving the dead wood. I'll have to try this out some time.

  • oh jesus, i remember tracking my vcr...

  • whats a perfect game in candlepin?

  • what took channel 5 so long to come with the idea to give a gift certificate to rotmans

to a bowler for winning three weeks in a row because I know alot of bowlers who

did'nt get it who do deserve one

  • im always amazed at the little prize money they get. bowling is one of the most popular sports in the world

  • These guys are throwing so fast the video looks fake. There throws look computer generated

  • where is the candlepin bowling alley in ohio?

  • VHS tapes were still quite good quality :P Not the sound, but the video. I love VHSs

  • Man, you can't get that many glasses for $6.99 anymore.

  • how much would those balls cost? its gotta be under 30 bucks

  • @MattFromBowling No a set of 4 new candlepin balls costs roughly $230 if you want good ones.

  • they dont have a core do they? and why would you need 4 if you only have 3 balls per frame? is it just like dif weights or what?

  • @MattFromBowling They do have a solid core, I've seen one before because a ball literally blew up upon contact with the head pin. As for a set of 4, sometimes the lane is a little slow with balls returning, and 4 balls keeps the pace going faster. The weights are always the same for the 4 balls, either 2lb 5oz, 2lb 6oz, or 2lb 7oz.

  • cool thanks

  • wraio!

  • I like the commercials.

  • actually, it isn't played everywhere. It's only played in Masachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and some parts of Canada. For some weird reason, there is one candlepin bowling alley in Ohio. Must be someone who moved from New England!

I love how someone said they play "normal" bowling. This is normal, LOL!

  • @missbarbic

i have candlepin bowling here in nova scotia, canada

  • It's also played in a couple of areas in Vermont.

  • @Wolfman12395 maryland as well...only place i've ever played it...fun but hard as hell lol

  • @missbarbic This was "normal" bowling to me until I moved to Georgia LOL! Massachusetts native... never played anything but candlepin until I moved down here.

  • @missbarbic "This is normal, LOL! " I dont know about that :) "Normal" means "usual" and 10 pin is what is usually played . I dont think it would be correct to refer to candlepin bowling as normal! In fact its fairly unusual

  • i lived in lynn, mass till i was 5.

  • OMG seriously?

  • I just found out about Candle Pin Bowling. I am assuming it's Canadian because I never heard of it and it looks like it's from the 70's

  • candlepin bowling is a new england sport only

  • @rocky12117 wrong, i live in canada and it's all i play

  • yea i ment to say that its in canada too, i have family members who bowled in worlds in canada

  • @IamDarkStar2012: that is so stupid, candlepin bowling is played all over the place

  • Candlepins is American. It was invented by Justin "Pop" White in Worcester, MA in 1879.

  • Candlepin bowling was developed in 1880 in Worcester, Massachusetts

  • Whats a 500 triple?

  • 500 triple is a bowlers combined scored over three games

  • i dont get the score but like the sport but i do normal bowling in real life

  • scoring is the same was as ten pin bowling except you get three balls and if you get them all down on the third ball then its a 10

  • I watched this when it aired. I might still have a tape of it somewhere! Amazing performance. To me, the thing about Berger is he's not a fireballer, but he's so accurate, with LOTS of action on the ball.

  • i WATCHED THIS EVREY sATURDAY AT NOON TIME.dON GILLIS WAS GREAT.

  • Does anybody know where I can find, or order online a candlepin bowling bumper sticker? With a picture of candlepins on it? I want to put one on my car.

  • uh, you mean a 500 series??

  • paul look's different without a mustache

  • It seems like Dave Richards had a lot of bittersweet memories on here. Being on the losing end of this 500 triple, and also being on the last ever episode of this great show. Memorable moments though.

  • amazing bowling

  • Why do they throw so hard when having 1 pin left?

  • You are supposed to, in this game, throw EVERY ball at the same speed, because if you change anything, it messes you up. You learn how to hit those after awhile, but you never add/subtract speed just because there is a single pin standing. You throw just as hard every ball in candlepin.

  • this looks WAY harder then bowling, and looks fun, is there a site where i can find places to play in the US? Anywhere near new jersey?

  • Closest you would get to New Jersey would be Springfield MA, but thats still a few hours away.

  • what is the max score in one game??

  • 300. Apparently it has never been accomplished.

  • Lanes N Games in Alewife on RT2 had the world record for candlepin somewhere posted ... i think it was somewhere in the 260s

  • The all-time record is 245

  • i dont get it. whats a 500 triple?

  • a "Triple" is the score you end up with after three strings of bowling. (Since leagues always play 3 strings in a night)

A 500 Triple is... well... getting a combined score of 500. Which is pretty unbelievable. The average local league bowler averages 290-320 for a Triple. I've only done over 300 a few times... so it's pretty incredible to me.

  • Is this the same as saying I got a 700 series in ten pin bowling?

    It's just a 500 series?

  • Exactly. A 500 in Candlepin is as impressive as a 700 in Ten Pin.. maybe even more. I don't quite know for sure. But it's at least equal.

  • Actually, 400 series in Candlepin is like a 700 series in ten pin. a 500 in Candlepin is more like an 830+ series in Ten Pin. It's a very, and I mean VERY rare occurrence.

  • Richards works at MVP Sports! Ahhh good old early 90's Massachusetts.

8:30 Paul Berger is working with wood behind the head pin.... hahah candlepin commentary is full of classic unintentional comedy.

  • 5 pin 10 pin candle stick, duck pin and i believe belgian pin. or something, lol

  • Ooh, 32 glasses for £4.85.

  • lmao

  • Wolfman, I have to agree with you. Being a candlepin bowler myself (from New Brunswick) this is my favorite video thus far. I like how Paul bowls, quite simply. Although I didn't even know that there was a candlepin bowling show, I'm mildly disappointed that it didn't exist past 1996.

In NB and Nova Scotia, there's a tournament to determine provincial and national champions. Back when I was 10, I actually won the Nationals.

Unfortunately, I do not bowl on a league, but instead I go weekly.

  • Shame when Don Gillis called it quits, the candlepin shows on TV went away

  • Don Gillis didn't call it quits, Channel 5 made the decision to pull the show. I am glad there are still shows on TV like the Candlepin Challenge, but we need another Channel 5 type show.

  • Actually, the Candlepin Challenge is in serious jeopardy of not coming back next season. It really sucks X_X

  • whats a 500 triple :D

  • combined 3 games equals 500.

  • theirs duck pin ten pin candle stick what else!!!

  • I know, just founded out in 2 hours that there are 4 different (probably even more) kinds of bowling... and all of those 16 years of life-experience with just the good ol' 10-pin bowl :7

  • I tried this once the night before a (10 pin) bowling tournament I traveled to New England for. Had some fun, was able to crank the little thing. One of the guys I was with was a natural at it & kicked our asses.

The next morning practicing/warming up for the tournament my first 3 or 4 shots were all dumped in the gutter. It took me a while to get back into swing of a 16lb ball.

  • I feel that even though things are smaller, they still shouldn't be missing single pins as frequently as they do, especially for being pros...

  • agreed

  • Ahhh I love the early 90s.

  • how do u put spin on that???

  • Does this all still exsist today? I mean, i see that this is an ally made just for this candlestick bowling, so is it still around? I never hear about it

  • Yep, it's a New England thing. In fact, you'll find far more Candlepin alleys around here than 10 pin. Growing up in Mass., I always assumed this was the only bowling. And, at least in my opinion, it's the better of the two.

  • Where's the rest of the video?

  • I have never played candlepin but is it really that hard? I assume these guys are pro's? Doesnt seem as hard as they make it look

  • yes actually it is hard to do, the strike spot in this game is much smaller that that of ten-pin or duckpin

  • Ah, good ol' early 90's commercials

  • does any technology go into the equipment, such as in Tenpin\

  • I don't think so. It's such a small ball, and they just whip it down the lane anyways.

Doesn't make any sense, though, that they wipe off their ball before shots. Like, what's the point? Just some extra grip on the ball.

  • what is a "pro" average in candelstick

  • a "pro" candelstick maker can average thousands of candles each day.

  • Music is making me nightmares

  • wouldn't it be "the music is GIVING you nightmares? I mean honestly what kid of 12 year old says the music is making me nightmares

  • a 17 year old whos mother language is not english.

But Im the best english speaker in my class

  • is the rest of your class retarded then ? :P

    <3

  • So how good is your knowledge of a foreign language?

  • kinda good, actually

just in case: i aint english either

  • How heavy are the balls???

  • about as heavy as your nutsack

  • LOL

  • I had never heard of this game before until a few weeks ago when my aunt came all the way down from Maine, and she told us that she was captain of a candlepin bowling team....being a fan of bowling, I had to check it out.....it's very interesting.

  • how the hell does the score work

  • you get three balls. So if you strike, the next two balls are added to that frame. If you get all 10 down on the first two balls, you get 10 plus the next ball, and if it takes all three rolls to knock down ten pins you get 10 points for that frame.

  • I never even heard of Candlepin Bowling until a few weeks ago

  • me 2

  • You Massachusetts people ah wicked we-id with this candlepin bowling stuff.

  • omg the intro is so cheesy

  • apparently the highest score ever in an officially sanctioned candlepin game was 245, not even close to a perfect game.

  • That 245 was by Ralph Semb.

He is also the head Shriner.

Very nice person, go bowl candlepin at French King bowling alley in Erving MA, thats where he resides and works, thats where I go often.

I got an average of around 100 lol

  • the first time I ever candlepin bowled I got an 85

  • really not bad for a first time

  • Don't ask me how I know this, but the theme song here was also the theme to Wheel of Fortune... in Belgium. (Search YT for "Rad van Fortuin", you'll find it.)

  • is 127 considered a good average? cause i know its not in tenpin bowling but this looks a lot different...

  • well i guessin if hes a pro, its prbbly not 2 bad

  • lol

  • 127 in Candlepin is like 220-230 in tenpin. The top candlepin pros have averages from 125 to about 134.

  • ohh ok. thanks

  • 127 would probably be equal to a 135 average now. the scoring has increased since 1992.

  • hey wolfman wats your average for candleping bowling

  • thx 4 the reply

  • woooooo hooooooooo, awesome big trophies

  • hey wolfman12395 did u ever get 2 meet him or be on this show?

  • I never met Don Gillis though I really wish I did. And I was WAY too young to ever compete on Channel 5. I was actually only 2 years old when this show aired. But my dad said I was so excited when I watched this that he would tape the shows every so often for me, and I'm glad he did!

I have been on TV though, I was on last year for the CN8 Candlepin Challenge and I won and was the champ for a week :)

  • R.I.P don gillis he died this year

  • What is candlepin bowling

  • You get three shots, and deadwood is left in play. Not alot of curve is put on the ball, and to be good at this game, you'd need to know how to play deadwood and have great accuracy. Lanes are not oiled like tenpin.

  • not oiled LIKE ten pin, but they are oiled

  • i love this.

  • Tracking [=======|========]

  • Looks like alot of fun, I wish we had that here.

  • Oh shit this video just pulled me backwards in time 15 years

  • don't you love VHS?

  • Seems like it requires more aiming than the regular version. It's prolly like it is with pool and snooker.

  • Wow I can't believe this is a sport and it has been around so long. I just barely heard about it today and I think it is very weird. I live in California which may be why but I like bowling and I don't see why this sport exists if bowling does, sorry if that offends anyone. I just find this kinda weird.

  • Yeah, but also, alot of candlepin bowling alleys are gone too. I live in Massachusetts, and there used to be 4 or 5 alleys in my city, and now down to two. I live in Lynn. It sucks. The two taping places for this show before the Fairway are closed, Boylston Bowladrome, and Sammy White's Brighton Bowl.

  • I am from Massachusetts and these candlepin bowling alleys are everyhere, I can not find too many 10 Pin places near me and I am not a candlepin fan!

  • welcome New England, Candlepin is the dominant form of bowling, there aren't too many 10 pin bowling centers in the area as far as I know. (and it's much more fun IMO)

  • "do these alleys even exist anymore"...yea, there is one thats about a 10 minute drive from my house, they are mostly in new england...notice how all of the sponsors and players in this game are from massachusetts

  • candlepin telecast- HAHAHA!!

just those two words together sound incredibly hilarious

  • Even out here in WI. The CN8 show is still on, and from what i understand gets great ratings. The channel 5 shows problem wasn't ratings, but rather ABC didn't want too much local programming, plus advertisers didn't like the demographic that this show reached. :(

  • haha i love this game.

  • Do these alleys even exist anymore?

  • Fairway Sports World most certainly still exists, and it looks almost exactly the same today as it did back then. Helen Sellew the owner of the facility is a real student of the game and knows all the history behind it, and I believe is in the hall of fame for contributions to the game.

  • where is it?

  • Its in Natick Mass right on route 9 Westbound, just east of the route 27 intersection. It's hard to miss the Fairway Bowling sign.
