A few weeks later, on New Years Day, someone flew a hang glider over the Rose Bowl during the game. We thought it might have been a prankster from Cal Tech, whose students occasionally perpetrate pranks during the Rose Bowl Game, but the pilot turned out to be a professional skydiver.
I was cheering on the Trojans behind the west end zone and got a good view of both the blocked field goal and the kite landing. USC won 24-14, but the game was much closer than the score indicated.
what amazes me about this is. how did he get high enough to enter the stadium? was this the end of a long cross country, if so perhaps he miss understood that he should reach goal. winching seems unlikley unless there were a river nearby i know boats used to tow them way back. or could this be evidence of a very early aerotow.
To answer your questions, I took off from Strawberry Canyon, at the top of the ridge a mile away, about 1000 ft elevation above the stadium, flew directly above the game several hundred feet high then turned South for an approach, made a 180 and flew between two flagpoles at the South rim and descended over the stands to burn off height then slowed down just above ground effect along the diagonal - longest dimension - of the field...sorry but had to touch down before the end zone to safely stop
i was reading my earlier statement thinking what a dumb arse then i noticed it was me!!! i had only just started HG then now i have full P rating funnt looking back
I remember this, I thought you quit because the cops cracked your knees..ha Ha... I worked for seagull at the time and we were wondering which of us test flew that glider.
Nice landing too! Course if you had planted it in the middle of the field the SC team would have made you pay!!!
That took more guts and skill than the balloon dude tied to a lawn chair

Do you have a full copy of this game? I'd love to see Darnell Chapman's return that blocked field goal for a Cal touchdown in the 2nd quarter again.

...hmm...with a slightly higher final
approach and precision targeting, maybe
he could have flown between the uprights - the goal posts, that is,
scoring an easy 3 points. Hopefully
the netting behind the post would 'bag'
him before hitting spectators.

Such was the Knievel era....we need more of that spirit today. Any chance that Tom has inspired anyone for a repeat performance here soon?
Anybody?
Looks like I'll have to do it myself.....

Ha Ha Ha!!! That was you! I didn't even look at your obvious user name when I commented on the other video. LOL!
Nice work Tom! That's better than when I landed my Soarmaster powered Moyes Mega II in my friend's backyard one day at dusk.
Cheers, Jonathan
I hope you're still flying. I just resumed after a 26-year break.
