aded to this list would be Hairspray (You can't stop the beat, Good morning Baltimore and I know where i've been), Sweeney Todd (Epiphany, WOrst pies in london and No place like London) and Dreamgirls (And i am telling you, One Night Only and It's all over).
Oklahoma! was fine, but brutal in some parts. The accents IMO got irritating and the dream sequence was moronic. I agree with keeping it off the list. Glad to see Funny Girl get recognized as Barbara Streisand's best, and especially pleased that Singin' In the Rain is named best movie musical of all time. No movie musical ever got the point of musicals better.
In my opinion it's a good list. I quite agree with the top three. But , from my point of view "Chicago" it's so overrated!!! I would have chosen instead "Gigi","State Fair(1945)","Camelot","My sister Eieen","Yentl""The fidle on the roof","Golddiggers 1933","Anchors aweigh" ,"High Society"and many more. I love to see on the list: "Top hat" ,"The band wagon" ,"Meet me in St. Louis","My Fair lady","An american in paris","Guys and dolls","Beauty and the Beast"and "Moulin Rouge
i don't agree with much here...where is gentlemen prefer blondes??? no way grease or chicago is better than top hat. no broadway melody of 1940, must be 20-30 yr olds making this list. someone needs to go and watch more movies.
"Beauty and the Beast" doesn't belong here. It's animated, and to me musicals are mostly about watching live performers sing and dance. I would replace it with "Oklahoma!", which I'm surprised did not make the list.
awesome list considering i havent seen about half of these movies!!! the ones i have seen were on the very top, and i LOVED how beauty and the beast made it on. wonderfully done video btw :)
I've seen 15 of them and I'm 18. I love Seven Brides for Seven Brothers! I'm thrilled that it made it. I'm also glad that an Astaire and Rogers movie made it on the list because they were an incredible team! I'm a big Gene Kelly fan, but I didn't really like An American in Paris (apparently that's just me). The same goes for The Band Wagon. I thought Astaire's movies with Ginger Rogers were better. They're all great movies though. I guess I'll have to watch the other 10 that I haven't seen.
Why in the world is the theme song to "Gone With the Wind" used for the music in presenting the list of musicals - I understand that you needed some background music - but it was so distracting - I kept on hoping they had made GWTW into a musical and I had missed it .LOL
@racelehman Already an other user long ago, had stated its doubts about the choice of theme music. The theme music by Gone with the wind, is used during the presentation of these films in the evening gala. I wanted to repeat the same music.
@73efarta Fiddeer On the Roof is one of the 180 nominated films. But it is not entered in the ranking of the 25 greatest movie musicals. Remember that this is a ranking made in 2006. Maybe it will soon be another.
when i saw Sound of Music at 4 I thought Wizard of Oz will be number 1 i wonder what 2 and 3 would be. Then when wizard of oz was 3 I though what the hell could beat that, then when I saw West Side Story I thought of-course makes sense, but what could be number? Then when I saw 'Singin' in the Rain' I thought it was very fitting, good list, 'cept for Beauty and the Beast.
I personaly think that Beauty and the Beast shouldn't be in this count down, like Fiddler on the Roof is TEN times BETTER, or like the Phantom of the Opera, but other than that very good List:D
@Indeed999 Fiddeler On the Roof is one of the 180 nominated films. But it is not entered in the ranking of the 25 greatest movie musical. Remember that this is a ranking made in 2006. Maybe it will soon be another.
I was never fond of Grease, but understand its inclusion. My primary problem with Guys and Dolls was casting Brando who could not sing in the lead role whereas Sinatra was in a secondary role. But,I guess, that,at the time,Brando was hotter than Frank. I wish they had found a place for Swingtime, which is by far my favorite Astaire film, but am happy at the inclusion of the Bandwagon & Top Hat. I loved Meet Me In St. Louis & Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy. There are many great films on that list.
Agree with the top 24.......! I know people love 'Singin' in the Rain' and I love it, too, just don't think it is the greatest. One thing I did not quite understand was the background music....from 'Gone With The Wind'! Where did that fit in to all this, except that it is one of our greatest films? The combo of GWTW, Dixie, and other patriotic music was a bit odd, for me. Just my opinion. Just to mention, never realized how much the music from GWTW took its tone from Debussy's 'Claire de Lune'!
@TheBigValley Thank you. Yes, I wrote in my message that I was aware that it was from GWTW, but was unclear why they were playing music from that film, for a clip of best musicals, of which there is an abundance of music to choose from. That was all. Peace!
@TheBigValley Well, perhaps the quintet from 'West Side Story' since it is a musical and on the list ot the Overture to 'CArousel', notr on list, but a musical.....'Somewhere' also from WSS......which is so beautiful......list could go on, just thought it odd that music from a non musical was chosen. GWTW is known, of course, but if I recall, Scarlett and Rhett, with Aunt Pitty and Melanie and Ashley, don't all break out into song. That is all. Have a nice day.
Good list! I was hoping Swing Time, Gigi, Holiday Inn, Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Bye Bye Birdie, Fiddler on the Roof, The Muppet Movie, A Night at the Opera, The Lion King, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Cinderella, and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory would be on the list, they are important musicals as well.
It's interesting if you look at the list statistically: Gene Kelly and Judy Garland are the most represented actors on the list with 3 films each (and all of Garland's are in the top 10); Fred Astaire and Julie Andrews have 2 each, and after them, every other actor appears only once; of the studios represented, MGM claims the most with 8 or 1/3rd of the list; and only 2 of the 25 were released during this millennium. Add it all up and extrapolate what you will about talent and quality :)
Gran video ^^ Tutti Insieme Appassionatamente l'ho visto talmente tante volte da piccolo che penso di ricordarlo a memoria.. e Mary Poppins pure.. Julie Andrews <3 Bel lavoro capo! :)
I like the widescreen and the video quality is excellent. I don't know how to make my videos clear and wide like that. I think i have to learn a new video program or something.
Wow!!!! You made a beautiful tribute! I love the choice of music, too! Didn't think of Tara's Theme fitting so beautifully to the movements of Fred, Ginger, Cyd Charisse and all the others! I am totally happy with the "Top 3" spots, but from then on, I would have chosen differently . But, lists are lists, personal taste is personal taste. Thank you so much for sharing this great video with me and all of us, 5 ***** and more if I could for all the work that seemed to have gone into creating it!
What can I say about the Afi choice? It's clear that there are popular musicals and milestones. A musical is a dream, a fairy tale. But there is art and Art, music and Music, dancers and Dancers, singers and Singers! So I keep my opinions. Only some of them are in my personal list. Lists are made also to create divisions and discussions. Anyway, great job and wonderful music! Thanks, Big Valley!
Love is singing in the rain! The umbrella scene is full of poetry. When you love, rain or shine give you the same happiness.
But Fred Astaire! A wizard: his movement so elegant, charming, enchanting. He flies in the air and his body becomes a symphony. Ginger, Cyd, it doesn't matter! The rustle of their dress, the wonderful legs, the seducing gestures,... but Fred can dance with a stick, or in the ceiling. He has not only strenght, class like Gene, but armony.
Help! But all will be dead people ...! There are films half a century ago. A nice video you will certainly found it extremely difficult ... and search ... but all I see films restored ... beautiful film archive your channel ... where you can find all the generations apart from my ehehhehe .... but you learn ... wow and thanks!

"Funny Girl" should have been much higher on the list. Streisand won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Fanny Brice.
"My Fair Lady" should have been in the top five, for sure.
"Hello Dolly" isn't even mentioned. It should have at least made the top ten just for the fabulous, show stopping title song.
"Gigi" won the Oscar for Best Picture and it's not even on here!
