So he doesn't jump on top of Biggoron's sword if you try to stab him. That is the big difference. There's no other easy to to do it besides Din's Fire. He even blocks the megaton hammer every time in my game. I would slash away at him and take some damage of my own, but I am trying to beat this game with 3 hearts and no addons (i.e. only 1 bottle and 1/2 mana bar).

you know theres a trick to fighting dark link the reason why he actauly knows ur moves becaus of ur reflection in the water when u go on land u can sit there tap B and he wouldint do anything but get hurt

You have no reflection in the water., If you look closely you'll notice before Link steps on the island he has one, but once he steps off, it's gone, as it's turned into Dark link.

Thats what I used to do but then he started defending and the hammer didn't work on him. So now before I go to the Water Temple I get green potion and use dins fire. It works pretty well.

The best thing to do to defeat him is NOT to target him and do random attacks. Those will catch him off guard.

Oh man! I never knew this! I never tried the Giant's Knife on him! Oh man I remember in 1998 I wrote off that sword as a novelty. Didn't think it would be that useful. I could never beat Dark Link with the regular tools of the trade except that cheapo way using the fire magic (I forget what's called. Din's fire?)

Wow dude, the Giant's knife is no novelty, i think it causes 1/2 to 1 heart more of damage per hit (don't remember which). Its large too so you have an advantage when in close combat, that is if you know how to use it well. Best used in boss battles anyways because the shield doesn't do anything during boss battles.
